I have a Garmin hand held gps that I take hiking and backpacking. I got it because it has a satellite messaging feature that works when there's no cell service. It's been okay so far. The screen on it is terrible (8 bit) but the trade off is the battery life is fantastic (will last a week or more if you don't open it up too often). Biggest con: the UX is clunky and hard to figure out. Biggest pro: it syncs with an iPhone app that makes it a lot more useful.
