What if they see that, but there are other constrains which enforce them to accept the status quo? Constrains which not always are in their control. Or maybe they are hyped so much that they cannot see the verso of the whole LLM industry. I think that we should rather sympathise with them, because they are used not at their will. Propaganda has its use from hundreds of years.

If I would need to hang cabinets, I would try to do my best and learn how to do that, so in case of falling, I can fix them on my own. Handyman does not need to care about quality of their work, it should be just enough. They know that you will come back, because you do not know how to hang those cabinets. It is in their interest to not do the work perfectly, because this means more work and more money.

You could install NetBSD first on another disk, then mount FFS/ZFS partition from Fedora and then copy data. Linux recognizes FFS as UFS.

My half cent: what might help is reminding that there is nothing for free. Convenience costs privacy, personal skills, cognitive abilities and freedom. One should ask oneself - is this trade worth it? Do I want to be dependent on someone else? If more and more things in my life depend on something out of my control which can disappear one day, who I really am? If someone will still make decision to choose convenience then at least they are aware of cost.
And more thing which say folks on gym - no pain, no gain. If you spend the time on crossing learning curve, then you not only gain a skill, you also increase your self-confidence. And no rush, it is not a sprint, but a marathon.

NetBSD has compat_linux(8) and wine, so if applications is not ported, there is a chance that it will work over compatibility layers. The other option is using qemu+nvmm to run another OS with specific software with native-ish speed.

Absolutely, that software might be also helpful if someone uses web browser which does not have any adblocking plugin or they use other applications which connect to the Internet and they do not use DNS sink (like pi-hole).

My heart wants to agree, my mind reminds me a clunky translation of Zhuangzi's excerpt:
> Only when you destroy the sages and pardon all the thieves and robbers can the world begin to be ordered. When the stream is dried, the valley is empty; when the mound is levelled, the deep pool (beside it) is filled up. When the sages have died, the great robbers will not arise; the world would be at peace, and there would be no more troubles. While the sagely men have not died, great robbers will not cease to appear.
The only thing is sure - good and bad people will not disappear. And maybe that's the point?

You may also try switching a download protocol from https to ftp and see if this will change anything. You can also install pkgin manually - https://netbsd.org/docs/misc/index.html#pkgin. Maybe the shell stdout will be more talkative. Usually such problem is related to IPv6 or CDN.

2026-09-24 11:51:19 UTC

- reply

You might try turning off IPv6:
(1) Drop to the shell
(2) Edit /etc/rc.conf
(3) Add:ip6addrctl=YESip6addrctl_policy=ipv4_prefer
And then try again. If this will not help then it might be rather a CDN issue, you can also run sysinst after rebooting any time and install pkgin/pkgsrc later.

2026-09-24 11:45:13 UTC

- reply

In sysinst configuration menu you have various options like installing pkgin/binary packages, there is also option for pkgsrc/ports to be installed. Option "f" - .

The answer depends on the "size" of the distro indirectly. Small distro can afford prohibiting LLM code without any discussion, big distro will have more vocal audience hence flipping on any side is more probable than deliberate choosing The Way. My opinion is that in "capitalism" world/business the moni is the only understandable language (this is a very great simplification and generalisation). If someone wants to be a special client, they should pay it for that, then they can look at Excel spreadsheet and calculate what is their way - shouting "urgent", paying more, having problem fixed 5 minutes earlier or being quiet, paying less, having problem fixed without significant delay.
