I always thought it was to keep out the inevitable corruption that happens to anything the state controls. We should separate religion from state for the same reason press, education, healthcare, money, etc. should be separate: because politics is poison. Government always weaponizes any institution it controls against the people, which they did with religion as you point out. I agree that "religion" meant Christianity to almost everyone involved in the with founding the US.

In what sense did Bitcoin survive? It's now an inscription/ordinal spam dumpste with zero chance of separating money and state. The protocol wasn't conservative when it needed to be, but it was when it came time to course correct. That's a guaranteed path to failure.

The only possible hope for shitcore now is that this episode results in sufficient ossification that the op_return change is the last. I could see anything remotely controversial getting massive push-back in the near future, probably for the next several years. But with Wall Street, big miners, and core united against plebs, resolve will weaken overtime, just like we've seen it weaken over the last 10 years but faster. Bitcoin is like a city under siege and the enemy just dealt a major blow to the defenses, and breached the outer walls. Some defenders still think the city can be saved but It's just a matter of time now. The barbarians are at the gate.

Can't speak for mechanic of course but for me, the lack of URSF signal is more about honesty and complacency: plebs honestly taking a stand instead of complacently deferring to a few big mining pools. Accepting your hypothetical doesn't change my conclusion from all this. If there had been a URSF with 80% support the only thing that changes is having more respect for the pleb node runner community who actually took a stand instead of deferring to mining pools. But I'd still see a split from core as needed and welcome, as I personally am not interested in some Ethereum 2.0 abomination overflowing with inscriptions, ordinals, and whatever other nonsense core has in mind, no matter how many plebs support it. The reality is there was zero real opposition to bip-110 in the form of URSF, and we are left to interpret this the best we can.
