Also, basically wasted an entire work day over this - since it's my work phone, my boss is OK with it & even sent me home to deal with it, but once again, imagine the world we would live in if we could hold tech companies responsible for the costs incurred by their shoddy / shady practices...

BTW since computer things don't actively delete their memory unless asked to do so, I'm pretty sure all my stuff is still in there somewhere - a theory only strenghtened by my colleague telling me that Apple once told her that they could run recovery on an iPhone, if she would just kindly pay them nearly 1000€ regardless if they recovered anything or not...
If you look at it soberly, this is basically a ransomware attack carried out by Apple.
