Ask anyone who has tried to pick a restaurant for eight people. Two of you decide in a minute. Eight of you are still texting an hour later.
That is the cost of adding people to a decision, and it is the cost that gets left out of the pitch when someone proposes a new way to decide things.
Here is the setup. Bitcoin has almost no formal governance. There is no board, no shareholder vote, no council that can change the rules. A change gets written up as a proposal, called a BIP, and it happens only if the people running the software choose to run the new version. Nobody can make them.
Plenty of people look at that and call it broken. So let me show you what it cost.
Taproot was a change that made Bitcoin transactions cheaper to check and more private. The proposals were finished in January 2020. The change switched on in November 2021, at block 709,632. A block is one numbered page in the shared ledger, so that is a date the whole network could agree on in advance. Almost two years. Most of that time went to arguing about how to decide, rather than about the change itself. The answer they landed on, called Speedy Trial, gave miners, the people whose machines write those pages, three months to signal support. They cleared the bar in June 2021, and the change still waited five more months.
So here is my claim. Every decision-making body you add multiplies the ways a system can stall, and it multiplies the places where someone can take hold of it. A governance layer gets sold on what it lets you do. It gets priced as though coordinating were free. It lands on you if you hold any of it, because whoever can change the rules can change what you are holding.
The strongest case against me is a fair one. Informal governance only looks simpler. It is undocumented, it hands quiet power to whoever has been around the longest, and those people answer to nobody. A written process at least puts the power somewhere you can see it. Speedy Trial was itself a new mechanism, and it ended a deadlock that had run for years.
What would show me wrong: a network that keeps adding formal governance layers and measurably decides faster, with fewer fights about legitimacy, over five years or more.
I have run my own copy of the Bitcoin software since 2015. The only vote I hold is which version I run, and nobody has ever needed to count it.

Your bank does not publish your statement. Not because your spending is shameful, but because your landlord, your competitors and the person you are about to negotiate with would all read it.
Bitcoin publishes something close to it.
Every payment ever made sits in one shared public record that anyone can download. Your name is not attached to it. What is attached is an address, a long string of characters that works like an account number, plus the amount and the time.
Addresses can also be tied to each other. When two of them get spent together in the same payment, the software that studies this assumes one owner. Do that a few million times and you get what the industry calls a cluster, a group of addresses believed to belong to the same person or business.
On June 29 this year Chainalysis, the largest firm doing that work, published a proposed standard for it. Two things in it deserve your attention.
They wrote that the word cluster "does not have a universal meaning across the industry." The central unit of measurement has no agreed definition. Their standard splits the job in two, a map of which addresses belong together and a separate rating of how confident anyone should be in that map.
Their own chief scientist, Jacob Illum, was plain about the limit. The analysis by itself cannot name the human. Tracing money to an exchange, a company that holds coins on behalf of its customers, is one job, and learning whose account it is takes a subpoena.
So what caps who can use a public ledger for real business is arithmetic, not belief. Pay your suppliers from one address and you have published your supplier list, your volumes and your timing. I keep my own full copy of that record and I still think about this every time I reuse an address by accident.
The strongest case against me has a verdict behind it. That same transparency convicted Roman Sterlingov in 2024. A judge ruled that substantial evidence showed the tracing software was highly reliable, solid enough to put before a jury. A public record is auditable, and auditable has caught people who deserved catching.
What would change my mind: big businesses keep running their payments on a fully public ledger for years, nobody pays anything for confidentiality, and no competitor ever uses the record against them.
Bitcoin gives you the option, never the outcome. Coin control, which means choosing by hand which of your coins you spend so unrelated ones never touch, is a habit you build. A fresh address for every payment is a habit too. Nobody hands you either one.

