Great reading your real life stories of what real people need help dealing with! 😀🙏🏻

Illustrating so much that is… not right, & thanks to The Age for sharing. 🙏🏻 Two comments, original extract below (it’s longish, no time to edit it).
1. This company shares that it will now halt speculative data centre construction & land buys for which it has *NO CLIENTS*. How did we catch this US disease so quickly & why is it spreading so fast when there’s so many other, much more productive things that could be done with the capital to be wasted in this way?
2. Reporter notes that “data centre construction is one of the few bright spots in the sluggish Australian economy”. If this is a bright spot there’s something really badly wrong. What about all the other construction priorities that these speculative builds are sucking the air, materials, skilled labour force away from & jacking up inflation in the meantime? Who’s actually running this show? When did govts get so passive?
“The market reaction against the data centre developer was sharp: NextDC shares collapsed to $5.46 on Wednesday, down more than 40 per cent from their Monday closing price of $9.57. The crash wiped billions off the company’s valuation, driving its stock to its lowest point since 2019 – a far cry from its peak of $17.22 a year ago.
“NextDC on Wednesday also revealed it was putting the brakes on its wider construction pipeline, in a move which could alarm state and federal governments as data centre construction is one of the few bright spots in the sluggish Australian economy.
“NextDC slashed its construction budget for the coming financial year from up to $5.75 billion to between $4.5 billion and $5 billion, pausing developments without client contract commitments. Previously, the company had built new data centres without having tenants contracted to go into them.
“NextDC chief executive Craig Scroggie said the company, as well as pausing expectations from its West Footscray project, would also halt speculative expansion projects and land buys not already locked in by paying clients.”

Think a lot of people want it to be true & there’s certainly a lot of anecdata but we don’t seem to have the appropriate metrics to confirm it either way. 😕

Jeremy Hsu pointing out - on 13 Oct - that Russia’s getting back what it started (kabooming data centres) is not working out so well for them because: centralised (Ukraine’s are more decentralised, some even underground). Several lessons here in realms from population & business control issues to war tactics & strategy, but what caught my attention in this piece was the “petaflops”
& supercomputer rankings. Some other technical details too.
Also, is it just coincidence that one of the kaboomed DCs was named Vladimir & that Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin just had his birthday? (74 years young, thanks for asking 🤮).
“It was not immediately clear how much damage may have occurred to the supercomputers, which are based on Nvidia A100 GPU chips. The Chervonenkis supercomputer has a computing performance rated at 29.42 petaflops and ranks at 101 on the Top 500 List of supercomputers, while the Lyapunov supercomputer is rated at 20.03 petaflops and ranks at 161.”
“… A third Ukrainian drone strike then forced Yandex to suspend operations at its data center in Vladimir, east of Moscow, on October 11, according to BBC News. This facility houses the third of Yandex’s three supercomputers, Galushkin, which ranked 134 on the Top 500 list and is rated at 20.64 petaflops of computing performance.”
Among the Comments this by motytrah addresses the bots & trolls traffic (which we’re struggling to get a handle on as it seems we don’t have appropriate metrics to clarify anecdata):
“… one thing I don't like about the reporting on this is everyone on social media says this took out bot nets. That doesn't actually seem to be the case. It's more likely the loss of Yandex indexing traffic means the bot nets can't find new social content to astroturf.”

Translated from the Korean by DeepL; “Reports suggest that a drone attack by Ukraine has damaged the AI data centre of a company known as ‘Russia’s Google’. This infrastructure incident demonstrates that data centres essential for the operation of AI services can be directly exposed to the risks of war and physical security threats, and is likely to affect regional AI computing capacity and continuity.”

