1. I didn't intend to shame for getting older. We both know that's ridiculous. I'm older as is my wife and we're *not* spring chickens by any means.
2. But dressing that way at any age is just embarrassing to see. For a young woman it's for appreciative attention any man can understand. For an older woman it's for attention she wishes she could once command.
As for your friend ... yeah. Yeah.

It would be a very exciting time to work in the fundamental research side of the field. Yes there could/will be a bubble pop, but the technology and its applications overall are not going anywhere.
A retrenchment and another decade on figuring how to get an AGI running on the same 20 Watts a human brain does might be a good thing.
And there is nothing that say it *must* be a neural network-like structure. A fundamentally quantum based approach could revolutionize everything. Something biology is incapable of doing on its own (presumably - Sir Roger Penrose has ideas).

This is the same kind of argument guys who wrote assembler code for time and security critical embedded systems made against compilers back in the 1990's. I remember those exact discussions.
And they had valid points for that time. It didn't stop people from using compilers in appropriate situations. And it didn't stop compiler and language development to the point assembler is used only in relatively rare situations today. But it is still used and provide jobs. But it's been passed by for the most part in industry.
AI is just another abstraction layer that is being added that is good enough in enough situations that it's worthwhile. But the landscape is changing and will continue to change in the years and decades to come.

Yes. When tractors started to become popular there were still many circumstances of land access, field slope, soil saturation, etc., that made having a team of horses and expert plowmen around the far superior choice. And that lasted for a couple of decades. But it didn't change the inevitable.
My grandfather was one of those plowmen and he was winning plowing contests at local fairs well into his 70's. But he couldn't earn a living doing it any more.
There will always be old style programming as a hobby. But the field is facing a sea change today.

Yes. And I've found AI even in the state it's in now is a tremendous resource for exploring the research literature and textbooks, summarizing and explaining concepts as you drill down into the details, and writing computational and simulation code far more quickly and better documented than I would that works. Even working through heavy theoretical mathematical analysis to validate the computational results. It easily replaces two or three professional people I would have to hire to do the same work at a fraction of the cost.

This is an essential point from the book, *Who Moved My Cheese*.
I've been through this process a couple of times in my career (I'm old) and you see the same reactions from people play out over and over again.

Others take it as an opportunity to move on to some new and perhaps better.
AI has remade the work of working in computer science and algorithms more exciting than it's been for since forever. Colleagues of mine are over the moon with the potential advances that can be made now in research and applications. Hopefully it will last for a time. If not, though, so it goes.
But if your job was just implementing software and maintaining systems then, yeah, that field is pretty much cooked now.

I have young people starting out I give this bit of advice when they ask about working and jobs.
About 50% of workplaces are terrible. From soul sucking to outright abusive. About 40% are OK. You do the work and it pays your bills. About 10% are truly outstanding - good work and good management.
Stay only as long as you can in the first. Use it to get to the second one that will tide over until you find the third.
Just understand the third kind will inevitably, over years or decades, slide down to the second and finally into the first kind. Exceptions are extremley rare.
Never get attached to your workplace.

Soviets were doing research into chimera pathogens in the Biopriparat weapons program that used plague. After the Soviet Union fell Dr. Kanatjan Alibekov (Ken Alibek), the former deputy director of Biopreparat—revealed to Western intelligence that Soviet biochemists had actively mastered the creation of genetic "chimeras".
So encephalitis is spliced into the plague DNA. You catch plague and either die from it without treatment or are successfully treated for it with antibiotics. But when the plague bacteria are broken down this releases the encephalitis viral payload. And because it was delivered by the plague pathogen that had already spread deep through the host's systems, it is already behind the blood brain barrier and there is no defence.
So almost 100% fatality whether you are treated or not in the end. Nothing like it exists in nature.
But it *is* real and exists. There's literature on this and it was the basis of a book that came out just this year, Annie Jacobsen’s *Biological War: A Scenario* (2026).
Wait ... *and it was the basis of a book that came out just this year ...*

So cute and funny. They take up hardly any room at all. You can collect the goat milk and make homemade goat cheese to use, trade and sell.
----------------------------------------
Making goat cheese (also known as chèvre) at home is relatively easy, involving simple steps like heating milk, adding cultures and rennet, draining the curds, and flavoring with salt.
Here's a more detailed breakdown:
Ingredients:
You'll need fresh goat milk, a starter culture (often available as a liquid or powder), and rennet (a natural enzyme that coagulates milk).
Process:
Heat the milk: Gently heat the goat milk to a specific temperature (around 85-90°F or 29-32°C).
Add culture and rennet: Once the milk is heated, add the starter culture and rennet, stirring gently.
Let it set: Allow the milk to sit undisturbed for a period (usually 18-24 hours) to allow the curds to form.
Drain the curds: Once the curds are set, drain them in a cheesecloth-lined colander.
Salt and flavor: Add salt to the cheese and optionally flavor with herbs, garlic, or other ingredients.
Yield:
A gallon of milk typically yields about 1 3/4 pounds of goat cheese.
Very cool.

The superposition allows it to effectively try every possibility at once, exhaustive enumeration effectively, and it settles into a minimum energy/cost state that represents the best final solution.
That's hand wavy because there are details. But it has been used for routing optimization in practice.

You need a solid linear algebra background for this stuff. This textbook does a review but assumes you've already had it covered. There's no getting around it. There's a *lot* of math. And you have to have a physicist's or engineer's ability to connect the math to the physical world it's describing in an intuitive way. And that comes with years of education and work in the field.
Not trying to put you off. But it's a serious investment if you really want to understand the material.

I understand the basics. The thing with this entangled communication is that you still need a classical side channel - radio, laser, carrier pigeon if you like - to carry side information. This limits the speed to still speed of light. No faster than light laws are being broken here. And it's an integral part of the protocol. But you do get unbreakable encryption. And encryption that can be proven if it's tampered with. As I understand this.
This is probably the best text to get started provided you have something of a technical background.

And we don't even understand how the human mind works yet. We have no real understanding of consciousness or sentience.
We just copied an interesting structure that's found in the brain, the way neurons network with each other in the brain, stuck on a simple model of how they might interact and found at first interesting (letter recognition) and more and more surprising and possibly useful results.
But to call it thinking as an AI is a *huge* stretch - that sells!
This structure of networked neurons looks like it can power lower animals and their ability to move in the world, adapt to circumstances, find food, escape predators.
But we're a long way from human cognition as far as I can see.
We don't even know if it's this network structure is what leads to human level cognition. That could be a completely separate process we don't know about that's built *on top* of the existing network and took time to evolve.
Perhaps Pensrose's and others' idea of quantum mechanics being fundamentally involved in consciousness. We are just starting to understand quantum computing so maybe that will be the way forward.
Regardless, it still is an exciting field. Hype aside.

Late 70's in a small town surrounded by farmland and an hour to the nearest city. About a thousand White students and one civilized black. The teachers were smart and if you showed any spark they were happy to work with you. We had a (very) small math club where we taught ourselves more advanced algebra and calculus starting in grade 10. Two teachers supplied textbooks and would assist with questions and problems. One thing that made a difference is how students were streamed into lower, middle and advanced levels of courses starting in grade 10. We went to grade 13 back then.