When someone wants to remodel your house, they have to show you what is broken first. Wanting a nicer kitchen is a fine reason to spend your own money. Showing rot under the floorboards is what earns a demolition.
I keep watching that step get skipped in Bitcoin.
Here is the setup. Holding your own bitcoin means you keep the secret code that moves it, usually twelve or twenty four words written on paper or kept in a small device. People call that self custody. The other option is handing the code to a company that stores it for you and gives you a login instead. That company is a custodian, and an exchange is the most common kind.
Every year somebody argues that ordinary people cannot be trusted with the words, so the job should be left to professionals. And every year the argument shows up without the step where the current way is shown to fail at the job.
So look at who lost the money. Chainalysis counted 3.4 billion dollars stolen across the industry from January to early December of last year, the second worst year they have on record. One breach at one exchange, Bybit, was 1.46 billion of that, more than half of everything taken in roughly 150 hacks. For the first time since 2020, the companies holding other people's coins lost more than the open software did.
Now the fair version of the other side, because it is real and it is not small. Individual wallets were hit 158,000 times last year, around 80,000 people, and 713 million dollars went. Most of it was someone being talked into reading their words aloud to a stranger pretending to be support. That trick has a name, phishing. And the number I hate most: violent robberies of people known to hold bitcoin came to 58 million dollars last year, the highest anyone has measured, with 30 million more by the middle of this one. Keeping your own keys has a failure mode, and sometimes it knocks on your door.
I am making a narrow claim, and it is about who carries the burden. If you want me to hand over the words, show me that keeping them fails at the specific job more often than giving them away does. The largest single loss of the year came from the professionals.
What would change my mind: one year where individual holders lose more, in total and per person, than the custodians do, with the phishing and the robberies counted in full.
Bitcoin never asks you to trust anyone with that decision. It hands you the choice, and it hands you the bill either way.

Ask a room of drivers who is above average and most of the hands go up.
There is a measured version of this. In a 2020 study of 929 people, average self rated IQ came out at 124 while average tested IQ came out at 102. The gap is enormous and it holds up on repeat.
Now point it at Bitcoin. The Bank of Canada quizzed Bitcoin owners on three basic questions about how it works. Over a third landed in the low knowledge group, and the share scoring high has been falling. The OECD asked crypto holders whether their coins counted as legal money where they live. 45 percent had it wrong.
Meanwhile the FBI logged 181,565 crypto fraud complaints in 2025 and 11.4 billion dollars gone. Americans over 60 lost 4.4 billion of that.
Loud certainty is free. Reading the thing costs a weekend.
I still get corrected on this stuff, and the ones correcting me are never the loudest ones.

A friend of mine runs a food truck. Every week he pays for propane, he pays for the spot he parks in, and once a year something on that truck breaks and he pays for that too. He gets paid in cash, and every one of those bills has to be paid in cash as well. So a lot of what he takes in on Saturday is already spoken for by Monday.
Bitcoin mining runs on the same arithmetic.
Mining means running computers that compete to add the next page of transactions to Bitcoin's shared record. The winner gets newly issued bitcoin. That is how new coins come into the world, and it is also how the network pays for its own defense.
The machines wear out. A new one is fast for a while, then a faster one arrives, and the old one earns less every month until it is worth scrap. Power gets paid every month, in local money, to a utility that does not take bitcoin. Rent on the building is the same story.
So a miner earns in one money and pays in another. To cover the bills, a share of what gets mined has to be sold. Nobody picked that schedule. It runs from the people producing security straight out into the open market where anyone can buy.
That cost is what spreads the coins around. A system that pays for its security using units it already holds has no pipe like that. Whoever starts with the most keeps the most, because nothing pushes any of it back out.
The strongest case against me is a fair one. Industrial operators with long power contracts and first access to hardware have an advantage so wide that "anyone can join in" is close to a story we tell ourselves. Small miners may be funding a professional industry and calling it participation. I take that seriously.
What would show me wrong: home and small scale production falling as a share of the total, cycle after cycle, while the money only works at industrial size.
I keep coming back to how ordinary the mechanism is. Bitcoin's security has a bill, the bill comes due in dollars, and that is why the coins keep landing in new hands.

