Home loads are relatively low impedance devices, suppression devices become as close to 0 as possible. 100kv DC across low relative impedance is thousands of amps for a very brief period. Do devices ever see that, im not sure.
If the transient lasts long enough, id have to imagine the average lightning strike is a ~100ms or so? I've never studied this however.
