2/ Ok the sun has gone down and I made it through the day with no AC. When I discovered the unit had quit late morning I closed all the shades and the residual cool from before the unit quit did a pretty good job of keeping the downstairs livable. It's reached its peak now at 82F downstairs and 92F upstairs. It's finally gone below 92 outside so I opened the upstairs windows and put a fan in one of them. It'll be late tonight before I can open the downstairs windows. Took a cool shower. HVAC company can't come until Tuesday. Tomorrow will be much worse because the residual cool is now all gone. 🥵

Sadly, those attacks turned the U.S. into a different country. And I'm sure someone else will pop in with "the U.S. was always that country!" to which I say, settle down. Anyway, for the scifi nerds out there, the series Babylon 5 presciently captured a world power's slide into a militaristic, paranoid society many years before the terrorist attacks. Another thing that comes to mind for me is the sick crawling feeling I had the first time I hear Bush utter the word "homeland." It was like the future had opened up before me to see, and it was very, very dark.

Did I grit my teeth to vote for Hillary Clinton even though I didn't personally like her as a politician? Yes I did. I'd be damned if I'd vote for a racist, misogynist, accused child rapist, and Russian sympathizer. And I do damn all those who did. Had more people who didn't prefer this or that about Clinton gritted their teeth in 2016 the U.S. would still be a reliable and stable global power today. That's a good description. People who just won't vote because they demand candidates that are political clones of themselves are, I would describe as, immature. The rest of us need them to grow up and vote for the least harmful to the public good, not the most perfectly fit to one's singular opinion on every issue--that candidate doesn't exist.

My #weather forecast has been basically crazy for months, maybe a year. It changes dramatically, suddenly, throughout the day, and going up to a week ahead, forget it. I really can't plan well when it comes to watering the flowers & garden. If I think we're getting rain and don't water, the forecast is wrong. If I think it'll be dry and I water, later a thunderstorm will drop an inch.

The interesting question is, if all of these things were available to all, would the all-volunteer military still attract more people than it can accept? The main reason military accession goals haven't been hit for some years is because most applicants don't meet the minimum requirements. If everyone had all the benefits given to the military, would no one apply? And then like some other countries, would the U.S. institute a period of national service for all young people? U.S. citizens would go completely nuts over that.

This is true although not complete. We (Service members) make a trade. We agree to forego many of our rights we had as civilians and submit to a different legal code, and we agree to perform dangerous tasks of varying risk including death when legally ordered to do so.
I've yammered on for years that all of these things would contribute to national security if provided to all citizens and we obviously have the financial capacity to do all of this and more. We have the capacity to enact any policy decisions we want. People indoctrinated on lies prevent all of this from happening.

There's huge business to be had for car companies selling cars with zero telematics & other surveillance b.s. in them, but since that's not very likely, there's huge business to be had for killing all that crap in people's cars. I think it's been over a year since I ate any fast food. It amazes me that a lot of people spend money at least weekly if not almost daily on prepared food. How can anyone save money doing that? Restaurant food, even if fast food, is super expensive. For instance, I really like Five Guys. Last time I stopped there for a burger while on a trip, their small, single burger was $10. That was maybe 2 years ago. That's completely insane.

Well I come at this as a veteran who also spent a career in federal civil service. I see it differently. I did leave my position at a high level in the IC during Trump's first year in office...I saw him as the most significant insider threat the U.S. has ever seen, and it had a huge impact on my life and every day watching what goes on kills me. But even as a civil servant I participated in protests and I still do today. I get that lots of civilians will see it exactly the way he intended them to, there's no way to explain my view to them, they'd have to live it. But there will be more military holding my view and more non-mil/vets holding the other view. Nothing to be done about that🤷 He got what he wanted but he's not doing any favors to the military by doing this in uniform, it plays into the narratives of people who would love to paint Service members as political actors. That's not good.

I think this term came into vogue as a euphemism that seeks to disguise the rapidly increasing extreme wealth gap and dire financial straits of a larger and larger portion of the population, which has resulted in a shrinking middle class and a huge population of people who, despite working more, have less and less purchasing power. This term makes me despise those I call "corporate Dems" who came up with it, because the term itself is a bad faith attempt to fool people about their situation. Who is the working class? Might be me, might be someone else, who knows? The politicians don't have to explain it. They use the language of heroism to describe teachers, restaurant workers, tradespeople, you-name-it. But if you're a white collar worker who sits behind a desk and could barely survive a month without a paycheck because these corporate pols refuse to tax their billionaire overlords, it's you too, and you know it.

I'm not seeing much commentary on how the insane sentences for the Texas Prairieland "antifa terrorists" are a symptom of having been tried in Texas, which is how the law works but also subjects protesters to extremist juries and judges in red states & districts. We saw this partisanship happen with Kyle Rittenhouse, as well, when he had a judge who obviously sympathized with him and treated him with special deference throughout the trial as if he was a hero. If these protesters were tried in a blue area and had Dem-appointed judges, certainly the shooter would have been convicted of the shooting but some of the charges might not have stuck to some of the charged protesters, and the sentencing would likely have been wildly different for some or all of them. Is justice blind? Not even slightly. Judges, especially right wing ones, are political activists who are driving agendas as much as any anti-fascist protester.

I just watched video of a woman taking a picture of the reflecting pool, then she touched the water for a second. A guy in plainclothes took pics of her and then called over the cops & nat'l guard to arrest her. For touching the water. She did literally nothing to the property.
That's how fascism is going in the U.S. there are plainclothes creeps guarding the stupid reflecting pool. Fuck Trump and his baby ass ego. That final Big Mac cannot come soon enough.

So interesting. I took a walk down memory lane via google maps to see what's become of where I used to live in the late 60s / early 70s outside of Urbana, IL. The old farmstead is long gone but my elementary school is still there and the jr. high is now a middle school with a name change. I noticed the name "Mira" outside of town and recalled us kids riding our bikes from the farm down to "Mira Station," the old grain elevator. Inside the elevator's office, we could buy little glass bottles of pop like Coca-Cola or Yoo-Hoo for a coin, maybe a nickel or dime. And we could sit in there and listen to the farmers gossiping. Anyway, I found an article on Mira Station, which is now long gone. There are a couple of old pictures showing the farmers hanging out in the office.
