Part 7. Those cirrus clouds are a sure sign of fall in this part of the world. This will all be under ten or more feet of snow by December--unless the Super El Niño interrupts it. Word is that we're in for another low-snow winter. Photo 2: that's Mt. Rainier in the background. 7/7

Part 6. Naches Peak Loop is a great short hike (3 miles/5k) that's great for kids and for when you want to take out-of-town visitors to see The Mountain but don't want to pay the park entry fees (it's in the National Park but isn't a fee area). It's also one of the few places in the Cascades where you can drive right up to alpine meadow elevations. 6/7

Part 5. I timed my return so that I'd hit Chinook Pass and the famous Naches Peak Loop trail, at the golden hour. It sits right at the crest of the Cascades and right at the tree line, and It's at its peak fall color now. That red foliage is all wild blueberry bushes. 5/7

Part 3. Last time I visited Tieton WA, the artist colony scene was just getting going , and this building was an empty grocery store turned art gallery, and I was in the group show on exhibit. (Don't ask me what I showed, I don't even recall). Now it's some kind of trendy retail. Gentrification happens here too I guess. 3/7

Part 2. I followed Highway 410, which will be closed for the winter in a few weeks, right on over the Cascades to the tiny town of Tieton, which has been settled by a number of well known contemporary artists, kind of like Marfa, Texas (to which it likes to compare itself). Despite this, it's still an apple packing town at heart and most of the population are Latino farm workers. 2/7

Another #autumn #hiking in the #PNW thread. Started with a hike up Crystal Peak, which has this excellent view of Mt Rainier, right in your face, with a lot of new snow on it (and there was a bit on the trail too). Crystal Peak is inside Mt Rainier National Park, East of the Mountain and just South of the Crystal Mountain Ski Resort. That's the White River running down the valley there, it joins the Puyallup and empties into Puget Sound at Tacoma. 1/7

2) farst gesture drawings. Divide a big paper into rectangles. Draw a model in one rectangle in no more than 1 minute. Then do it again and again with different poses. Do it 20 times. You won't have time to do more than lay out the main masses and composition each time-- and that's the point. It's an exercise, like playing scales on piano. It forces you to start by making decisions about mass, focus, and composition--the foundations of your work.

1) Draw from a photograph, say,
of your dog. But turn the photo upside down and draw it the way you see it--upside down. We have a mental image in our head of what a dog "should" look like and drawing it upside down short-circuits that and forces you to use the other part of your brain that can transcribe the dog in front of you, not the one in your head. It won't be pretty. But it trains your brain and your hands and you'll learn something about yourself.

More random garden things: I also
thinned this patch of Aspidistra 'Asahi' today. It's a lovely plant but flawed. Aspidistra, or cast iron plant, is better known as a houseplant. But some cultivars are hardy in the #PNW including this Japanese one with unique variegation--only the tips turn white. Those white tips stain brown with age so I trim the oldest to let newer growth take over. And I found this cool bug: iNaturalist says this is an immature green stink bug. #Gardening #Insects #fall

A few things still blooming in the garden. 1: my primroses are going for round 2 (in our climate they will often rebloom in September if they're adequately watered through the summer). 2: a non-hardy begonia that somehow overwintered in this pot and is now showing off bigly. 3: my favorite hardy begonia, B. grandis alba, which loves this one spot in my garden and refuses to grow anywhere else. #Gardening #PNW #fall #Bloomscrolling

It's fall and I'm doing cleanup in the garden. I've removed this Mahonia 'Charity' (the branches with the pointy yellow leaves) which has been near our front steps for over a decade. It's been slowly dying for the past six months and I don't know why. Also removed a Tasmanian pepper (Drymis lanceolata) which was damaged in the cold snaps of ''23 and '24 and never recovered. I need to rethink this area as it's shadier than it was when I designed it in 2014. #Gardening #PNW #fall

Hi former art professor here. The standard text we used for drawing was Betty Edwards' "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain." It explains a lot about how to really see what you are looking at, and how that translates into marks on paper. It's a little dated, especially the parts about brain hemispheres and their functions, but then again drawing hasn't changed that much in 500 years. It's still worth a read. Hiking Ptarmigan Ridge part 8. On the way back down I took the scenic route through the Chain Lakes and you can see here, too, that fall has arrived. The red leaves here are blueberry bushes. Yellow leaves on the mountain ash or rowan (Sorbus aucuparia), a tree in the rose family, seen commonly in subalpine environments in the Cascades and also found right around the Northern hemisphere.

