Maybe, maybe not. As the Fediverse contains many different servers with different software, like Mastodon, Misskey, Gotosocial, Peertube and many more, it needs a lot of coordination and maybe even fundamental changes on the protocol level of ActivityPub which is what all implement. And many instances are NOT under EU jurisdiction, so getting it to work everywhere will be difficult. Maybe you want to discuss with @npub1764…nuj0 and more ppl from the ActivityPub working group?

One concern is that in its current form, this act means that operators of Fediverse instances are made responsible to ensure that children below the age of 18 cannot make public posts. Yes, I know, its heart rate measurements aren't that reliable, compared to Apple. But it is definitely in GoodEnough™ range for me. It also does SpO2, tracks my sleep, watches over my body temperature and more little things. And it just looks beautiful! The biggest pro however: 30+ days on a charge. No more daily charging!
I made a note to post a 30 day review, so let's see how this goes :)

I don't do outrage about tech stuff that much anymore. I became quite mellow over the years in that regard. Stuff comes and goes. With that said:
Now that Apple has announced that the Apple Watch becomes an iSpy by continuously transcribing what you say, it was time to switch away from it. But I do like the health stuff, measuring heart rate and SpO2, workouts etc. I also like good looks. So. I went back to Withings, a French company. Here's my Scanwatch 2 :)

It's the other way around. ICANN is the master. And ICANN has so far been quite OK-ish at defending the freedom of The Net. My personal preference would be to have no centralisation at all. But knowing that is impossible in the way DNS works, the next best solution would be to put ICANN under the UN, not the US. One letter, big consequences :)

At the core of the global internet are the DNS root servers. These 13 go-to places are at the top of authority when it comes to making sure you can connect to any server with a domain name. What you might not know is that 10 of these 13 root servers are ultimately under US jurisdiction. Should that worry you? I guess not, the current system is quite robust. But I deal in risk assessment and probabilities. And I think this isn't an ideal setup.

PIR, the Public Interest Registry ("Based in Reston, Virginia, Public Interest Registry is a nonprofit organization created by the Internet Society to manage the .ORG domain."), seems to have put autistici.org on status serverHold and that is why you cannot resolve their name anymore. This is what can happen to your .org domain name when the Trump administration decides to add you to the OFAC (Office of Foreign Assets Control) list.

One of the reasons is that here in Europe I see a lot of the same people in the Digital Sovereignty field that I already know from the National Cloud movement around 7-10 years ago. Still trying to get taxpayers money for their projects that promise a lot but don't deliver. Not going there again!

PocketID allows me to add Passkeys to my homelab as Single Sign On that is not as complex to configure and maintain compared to Keycloak or Authentik. And I can use Yubikeys for hardware based security too! What is not to like :)

I also run my own DNS server, because I want to be sure that my homelab only needs a power connection to be able to offer all needed services for me and my guests while making sure every part can also run on the wide open internet with a few simple commands.
But the design principle is always: local first. full digital autonomy for my home.

I guess I will add #PocketID [1] to my homelab. I already have my own CA (Certificate Authority) with step-ca [2] and my own S3 compatible storage layer with Garage [3], so it seems to be the perfect companion to create a "simple datacenter in a few boxes" that supports open(-ish) standards but without the complexity of running an oversized infrastructire layer. Small and open is beautiful.

Mail server stats: 299 connection requests from IP addresses in the bc.googleusercontent.com range in the past 72 hours, 100% of them trying to dump spam/phishing mails, claiming to be from microsoft.com, ubuntu.com, GitHub.com and many more. The Fediverse is about people, so we should focus on people. Not on systems or black boxes that use algorithms. Hearing aid hacker needed! My father‘s hearing aids are being repaired, so the shop gave him a pair of Signia Motion C&G SP 1IX as temporary replacement. Nice. BUT. It seems they were configured as trial devices, this wasn’t mentioned to my father. The trial period has ended a few hours ago, so now they play an annoying melody every 2 minutes and we cannot stop this. The hearing aid specialist is on vacation until end next week. So. Anyone knows how to fix this?

Hörgeräte sind ja auch Mist. Mein Vater hat übergangsweise Leihgeräte (Signia Motion C&G SP 1IX) bekommen weil seine eigenen Hörgeräte grad repariert werden. Und jetzt bimmeln diese Ersatzgeräte alle 2 Minuten weil die wohl eingestellte Testphase vorbei ist. Der Hörgeräteakustiker ist aber seit heute im Urlaub. Was macht man da? Kenne ich einen Hörgeräteakustiker im Weserbergland der das resetten kann oder den Trick kennt wie man das selbst macht?

When I say (small, edge) LLMs will become tools, that also reflects my deeper thinking that you should never anthropomorphise[1] them. They are not persons or characters. They don't think. They don't understand any context like true or wrong. They are tools. And right now I am not convinced they are always good tools :)

The second element I have heard a few times now: "AI" written code is not seen as "my" code by coders. They don't feel attached to it in the way they do with code they have written themselves. Hence they are not really "feeling" for it, so they are also not really interested in making it better or defending it in the review cycle. Just tweak the prompt and move on. This is having a real impact on motivation, discussion and results. It is hard to put in metrics, though.

Code reviewing was never the most interesting thing to do. But it had one important element. That, if done right, it was knowledge exchange between the reviewer and the coder. That can be quite motivating. Helping a fellow coder to become better. Reviewing "AI" written code does NOT come with that potential reward. The machine doesn't learn the way a human does. This turns code reviewing into a menial, fruitless task that leads to frustration instead. That's my observation and opinion.

HN discusses PeerTube, and the first reply starts with „As a professional YouTuber, the main issue I instantly see with this is the lack of monetization.“
And I immediately think: so maybe that’s the thing we should focus on. Keep that kind of monetisation out to create a place for those that don’t compete for money, but for quality. Yes, I’m that naive, but the Fediverse is an alternative to many things, not a drop-in replacement to for-profit services to me.