Well well well, the Firmus plot thickens, in Tasmania they got a local council level approval then sought variations which would have needed an EPA (higher level) approval… treating Tasmanians like idiots: “EPA likely to have assessed project if proposed use was higher.” The EPA has now joined the appeals against:
“In its October 7 submission, seen by the ABC, the [EPA] board said it was originally told the generators would be used "just for emergency use in the event of a power failure", [not] during normal operation other than for scheduled weekly exercise runs of less than two hours, annual load tests, and utility outage events.
“The board said Firmus's recent appeal showed it planned on using the generators in more circumstances than it thought.
“That variation, if part of the original proposal, would likely have resulted in the Board making a different decision in relation to whether to assess the proposal," the board said.
"Seeking to enlarge the use of the diesel generators post-approval undermines the Board's determination and changes the environmental risk profile posed by the activity."
“It pointed out that if Firmus's appeal against the condition around generator use is upheld, it could allow it to subvert EPA processes it likely would have been subjected to "if the proposal had been accurately presented".”
Firmus also now changing its story on building additional power generation in Tassie.

Another: “Capitalistic society is not collapsing under the specter of AI because AI is all-powerful; it is doing so because it has always been brittle. A world in which a person’s entire fate—economic, social, physical—depends on an unfettered labor market, with institutional protections for a middle class5 and for culture hollowed out, is so fragile at every level that a chatbot encounters no difficulty convincing its depraved managerial class to initiate a society’s death sequence.”
In a footnote he (Michael O. Church) says: “Writing precisely, in any language, remains a nontrivial task.” And I could note agree more. This person can *write*

Interesting, thoughtful, well-written long read. Glad I invested the time. Learnt heaps. Much to consider. Suspect the argument is compelling but need to read again. Along the way, many gems, including: “… it is hard to be sure what language models know, but it becomes plausible that artificial intelligence providers, seeing as they compete against academic mathematicians over prestige theorems, while also using session transcripts for training, are absorbing unpublished work and, in effect, “scooping” their clients.
“It is plausible that artificial intelligence will spawn new methods of automated reasoning. It’s also plausible that human creativity is being stolen for marketing purposes. It would be good to know which is which. Right now, we don’t [know]”

That’s a horrifying statistic: “There are now more full-time lobbyists influencing the EU’s digital policies, than there are MEPs in the European Parliament.‘“ 🙀
I’d like to know what the European Parliament says &/or does about that situation (do they fund alternate voices or assist citizens to also lobby?) or why they accept it. Also how many have been corrupted through which avenues. 🤔
(Sorry - I know you probably can’t tell me but it seems to me that this is just the ‘tip of the iceberg’ of an unacceptable circumstance & it does seem to explain why so much proposed law doesn’t seem to favour citizens/ voters. ☹️)

More weirdo stuff: “Trump goes everywhere with a 35-year-old blonde aide named Natalie Harp, whom New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman has deemed his “human binky.””
and
“Whatever the extent of Natalie Harp’s duties, it seems undeniable that she is there to keep the temperamental president calm by distracting him from his own failures with words of praise. That he needs this is a sign of profound weakness. Stable adults do not need full-time babysitters. That Harp’s job even exists is a testament to Trump’s incredible narcissism, but it also carries more than a whiff of elder care and suspicions about medical conditions that require monitoring and placating.”
Apparently Thump’s minders are worried, now that dots have been connected, that thump doesn’t appear strong & virile but weak & feeble…

Local issues signpost wider salience/ relevance; this from an Axios article re a private (read ‘secret’) memo by the Senate GOP campaign to major AI companies, warning: “toxic views of U.S. data centers are killing the party's chances of holding a vital seat in Ohio.”
“State of play: Republicans say in the memo, headlined "Ohio Data Center Risk," that it's up to AI companies to improve perceptions of data centers by explaining "who benefits, who pays, and why a community should want one."
“"Until that happens, the issue will continue to dominate this race…”
“The bottom line: The memo argues that a [candidate] Husted loss would cause long-lasting damage to AI companies in their push to build data centers nationwide to power future generations of AI.
“"If voters' perceptions of data centers are not fixed quickly, the campaign against them will expand far beyond Ohio," the party warns.”

