Dividend income feels different from selling shares because the cash arrives automatically. That can make it seem like the portfolio produced a return without touching the principal.
But a dividend is not extra money layered on top of the investment. When a company distributes cash, that cash leaves the business, and the share price adjusts to reflect the distribution. Your return still comes from the combination of price change and dividends.
A dividend-first strategy is for investors who value scheduled cash distributions enough to accept the tradeoffs. It is not a shortcut for someone whose priority is maximizing total return and controlling when taxable income is realized.
That control matters in a taxable account. A dividend can create taxable income when the company chooses to pay it, even if you immediately reinvest it. With an asset that retains more of its value, you decide when and how much to sell, subject to market risk and the tax rules that apply to you.
For a FIRE plan, the useful question is not whether an asset pays you on a schedule. It is whether the portfolio compounds well after taxes and can fund your spending when you need it. Dividends may be convenient, but convenience should not be mistaken for a higher return.
