Lightning strikes from these dry-ish storms start new blazes constantly. it did rain a bit, but with everything this dry it's not enough to put out a fire. Photo 2: you can (just barely) see the glacier capped cone of Mt Baker away to the North. The layer of brown murk surrounding it is the pall of smoke from various fires.
