2025-01-26 19:07:51 UTC

- reply

It’s a complex question that I resent people think can easily or sensitively discussed on forums like this because of the extremely nuanced nature of not only the conversation, content and deep historical knowledge needed to discuss such things; but also the very real bigotry and hate that is directed in both directions for either trying to question, or accepting the historical narrative. It’s rather infuriating as it is a needed conversation that seems nearly impossible because of how much it has loaded itself and the aggressive nature in which questioning isn’t presented as sincere questioning, similar to how defending the narrative doesn’t seem to have legitimacy beyond its own defense. So frankly I can’t really comment on any of it without opening a can of worms that needs a 5 hour podcast format just to get the preliminary view to understanding the very nature of the question itself.

It’s quite sad really.

2025-01-25 23:43:12 UTC

Having worked at and invested in number of ‘bitcoin’ companies, the great problem you will always deal with is fiat people, fiat policies, and fiat politics. While this isn’t a problem when the company is small, it becomes more acute with growth for various reasons until it pretty much becomes unbearable. Then it becomes a fiat company that just happens to do bitcoin stuff, and usually sacrifices the real ethos and values that started the company in the first place.
The only real solution is to build totally bitcoin-only (as in no touching fiat) ‘companies’—which there are very few, and as it becomes more successful, the harder it is to keep it that way.
The good news is that soon there will be more of these ‘companies’ if we can really call them that. Over the next epoch, these will provide some of the greatest opportunities (and risks) to build extraordinary new products and services for the whole world and will truly be ‘bitcoin-only’ services that will likely be real pieces of infrastructure of the future internet. These will also provide the greatest investment opportunities ever, as they will be ‘forever’ and ‘everywhere’ companies.

Yeah I don’t really dig contemporary anarchist, as the ideology is all messed up imho.
I have not read these in a while, but Rudolf Rocker, Peter kropotkin, and Pierre-Joseph Proudhon all influenced my thoughts on this division between anarchism and communism.

2025-01-24 17:27:53 UTC

- reply

The division between young Marx thought (alienation) and older (materialism) both have important distinctions as well.
Imho anarchism recognizes many of the criticisms of capitalism, but addresses them in a way that doesn’t lead to insanity or totalitarianism. This is why anarchism was such a failure of political theory in the 20th century it just didn’t have the tools to actualize itself. However we do now have those tools, just very few recognize their political nature.

2025-01-24 16:52:35 UTC

- reply

Jeez, this is like a really really big question that demands like 200 pages of historic context to really get into and parse out. Marxism today is a highly mutilated version of its own assertions starting as early as the communist manifesto, as Marxism was originally an application of scientific socialism; a theory that came long before Marx. Today we have some form of Stalinist-Maoist ideologies divorced from the classic ideas that were first put forward as scientific socialism.
As to the second question, I think it’s obvious that the consolidation of capitalism into the hands of a few and their relationship to the state and regulatory regime has been hugely damaging to humanity on a whole and that needs to be checked in someway.
This is where and why I side with anarchism, which was allied with the socialist up until the second international where Bakunin broke with Marx over the use of the state to create a communist society.

I’ve always liked him and his blog was one of the only resources on bitcoin I could find back in like 2013. I’d say he’s part of the libertarian contingency of bitcoiners that are open to other ‘crypto’ options and tools—which are important, but also districtly separate from what bitcoin is.

2025-01-21 01:52:52 UTC

Are we in an echo chamber, or does ‘crypto’ really not have anything to offer substantially in terms of culture, values, ethos, and really presentation of a greater vision on a whole?
Maybe this is more of a xitter kind of question (as nostr really is a bitcoin echo chamber), but all of the web3 BS seems like just that. It all seems so flaccid and disingenuous. The lack of charisma around crypto vs bitcoiners just seems really stark to me, but then again, maybe I am just stuck in this echo chamber.

I’ve had a real chip on my shoulder lately and been feeling pissed off about a lot of things (personally and otherwise).
And even in that, I thank God every day for bitcoin. Like, fuck the money part, I just am so grateful that there is something they cannot control, they cannot kill, they cannot stop. That even as captured, as played, and as controlled all of the dialog around it is; they cannot have my bitcoin, and they cannot stop me from transacting with whom I choose and they cannot break cryptography from the very functions that are its nature.
The crypto sycophant shit is disgusting and vile; and it’s also an essential component of Bitcoin’s development. Nothing provides a better smoke screen for how important bitcoin is than the crypto bros and their active destruction the entire financial system with their debased garbage, outright scams, and criminal conduct. When the smoke clears, and all of that garbage shows itself for just what it is; bitcoin will still be plugging along, block by block, bit by bit.
And even more, Bitcoin gives me a reason to have hope. Hope that even with as fucked up as everything is, no one can’t make more bitcoin, no one can stop the network, and no one will control it. That hope is the smallest of light in a world of utter darkness; and yet it is in the darkest of nights that such a light can shine the brightest.
