What's wrong with firewall punching? I don't see how Tailscale (in combination with Headscale) for example isn't the perfect way to connect to a trusted node? 🤔

I heavily disagree here. The correct way forward is to increase privacy with clients connecting to a potential malicious node and reducing the potential impact the bad node could have.
Making connecting to a node harder isn't a great way to adoption.
Have sane defaults for normies and the potential for pros to perfect their privacy needs.

It should NOT!
I'm connecting to my own node via a direct vpn connection. I really don't understand why I should slow down my connection to my node using Tor/I2P.
Also for friends and family that can also connect to my node via VPN it's the same logic.
I do not understand why anyone would connect to his own node via TOR/I2P.
For use with an unknown remote node, yes then I understand it.

I had the same thought, but then I discovered Headscale. It allows you to host the central control server of your tailnet yourself.
I'm now running the Headscale server for some time now and really can't complain!

Sounds weird that a FOSS project uses primarily proprietary garbage like discord for communication and also recommends a proprietary client/app as the default.
I mean I haven't looked much into meshcore but reading your thoughts about it alone increases my blood pressure.
Btw thank you for sharing your thoughts and insights regularly on here, as this Lora stuff etc was something I wanted to look into for a long time and now I'm getting good information just passively 🙏

First off, those are MULTIPLE links to different services that publish their payment numbers (your answer seemed like you only read one).
Second I only quickly checked ShopinBit's officially reported numbers and there peak was ~$1.7M in 2024 for ShopinBit and ~$1.1M for ShopinBit EU.
So yes, obviously this is a very limited dataset. Not a lot of corporations are publishing their krypto sales data sadly and probably none of those does like $100M+ revenue a year but it nevertheless shows that Monero gets definitely used outside of darknet markets on normal everyday/legal stuff.

I don't think I can currently check/verify how Blackrock's money flows (or the government's etc).
And in Monero you CAN proof that you did a TX and you CAN give other people a viewkey to a wallet, so that they can verify what money flows into a wallet.
With BTC you have no choice but to be completely transparent. The slightest error and all of your privacy efforts get erased.

You know you could just research that yourself... But now that you asked me so nicely...
Currently the sender privacy in Monero works like this: Everytime you want to send a TX your wallet picks 15 (mostly) random TX from the blockchain and signs it so that your TX looks like anyone from the 16 people (you plus the 15 decoys) could have sent this TX. This gives pretty good privacy but these so called ring signatures can be attacked in a few ways so that you could theoretically reduce the ring size to about 4 (instead of 16).
Now with the upcoming FCMP++ upgrade every transaction will look like it could've been sent by everyone on the chain. That means instead of potential 16 senders you now have 150million+ possible senders.
Other improvements that come with FCMP++ (the full name btw comes from Full-Chain Membership Proofs + Spend Authorization + Linkability) are for example that you can now sign TX that depend on a TX that has not yet been published, allowing more L2s to work with Monero aka Transaction Chaining.
Also this upgrade will bring Carrot (Cryptonote Address on Rerandomizable-RingCT-Output Transactions) giving us better view keys, Migitation of a few attacks that are possible with current addresses (were an attacker can gain some insight about the ownership of certain addresses) and some more.

As with all other self-hosted software, if you want to be self-sovereign you need to keep somewhat up-to-date and update your tech every once in a while.
There are thousands of nodes and god knows how many miners, so it seems like there are enough people out there that manage to do that.
Also if you're running a node it tells you when there is a new version available. At least I'm pretty sure I saw that note in the logs of my node.
The notion that everyone needs to run a node is just BS. The capable people should do it and should run infrastructure for their friends/family/community. Trust in small circles is normal and healthy and it's enough if one of them does it.

I don't really want to disturb our Monero echo chamber here, but claiming Monero is currently IMPOSSIBLE to track is just plain misleading.
After we have the FCMP++ upgrade, okay maybe one can claim this. But even then meta data from outside the chain can still lead to some tracking.
So please, don't claim something that's not true. Monero has so many arguments for it, we don't need to advertise for it with disengenious claims.

A little shoutout from Peter Todd towards the Monerocommunity (kind of).
I think he talks about a very important topic, but when you look into the comments he gets hated on by basically everyone for heresy of not hardcapping BTC.
I really have to say that I very much appreciate that in the Monerocommunity we can discuss even sensitive topics openly, because we aren't in it for the name of Monero, but because we're freedom-/digital-cash-/self-sovereignity-maxis. And we know that either one of us can be wrong sometimes and only with a good discussion culture (and dedicated, hard work) we can achieve something greater than either one of us could achieve on it's own.

You are aware that if they manage to funnel most of the hash power into a few regulated businesses, this businesses get regulated to censor all transactions are unwanted. And if at some point self-custody gets basically outlawed and those miners are only allowed to mine blocks with white-listed coins, then this 'Institutional crap' DOES affect the base layer.
Oh and if the miners only mine blocks onto a clean chain, then people with non-kyced coins are fucked.
For this to work they only need to regulate a bit over 50% of hashing power, which basically is already were we're at (we just not have those strict rules, yet).

For me personally Bitcoin is the black pill and Monero is the white pill.
When I look at Bitcoin, I see an ambitious project that started with its heart in the right place. But over the years it got captured and corrupted.
Then there is the little sibling of Bitcoin named Monero. It saw what happened to the older one and tried to learn from its mistakes. And so far it seems to me, that it got most stuff mostly right. There were a few lessons learned on the way, but overall Monero gives me hope. Hope that we can fight back against the giant machinery that tries to crush us all. Hope that all that it takes is a few courageous rebels, that uphold their ambitious values and fight for them.

Corrupting Monero isn't the same as attacking it.
The group that did the selfish-mining-attack, were NOT able to have a sustained 51% attack. There is a paper that has all the data about that incident: https://arxiv.org/pdf/2512.01437
That the attacker abused an inflation bug is complete nonsense. The only inflation bug that was found was many years ago, got fixed immediately and the research trying to check for an actual usage of that inflation bug found basically nothing. https://www.moneroinflation.com/
I don't want to speculate why you're spreading this level of FUD, but maybe do some actual research next time.
Also all Monero devs that have more rights have build trust with the community over years. Ontop of that every major/important code change gets audited from third parties before it gets deployed to mainnet.
