anyhoo, if you've been wondering, EPIX seems to have shat the bed again and IPv4 routing does not work, thusly most of my services are unavailable.
IPv6 works, at least from some places. Sorry about that!

it is so surreal to still have this instance up when EPIX fucks up their bgp

every time you use GenAI...
- "just for a small project",
- "just to test it out",
- "using local models, so it's okay",
- "because everyone else is doing it",
- "because I had to, okay?",
... every time, you're normalizing this being used for more and more CRAP which is downright abusive. for every person who's "aware of the risks", there's 1000 devs who are clicking the slot machine mindlessly, because they don't know better, or they don't care for better. for every person who "only does this in a limited fashion", there are thousands who won't mind using it for everything, making all of our collective software ecosystem worse as a result, not to mention poisoning the web, and making lives of all sysadmins globally ABSOLUTE HELL.
please, don't.

2026-10-04 21:39:57 UTC

have you ever wondered how it feels to have a stranger steal your car, use its various parts to make an imperfect replica, then look you in the eye and say "have you tried this one? it's good"
too abstract? thanks to the power of capitalism and generative AI, you can now experience this feeling firsthand, by simply having someone steal and shoddily rewrite your whole codebase in C++ using fancy autocomplete!

i'd expect spi flash to be build on a much larger process than modern eMMC/parallel flash, so it's probably not the greatest thing to compare to :p
(but i'm on your side wrt retention, I've resoldered a lot of chips and never had a problem with this)
edit: i guess you didn't specify SPI, so it might be any flash. if so, disregard my point

seconding that. making things just how we want them is a part of the appeal of retrocomputing, at least for me. meanwhile this is the definition of "don't care, just do whatever", which I find to be a reprehensible way of thinking, in direct opposition to the curiosity which makes all of those weird platforms so cool and interesting

okay now that i look at it. i think i've had some similar behavior once with a bad physical nvme connection (i.e. i mounted the fucker with tape and the tape gave up) - it's a bit far-fetched, but I'm assuming you've tried reseating it before?

2026-07-04 11:46:41 UTC

so i look into *why* my logs are so enormous. i shouldn't have left them as verbose for 1.5 months but they also shouldn't have grown to EIGHT GIGABYTES. and most of my recent log lines are something like
```
Jul 04 13:36:22 msg="Limit of simultaneous TCP connections reached - raise max-tcp-connections" prio="Warning"
```
this, but 15 times a second... Which usually means that we're under attack. but it's a very lousy attack, i can't even see it on the graph, so they're only really causing some disruption to TCP connections, not UDP. and most of DNS is UDP, that's why I'm only noticing right now.
anyways. `ss -tulnap | grep 53` shows a lot of connections with addresses that begin with `2a03:2880`. `| wc -l` says 273, from maybe 5-6 different hosts. and, my dear comrades, can you guess who owns `2a03:2880::/32`?
```
that's right! facebook! and after a preliminary check, we've seen this same exact thing on at least one other #SERVFAIL nameserver
in "completely unrelated news": i "slipped" in my kitchen and executed `ip6tables -I INPUT -s 2a03:2880::/32 -j DROP` as root on sakamoto i'm so sorry (not sorry). and through the power of ip6tables... suddenly my TCP limits aren't reached anymore. CURIOUS