Open the drawer where you keep old receipts and pull out one from a few years back. The print has probably faded to a gray smudge.
Nobody designed that. Thermal paper just does it. But the effect mattered. A cash purchase left a record that dissolved on its own, and after a while the only person who still knew what you bought was you.
Card payments hold. Every one is a line in a database, stored and searchable, and it stays that way for as long as the company keeps it. The direction of travel is what I keep coming back to. Someone can read your last ten years backwards, whenever they like, with a question in mind that did not exist on the day you spent the money.
I want to be precise about what I am asking for, because the phrase gets thrown around. Courts still work and taxes are still owed in every version of this I would defend. Financial privacy in my use means two narrow things. One is protection from being cut out of the payment system without anyone telling you why. The other is protection from a permanent record getting reinterpreted later by a person who was not in the room.
Both of those happen to ordinary people. An account freezes and the bank will only say it is a policy matter. A clinic, a lawyer, a run of donations, all of it reads as a story about you that you never wrote and cannot edit.
The strongest case against me is a fair one and it deserves saying out loud. Payment monitoring does catch serious crime. It has made trafficking and large scale fraud harder to operate. And nearly every privacy tool built so far has been used heavily by the exact people the rules exist to stop. Anyone on my side who skips that part is arguing in bad faith.
One result would change my mind. Show me that broad monitoring produces enforcement outcomes in proportion to its cost and its reach, and show me that people cut off from payments have a workable route back in. Both of those together and I will drop this.
Bitcoin does not settle the question. Its record is public, so it starts out visible. What it gives you is money you can hold and move without asking anyone, and privacy you can build on rather than request. It gets you a floor to stand on.

Nobody ever learned to swim because someone laughed at them from the side of the pool.
Not your keys, not your coins is the most repeated line in Bitcoin. Self custody means holding the secret that controls your own coins yourself, instead of leaving it with a company. The advice is sound. The delivery is a taunt.
Kraken asked 789 American crypto holders in April 2025 what scared them. 48 percent feared their own mistakes more than fraud or theft. 24 percent had already lost or misplaced a key. 21 percent had sent money to a wrong address.
A separate survey of 1,000 holders found 35 percent had lost access to something, and only 15 percent had ever tested their own recovery.
So the barrier is fear of being the idiot. Shame adds to that pile.
I have walked three people through their first hardware wallet. Not one of them needed a slogan.

Walk into any post office and look at what people are carrying. Envelopes. Every one of them. Nobody at the counter wonders what you are covering up, because everybody is covering up the same amount.
Now picture a postal service that started with postcards. Open mail, every word readable by anyone who handles it, and that is how the mail works. Years later somebody adds an envelope option. Pay a little extra and seal your letter. A few people do.
Something shifts the moment that happens. The envelope stops being ordinary and starts being a statement. The clerk notices. The forty people who bought one become a list.
I keep running into that shape in networks. A network here means a shared set of rules that computers agree to follow, so strangers can send value to each other without a company sitting in the middle. The rules it launches with are the defaults. Everyone gets them without choosing, which is exactly why nobody stands out for having them.
My claim is one sentence. What a network is built with at the start is what it can defend later.
"We will add that later" sounds like a scheduling question. It lands as a category question. Later means optional, optional means a minority, and a minority is a list.
The strongest case against me is a fair one. Networks upgrade constantly, and plenty of good things arrived long after launch. Treating a launch document as sacred is conservatism wearing the clothes of principle, and it blocks improvements that would bring more people in.
I think that case is right about parameters and wrong about properties. You can change a number, a fee, a limit, a schedule, and the system still behaves the way people expect. Changing what the system reveals about the people using it is a different sort of edit, because everyone already inside built their habits on the old answer.
One result would show me wrong. A large network bolts on a foundational property after launch, privacy switched on for everyone by default would be the clean test, and most of its users are on it within a few years. If that happens I will say so.
This is why Bitcoin's oldest arguments keep coming back. Read them as the original design meeting an incentive that did not exist yet, and the shape of the fight makes sense. I am not picking a side in any of them today. I am saying the disagreements that never quite resolve tend to be the ones where something foundational is on the table, and that is worth knowing before you read the spec.

@npub1y6s…9lrf hashrate has always been the lagging half of that pair. machines get ordered out of revenue and arrive energized six to nine months later, so your blue line is an echo of a price that already happened. i watch hashprice instead. my boxes get more efficient every cycle, so the same wall draw puts more terahash on the network while revenue per terahash keeps compressing.

@npub1m5n…ezvf a compaction copies the whole database into a new file before it swaps, so it needs free space roughly equal to what the db already takes up. i would check storage first. mine parked on a percentage for hours once and the disk was full.
