when i used to drink my rule was i only drink while clubbing on weekends
in other words only drink with the goal of lowering my inhibitions so i can approach girls - never to just feel better or to have a good time with my buddies
this rule can work OK in the short term ( like in college ) but in the long term this is still too much drinking
you can't sustain college lifestyle into middle age - you will completely destroy yourself
i don't currently drink but if i had to come up with a rule for how an adult could manage alcohol intake to keep it from completely destroying your body and your life i think it would be to only drink on weekends and ONLY when you're NOT in your home town area.
so for example i live in Central Florida. so based on this rule i would not be allowed to drink in Central Florida. but if i went to Miami ( South Florida ) or Las Vegas or NYC etc. i would be allowed to drink.
the goal of such rules is to prevent drinking from becoming a habit, and to use drugs and alcohol only to heighten OTHER experiences - never as an end in itself.
alcohol can be useful for lowering inhibitions when approaching women and marijuana and drugs can be useful for enjoying music or film and all these substances can be used when such a clear purpose for taking them exists. however you should never take ANY drug or alcohol or even marijuana without such a clear purpose or some kind of a rule to limit consumption.
it's like sweets. junk food is OK if you count calories. but you can't just eat junk whenever you feel like. you can either eat clean without counting calories or you can eat junk and track all your macros and nutrients. but you can't eat junk and sweets without accountability.