Fascinating how quickly substantial outcomes were gained: “This study shows just how fast the benefits can come to life. At these two sites, it took under four years for functioning habitat to return. The biggest resurgence was native bees. Around year two, plants began to mature, and that's when nature took off because hundreds of native bees returned to the land. In early surveys, scientists recorded almost no bees, but by year four, they saw them regularly. Other insects as well, including wasps, moths, flies, butterflies, and beetles. In fact, the number of insects surveyed tripled over five years.”

Slopfix uses AI coding agents itself to do the trimming.” but describes them as being kept on “a very short leash”.

That was great! Thanks for the recommendation. Alan Kohler is a national treasure & Justin Wolfers worth listening to; I especially liked his arguments on immigration = innovation (child of 2 immigrants myself) & his positive admiration of Australia. It really is past time to lose, & to stop acting out on that cultural cringe!
The frightening thing was his costing of the US Presidency at ~$2b and profitable at that price - since est. that Thump made ~$8b last year (in bribes & corruption, not trades, which are chickenshit by comparison - such a small man). In Australia we need to tighten up the money flow potentials for that to happen here. No one - person or group - should be able to buy a Presidency, PM-ship or Premier-ship.

Yes, the experience was a real eye-opener. 🙄
You read in the journals of these ‘early explorers’ of team members driven mad by thirst, & stealing the water rations of their team mates, and you finally understand it. The fact is that there comes a point when you simply cannot drink enough, quickly enough, to replace what you are losing due to the heat & humidity. It is frightening. 😱

Super frightening! I have experienced 49 degree Celsius heat, with the added ‘bonus’ of high humidity, when camping inland (ie not at the coast) along the Fitzroy River (Western Australia): I finally understood what early ‘explorers’ like Stuart & his party experienced: the need to drink water (ie to rehydrate) can dominate everything you do.

Repeating my post-comment on the original Reuters article (a fine piece of reporting): Informative, outrageous; & the Israeli govt apparently knew nothing about it: “Before scrubbing its online presence following enquiries from Reuters, BlackCore described itself as "an elite influence, cyber, and technology company built for the modern era of information warfare." It said it provided governments and political campaigns with "cutting-edge strategies, advanced tools, and robust security to shape narratives."
“It has not responded to repeated requests for comment.

Glad you said this as I’ve read the same, described in recent research: a majority of people used to get more ‘conservative’ as they became older, now they don’t.
In this case conservative = maintaining the status quo, not rocking the boat, etc rather than necessarily Michael’s modest list of ‘wants’.
Suspect you’re correct in reasons why too & that there are more reasons as well. This article [https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-11-26/millennials-rewriting-the-rules-of-australian-politics/106050836] - in the context of Australian electoral cycles - suggests: “Millennials are acutely feeling the pressure of housing unaffordability, the cost of living, and the changing shape of the world.
“Many were told by their parents to study hard, work hard, and were promised that if they did, home ownership and a good job could be theirs.
“Instead, they watched as major technology companies, innovation and AI reshaped the job market and felt increasing casualisation and insecurity in many industries…”

This resonated: “Decades of research in developmental psychology have shown that moral reasoning develops through consequences—not punishment, necessarily, but experiencing the effects of your actions on others, receiving honest feedback, having to accommodate reality as it actually is rather than as you wish it to be. It’s not that the wealthy become evil; it’s that their environment stops teaching them the things that nonwealthy people are forced to learn simply by living in a world that pushes back.”

