Based is a term people use to mean that someone is saying stuff they agree with, that reflects their worldview and ideology.
In this case, my pastor was preaching about how wielding power over others is not what Christians are called to, and that empire will crumble but God’s Kingdom is eternal.

I strained my hot honey that has been steeping for months and the marc had this gorgeous candied look, almost Christmasy. I added a little apple cider vinegar and blended it up with butter to make hot honey butter.

Is God incomprehensible? How much does it matter?
Christians believe that Jesus’ birth and life as a human being is (partly) God’s move towards us to make Himself more comprehensible — comprehensible enough for us to learn from and imitate, comprehensible enough for some of us to have seen and touched and been served and healed by.
We call Him the Word of God. We call the Bible that, too. I’d say that in a similar way, the Bible is also there to make God more comprehensible.
Ours is a God who loves us so much He moves towards us and even dwells inside us as the Holy Spirit. He may be incomprehensible in full, but still delights in being known and loved as we can.
The Bible talks a lot about how we should “know the Lord.” We can at least try!

Participants are welcome to read aloud from any English-language translation they choose. I tend to read from NASB 2020.
We started out reading the book of Luke, and are now reading the book of Acts. In general we’re reading to grow our understanding of who God is and what the scripture means. Reading for truth, basically.
Skeptics and believers in other religions are very welcome to join as long as their focus is also on trying in good faith to figure out what the Bible itself is actually saying and how the god of the Bible is being described.

Also, “Christ is King” is one of those things you hear so frequently they’ve lost some meaning. Fresh in its time, it was more clearly understood that if Christ is King, no one else can be.
This is why the establishment Jews that were in power at the time were killing Jesus’ contemporaries (Matthew 2:1-18) and trying to convince Rome that the Christian movement was a threat (John 19:12), and why the chant when Pilate offered Jesus’ release was “we have no king but Caesar” (John 19:15)
It’s true that the Christian movement recognized Jesus’ authority and that that is a threat to Roman authority, just not in the way it was being pitched. Usually that kind of thing goes along with a violent insurrection. But the kingdom of God was to grow in a different way, through service and love.

Personally, the foundation of my Christian Anarchism is recognizing that all people are images of God, and in Eden, we were given all the rest of creation to rule — but not each other. “Do not steal” and “do not murder” apply to everyone, and as the first is exactly what states must do to exist and the second is what they usually end up doing at some point (often to enforce the first), they’re not of God.
There’s a lot more to be said about this and I hope you fall down the rabbit hole!

Hi! I host a Bible study each week on Cornychat. It’s every Tuesday at 8 pm New York time (we just wrapped up after starting about an hour ago).
Attendance and participation had been steadily growing and thriving, but for the past several meetings, it’s been quite low. In contrast with this, many people seem to value that I do this, reposting and liking my updates I send out with #nostrbiblestudy
Would a different time or something work better for the people who like the idea of this but aren’t usually joining?

Sin isn’t gender-specific.
And neither is calling.
So if we’re going to make this about gender, then let’s be consistent—
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝘄𝗲 𝗱𝗼 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐥, 𝐚𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐢𝐧?
Not to mention the long line of men in Scripture who failed, fell, or flat-out rebelled:
𝗛𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗲𝘂𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘁𝘂𝘀: “Their teaching will spread like gangrene” (2 Tim. 2:17).
𝗛𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗲𝘂𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿: “Whom I have handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme” (1 Tim. 1:20).
𝗣𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿 (𝗖𝗲𝗽𝗵𝗮𝘀): “The other Jews joined him in his hypocrisy, so that by their hypocrisy even Barnabas was led astray” (Gal. 2:13).
𝟭 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝟱:𝟭: “It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that even pagans do not tolerate: A man is sleeping with his father’s wife.”
𝗝𝘂𝗱𝗮𝘀 𝗜𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘁: Personally chosen by Jesus—yet he betrayed Him (Luke 22:3–6).
𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗮𝘂𝗹: Anointed by God, later rejected for disobedience (1 Sam. 15).
𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗱: A man after God’s own heart—who committed adultery and murder (2 Sam. 11).
𝗔𝗮𝗿𝗼𝗻: First high priest, but led Israel into idolatry by making the golden calf (Ex. 32:1–6).
𝗦𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗺𝗼𝗻: The wisest man alive, yet turned to idolatry (1 Kings 11:4–11).
𝗘𝗹𝗶’𝘀 𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 (𝗛𝗼𝗽𝗵𝗻𝗶 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘀): Priests who stole sacrifices and slept with women at the entrance to the tent of meeting (1 Sam. 2:12–25).
𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗮𝘀: Lied to the Holy Spirit and died under judgment (Acts 5:1–5).
𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗮𝘀: Abandoned Paul because he “loved this present world” (2 Tim. 4:10).
Let’s be honest: the issue isn’t that women are more prone to deception, sin, immorality, or that they were divinely designed to live under male authority.
The real issue is 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘸𝘦 𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘸 𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘤𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳—𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘸𝘦 𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵.
We have a real problem with labeling control and power as holiness and obedience.
So, if we’re going to weaponize Scripture against women,
let’s be just as rigorous with men—
but then we'd have no one left standing.

We could repent for how we’ve mishandled God’s commission.
We could honor the 𝑤ℎ𝑜𝑙𝑒 Body of Christ—male and female.
We could submit to the Spirit who anoints whoever He chooses.

I’m a Protestant; my perspective is people are saved by repenting of sins they’ve committed, choosing to turn away from future sins, and pursuing a right relationship with God — matters of the heart, which the ritual of baptism demonstrates to the community.
Like you can be legally and factually married without having a wedding with friends and family invited, but having a wedding demonstrates your marriage to the community so they can both celebrate and hold you accountable.
The common Protestant view which I share is not that people are born with sins already committed that need cleansing, but that they’re born with a tendency to sin that will certainly show itself.
I’d love to talk about this with you more; maybe next time we meet up in person would be better!

A short time ago, a friendly acquaintance posted something moving and troubling on facebook that has really stuck in my mind.
As part of working through some stuff, she wrote out a memory of an experience from when she was a teenager, living with her boyfriend and his mother, who were both physically abusive to her. She had started going to a church down the road and was connecting with the pastor and his family.
One day, the boyfriend’s mother brought home a 40+ year old man and told my friend that she’d made a deal with him, that my friend needed to go with him and have sex with him.
At the moment she was supposed to get in his truck, my friend ran. Betrayed, terrified, checking behind her as she ran, she headed to the church, where she knew she would be safe. No one was there, so she went to the pastor’s house nearby. He was home, and she told him what had just happened.
He said that his wife and kids wouldn’t be home until evening, so while he wished he could help her, it wouldn’t be appropriate for him to be alone with a woman who wasn’t his wife. He talked about the “Billy Graham Rule” and avoiding the appearance of evil. He didn’t even call the police or anyone else to help her.
This pastor, in “avoiding the appearance of evil,” much more neatly avoided the substance of righteousness. The priest and the Levite preceding the Good Samaritan come to mind.
Brothers and sisters, don't be like this guy. Don’t raise your kids to be like this guy.