Hiking Ptarmigan Ridge part 2. Here's what fall looks like at elevation: some of the grass is yellowing and the blueberry plants are turning purple and red. Unfortunately due to the climate breakdown, wildfires are now so common this time of year that you actually see the haze obscuring the more distant peaks. "It's a crowded hike but there's room to spread out." That's what I told myself last Saturday. Mt Baker (Komo Kulshan) is one of the prettiest places in the Washington Cascades, and you can't get a better view of it than from here. Ptarmigan Ridge runs between Mt Baker and its neighbor, Mt Shuksan, and is accessed by a road that runs to the adjacent ski area. It's fairly unique in that the whole hike is at or above the tree line. A short thread with #nativeplants. #hiking #PNW #getoutside

I just knew it had glossy leaves and is related to African violets but is hardy in the #PNW. It's been growing quietly in a large shady container with some baby rhodies. Today I noticed it's blooming. In September. When they open fully I'll add more pics.

This is pretty much a population density map, with Arkansas and Oklahoma over-represented and Rhode Island somewhat underrepresented. In other words a map of the Bigfoot believing population.

It's fantastic. This is the only place I've been able to get any distance into it, it's intriguingly remote. Some big fires in there right now, mostly north of Glacier Peak, and a lot of access points are closed (I was in the far Southwest part of it which is till open).

Lost Creek Ridge part 11. For the following day's descent I was basically hiking through a cloud. Photo 1: The magenta blooms of fireweed stand out even in the mist. Photo 2: lichen growing on the trees at the top of the ridge. Photo 3: that's Sloan Peak, a popular climbing destination. Eventually this moisture will tamp down the fires but we've got weeks to go. In the meantime it's a reminder that fall is on the way. End.

Lost Creek Ridge part 10. Photo 1: blueberries for breakfast. Photo 2: this little clubmoss (Diphasiastrum sitchense or Sitka club moss, and yes I had to look that up) is doing its thing with its cones. It's an easy plant to overlook but club mosses are vastly older than the dinosaurs and once grew to the size of trees and covered the whole Earth. Now it's content just to cover this boulder.

Lost. Reel Ridge part 9. Thunderstorms moving across the mountains visible from miles away. (Photo 1). Lightning strikes from these dry-ish storms start new blazes constantly. it did rain a bit, but with everything this dry it's not enough to put out a fire. Photo 2: you can (just barely) see the glacier capped cone of Mt Baker away to the North. The layer of brown murk surrounding it is the pall of smoke from various fires.

Lost Creek Ridge part 7. Occasionally I passed through glens with these huge (I assume glacial) debris fields in them. Last time I was up here, in 2000, these fields were alive with little snowmelt streams and rivulets pouring off the mountain. This year the snow pack was abysmal and they're all dried up. Only a handful of these of these gorgeous little flowers (Parnassia fimbriata), too; they grow only in wet rocky meadows.

Lost Creek Ridge part 5. The trail switchbacks endlessly up this ridge--almost 4000 feet in just about three miles. The wilderness boundary is the top of the ridge. Once you get up there the trail levels out and breaks out of the trees into meadows filled with wildflowers. The magenta flowers are our ubiquitous fireweed. All the trees are the same size and the canopy is close and dense; almost no undergrowth. I've been busy--another hiking thread with plants. This time we're going into the Glacier Peak Wilderness. Glacier Peak is Washington State's 4th highest mountain-- and also a stratovolcano--but few people see it because it's really inaccessible, surrounded by roadless wilderness in the vast Mt Baker Snoqualmie National Forest. One trailhead into that wilderness is via Lost Creek Ridge, about 2-1/2 hours drive from Seattle. A short thread #hiking #backpacking #PNW #nativeplants #getoutside

Hiking Upper Lena Lake part 7. But a really special place is about a mile farther on: this small lake called Milk Lake. Look at that color! These photos were shot on iPhone 13 Pro with no adjustments. Apple camera process does kind of oversaturate a bit but the real thing is very nearly this bright. That blue color is from dissolved minerals in the water (copper perhaps?). No fish here but there are tadpoles. All in all well worth the climb.