That ben gvir is a sadist & a coward as well as a bully. I know I’m not saying anything thats new to you but I just need to say it having seen ancient footage of him rushing in to kick someone, defenceless, lying on the ground, having already been beaten by several men with sticks. ben gvir Could have done something else or nothing, but that was what he chose to do & you can tell from the look on his face that he enjoys it, it looks sexual. Revolting. And this is what Israelis are training their population to be? This is their choice? 😐

Michael Crichton’s ‘Disclosure’ (which he says is based on a true story), 1st published in 1994, but still feels contemporary in lots of areas. Enjoyed the complicated plot & the product-based manufacturing problem solving. And then there was this:
“As for Meredith, her behaviour didn’t surprise him at all. For years, Sanders had fought the B-school mentality that she exemplified. After watching these graduates come and go, Sanders had finally concluded that there was a fundamental flaw in their education. They had been trained to believe that they were equipped to manage anything. But there was no such thing as general managerial skills and tools. In the end, there were only specific problems, involving specific industries and specific workers. To apply general tools to specific problems was to fail. You needed to know the market, you needed to know the customers, you needed to know the limits of manufacturing and the limits of your own creative people. None of that was obvious.”

Another great idea that would bump up the infrastructure offerings! That’s something like what this guy is doing (for prime-movers, in Picton area, between Sydney & Wollongong): “Daniel Bleakley, co-founder and co-chief executive of New Energy Transport… says the economics of electric trucks actually get better with heavier loads and longer distances.”
https://archive.is/d4x9x

2026-04-12 02:00:15 UTC

Current situation re electric trucks in Australia, where lots of stuff moves long distances (quoting James Purtill’s ABC article) : “ About a fifth of trucks in Australia are prime movers used for "line haul" long-distance bulk transportation of freight between cities and towns.
“”Battery-powered models are available but have limited applications, Mr Hammond [the Trucking Industry Council's (TIC) chief technical officer] said.
"You'd be lucky to get 300 kilometres on any of the major transport routes before you need probably a two-hour recharge," he said.
More powerful chargers would reduce this time but place a greater strain on the regional power network.
The amount of power required to recharge an electric road train in the space of an hour was about equivalent to that of a small commercial building, which would be more than some towns' spare capacity.
Hundreds of dedicated charging depots would need to be built to electrify intercity freight, and this would be expensive.” [end quote]

Ok…. Now it makes sense… what Prof Toby Walsh was saying in his address to the National Press Club yesterday. He was really pissed off & basically said he no longer felt constrained & would give advice in public in future (ie not in private to govt). Also explains Albo’s seemingly gratuitous badmouthing of Pocock. I suppose a ‘donation’ is about to fall off some big-tech AI-pusher’s truck & into party coffers…
ABC cited Walsh: "Big tech has embraced lobbying in Washington, London, Brussels and now here in Canberra," he said.
"In the last election the big tech sector donated more to the political parties than mining did. That should tell us something."

Finished reading Earthquake by Niki Savva. A book about politics (specifically the ‘surprise’ losses by conservatives of the last 2 Australian elections), full of quotable quotes. From the Introduction (p 3):
“Journalists… seldom welcome being told how to do their jobs better, especially if they are in the business of dividing, not informing, or if they are loathe to deliver tough messages to leaders they like or their owners support. Blindly partisan media—particularly Sky After Dark and the Murdoch Press—create or nurture the fatal flaws that eventually destroy the very people they are desperate to promote. Along the way they wreck their own credibility. Covering up for conservatives—or anybody else—ensures that everyone loses. Including and especially Australians.”

Wish the design people could get on board with smart broadcast campaigns on billboards etc to get maximum attention.
Better education is needed (in one year of my degree our tutor made us wheelchair around town to better understand the issues). 🤔
Everyone knows someone who’s older & less abled, mum with babies in stroller, crutch or wheelchair user, etc.
Enshrining small adjustments in house-building principles & public infrastructure doesn’t take that much & repays several-fold.
Wider doorways, corridors & turning circles that wheelchairs can fit through, ramps as well as or instead of stairs so strollers, prams & bikes have easier access, … add your idea here… 😀

Putting that together with recent estimates that ~40% of people with Covid are asymptomatic & the lack of preventive actions at structural + infrastructural levels (eg clean air filters in shared air spaces) it's all a bit alarming.
