Yep. Cantillion effect at its finest. The problem is that tariffs don't work to protect local business if you are the fiat reserve currency. There is a reason why early America used them and post-fiat America stopped doing so.
If you are the reserve currency, you WANT the world to have your money to buffer the value of your currency. No one wants or will spend what they cannot have. That's the reason the bureaucracy is addicted to throwing US money to every ridiculous cause you can think of across the world. It doesn't matter if the cause is gender studies in Pakistan, the point is to give Pakistan USD so that they have some to spend on oil, thereby helping buffer the value of that USD.
That's the point that trump is either unable to understand or selecting to ignore.
