I think they are taking the average acceleration between two average velocities
Each of the average velocities are for a specific spatial region where the change in distance is equal but the change in time is not necessarily equal
I think you might normally you want an equal change in time between when each of the two average velocities is calculated to get average acceleration when using the finite range of change methodology in calculus
