I infer from my other knowledge about waves in general that the closer you are to the cause of the surge the faster the rise and fall of the surge voltage and current. The farther you are the more the resistance and impedance of the conductors along the path causes it to be a lower peak longer duration wave.
Kinda crazy how known lightning storms with blown electronics can trip breakers in one place but not another. Different dirt and rock properties? That is definitely into the realm where I am smart enough to know that I couldn't even begin to model all the relevant variables at that level.
My type 1 goes right on the rails of my panel, no breaker. It just snaps into place taking up 2 breaker slots. I wonder if adding one would reduce other breaker trips for you? My type 2 is on a 30a double pole breaker with the shortest leads I could manage to the breaker. I wonder if the breaker it is on would trip for you?
