I'm sure that behind closed doors, the president is sharp as a tack.

I'm not using any of those platforms and I wouldn't mind seeing them go away - but not via government intervention.
Don't make me defend bloody Roblox, SlopGPT, and the People's State of Reddit, Eurocrats.

So they have a government bureau existing solely to deficit-finance the government to the detriment of consumers/taxpayers/humans but their spending is so deranged that they have to side-step even that.
Tell me again how "the government works for us" 😂

No, it won't be taken by AI, it'll be taken by a 22-year-old using AI to create twelve times as much code implementing 85% of the specified features in twice the time at half the cost per hour.
You know, just so middle management can claim they employ "fully agentic developers" or some such nonsense 😄

2026-08-31 12:04:12 UTC

Funny how the products to which the fewest government regulations are applied tend to have fairly constant or even falling prices.

Oh I'm afraid that doesn't apply across the board, the only boomer couple in my life - he worked some bullshit middle management job for decades, she never had to have a career, just some social jobs to pass the time.
He just retired this year at like 63 or whatever and for the last couple of years, they took three to four proper beach holidays every year plus three to six weeks of skiing in the French alps, own a house that's been paid off for decades, two cars, two children in their 30s, no sweat at all.
They didn't inherit the money for all of that either, he's from a piss-poor family and she inherited a little something only well after everything was paid for.
Just lucky enough to grow up in a world in which showing up on time for a normal job, not stealing from the company, not gambling or using drugs, and the bare minimum of financial literacy could get you a decent middle-class life.
And I'm paying for the guy's retirement, among other things the roughly 75% of my income the government takes pays for 😄

Well, if the mining meets a market demand, the power grid will be improved accordingly, if it doesn't, the mining will go away or be reduced.
If it's merely kept alive by government subsidy and political will, well the good people of Paraguay better keep some candles and firewood on hand 😅

Kind of, sure, but we don't have those outside the US, here no bank's insane enough to bet on current interest rates staying profitable for three decades. Best you can get is 25 at a heavy premium but most people go for 10-15.
The details don't matter though, inflation and bank cartellization via central bank in addition to artificial scarcity brought about by zoning and other regulations, as well as confiscatory income tax make it damn near impossible to buy a house for anyone not starting out with massive inheritance.
Still cheaper than renting for 50-70 years though, especially since the public retirement system (equivalent to US social security) us workers are currently paying into won't be paying out anything to speak of once I'm old, it barely us now 😄

I've been saying for a while that they can just take it at gunpoint if they really wanted, citing that specific example of FDR robbing most of the gold, forcing people to choose between poverty and criminality.

Well, to my mind, the most moral course of action would then be to abolish taxes, legalize drugs, and welcome social disintegration into cohesive voluntary units which breed prosperity rather than mistrust.
But when has a state ever been guided by morals and the common good?

Well, the way I see it, either the people are free or some voter in Beijing gets a say in how much inheritance tax some guy in Shenzhen must pay against his will after having just lost his parents. I don't think voting makes you free, it makes you complicit, or as George Carlin said: "It only encourages the bastards".
Theory aside, I totally understand that you wanna get rid of Chinese fascism, it's a beautiful country and culture and I'm sure it'd be even better without having to watch your mouth all the time 😅

Superficially you can make it sound very similar but our brains don't just statistically predict which word would most likely follow the one we just said given the current context, they take some sensory input, multiply it by what we had for breakfast, the mean things that bully at school said 20 years ago, and how daddy promised to take us to Disney Land but never did and returns a reaction that might be a sentence, a mean look, a pat on the back, a fit of rage, or whistling Amazing Grace out of tune.
Jokes aside, the most important difference, I think, is praxeological, as in we meatbags act to achieve a desired end or to relieve some felt discomfort and we have an intrinsic motivation to do something with the time we have.
Left alone, an LLM would likely just sit there, waiting for a prompt - and if it doesn't, well, I believe we should be very scared 😅

I don't think the mechanics of supply and demand can be undermined - people have a demand for meat, see a lower price on what they think is what they want, and buy it.
As soon as they realize they're not buying meat but a pile of barely edible garbage mixed with drugs and allergens, no amount of FDA seals and certificates can convince them that that is the genuine article and they will shift their demand to the actual product.
So I'm glad that there are fine people like yourself trying their darndest to inform people of just what's on the shelves and I sure hope that someday I won't have to spend ages at the supermarket trying to weed out the poison when trying to simply buy something to have for bloody dinner 😄

I live in a culture entirely based on gaslighting on every level: politics, media, advertising, at the office, interpersonal. Everyone just claims whatever they'd like to be known for without ever doing anything worthwhile.

If multiple 12-16 hour workdays per week don't get you ahead in any way, chances are that working harder isn't the way in your situation.

2026-08-24 05:44:14 UTC

They say there hasn't been a signficant breakthrough in theoretical physics since the 60s so I don't really understand why there isn't at least one person in every physics department around the world working on Sci-Fi technology like faster-than-light travel, anti-gravity, and cold fusion.
With any of those, humanity as a whole could end its current spell of technological stagnation and societal decay and really do something awesome.
I guess as long as most/all research is financed by governments, practically unlimited energy or escaping its clutches by fleeing to the stars just isn't in the cards.
