The leaderboards tell me that this competitive, gamified setup can motivate contributors susceptible to ego appeals. They may even seek bragging rights on the site precisely because they don't have similar status outside of it.

@nprofile…4hp5 You're quite right. A thick skin might be useful, but ideally not a prerequisite to participation.
I remember the validating feelings of seeing others upvote my work. But the flipside was strangers voting to delete my questions for private reasons, or trying to enforce norms I hadn't agreed to.
For your proposed reinvention, the concept that every question has only a single answer does seem ripe for reconsideration.

I was once a high-ranking History.SE user who bailed after some culture clashes there. Even Reviewer #2 is usually kinder.

Hello. I am performing some deeds for my mother-in-law. We found this “126” film and, before I try to get it developed, is it actually unused? In the window instead of a frame number I see parts of right-facing arrows, and the left side of the cartridge is heavier, making me think no film has been taken up on the larger-diameter spool to the right. I hope someone who has seen one of these before could confirm or deny for us. Thank you!

I was entertained today to run into Russia's Resolution No. 111 of 1998/2005, which prohibits all #radio transmitters past 9kHz, plus devices for covert ends: the receipt and recording of acoustic information, visual observation and documentation, wiretapping of telephone conversations, interception & recording of information from technical communication channels, control over the movement of vehicles & other objects, inspection of premises, vehicles & other objects.
