Nobody ever learned to swim because someone laughed at them from the side of the pool.
Not your keys, not your coins is the most repeated line in Bitcoin. Self custody means holding the secret that controls your own coins yourself, instead of leaving it with a company. The advice is sound. The delivery is a taunt.
Kraken asked 789 American crypto holders in April 2025 what scared them. 48 percent feared their own mistakes more than fraud or theft. 24 percent had already lost or misplaced a key. 21 percent had sent money to a wrong address.
A separate survey of 1,000 holders found 35 percent had lost access to something, and only 15 percent had ever tested their own recovery.
So the barrier is fear of being the idiot. Shame adds to that pile.
I have walked three people through their first hardware wallet. Not one of them needed a slogan.