Hiking Upper Lena Lake part 5. The trail climbs 4000 ft (1220m) into the Olympic Mountains. In the subalpine meadows all that's really blooming anymore is fireweed (Chamaenerion angustifolium) and cow parsnip (Heracleum maximum). But if you look close, there's always a few interesting little plants: the white leafed one is (I think) wooly sunflower (Eriophyllum lanatum) and the red beady one is Sedum divergens or Pacific stonecrop. #hiking #PNW #nativeplants #getoutside

Some views of Cattle Point, San Juan Island National Historic Park. This is where the American military quartered their troops during the border dispute. No formal gardens here but look at those meadows full of thistles and pearly everlasting. Look at those gnarly contorted shore pines. Before white settlement the Samish Indians used this site to haul in vast quantities of salmon and they dried the meat in the sunny windy summer weather.

Some San Juan island history: for a while in the 1800s both the US and British Canada laid claim to the island (the border treaty was unclear on which side of the island the border was to be drawn) and militaries of both nations established camps to support their claims. The British did so in part with a formal garden, parterres and all, for the enjoyment of their officers. It's still there, maintained as part of the historic site. #gardening #VancouverIsland

Here's another garden with a fabulous parking strip. This one is pretty well known locally, it's been on a couple garden tours. In contrast to the last post, this one is actually pretty labor intensive (lots of annuals here, high water needs too). Last photo: here is your lowest maintenance parking strip option. But don't be fooled: even gravel isn't maintenance free. This strip will be full of weeds in in 6 months, even if they used weed block fabric. #gardening #Bloomscrolling #lawn

Took a walk today and looked at parking strips (verges, hell strips, whatever). Photo 1 is your typical. Photos 2 & 3 show a parking strip that has reached its potential. It's all drought tolerant flowering perennials and shrubs. But get this--the second strip isn't any more work to maintain than the first one. Grass is not your lowest maintenance option. Add up the time you spend mowing, fixing & fueling the mower, watering, feeding, weeding, and you'll see.

I've given up shopping at places that have these. I've literally walked out of stores rather than deal with them. Of course I realize that I'm privileged enough to be able to just go to the same company's website, order online, and have it delivered to my door by the next morning. Often the people who need these products the most just don't have that luxury. They have to buy in person.

It's very otherworldly. The flowers are so tame I was not expecting seeds like that.

Earlier this year I posted photos of a woodland peony (Paeonia mariei ) in bloom my garden (photo 1). Now the flowers have gone to seed and the seed capsules have ripened and opened and the result is pretty trippy (photo 2-3).

Looks like something I dug out of the back of the vegetable drawer in my refrigerator...

Ha! Maybe they only use the recycled water for urinals?

Sea-Tac Airport in Seattle also uses gray water for their toilet systems but I think their signs give a little more context

Exclusively in Portland or exclusively in the men's as opposed to the women's? The latter would explain a lot actually 😆

Happening now in my garden: I was going to cut down this second year parsley plant because it's grown into a beast then I noticed all these little beetles frolicking about on the flowers. Anyone know what they are? @npub1nw7…g0ek

That is such a weird sounding cross I had to look it up. Desert Willow is apparently in the catalpa family too o guess?

seeds are fair game as far as I'm concerned. It's not like the Fred Meyer landscape team is going to collect them.

Hiking Stiletto Park part 12. Panorama of the view from the top. Photo 2: My hiking guidebook mentioned a climbers scramble trail to the true peak. I spent an hour searching only to find it leads all the way around the peak across a steep debris field and up the far side--too far for so late in the day. The funny thing is that after 5 miles and 3650 feet of elevation gain, I can still see the parking lot where I left my car (photo 3). End of thread.

Hiking Stiletto Park part 11. Nearing the old fire lookout that is the end of the trail, elev 7660 feet. Once there was a little hut here and someone would spend the summer in it with a telescope keeping an eye out for forest fires. It was taken down in the 50s and there are only some rocks left. You can see the neighboring mountain is almost completely burned. It's impossible to travel through the Cascades now without encountering massive areas like this.

Hiking Stiletto Park part 10. I had no idea what this little purple thing was--turns out it's a Delphinium! Plant ID app says maybe it's Sutherland's larkspur (Delphinium sutherlandii). BONAP says that species is only found in far Northeast Washington, not here, but it's still the most likely ID based on flower size and color. For sure a Delphinium, but it's a far cry from the gigantic double-flowered cultivars you see at the nursery.
