Phobos, la plus interne et la plus grande des deux lunes de Mars, a été découvert télescopiquement, avec sa lune compagne Déimos, par l’astronome américain Asaph Hall en 1877. Phobos est un petit corps rocheux irrégulier, dont la surface est criblée de cratères et parcourue de rainures. Hall donna aux deux lunes les noms de Phobos, personnification de la panique, et de son frère jumeau Déimos, personnification de l’effroi dans la mythologie grecque. Ils étaient les fils d’Arès, le dieu grec de la guerre et l’équivalent du dieu romain Mars, et d’Aphrodite, la déesse grecque de l’amour.
Phobos est un ellipsoïde irrégulier, une forme aplatie semblable à un œuf, dont la longueur, la largeur et la hauteur sont différentes, et mesure environ 26 km dans sa plus grande dimension. Il effectue une révolution autour de Mars toutes les 7 heures et 39 minutes, à une distance moyenne exceptionnellement faible de 9 378 km, ce qui en fait le satellite naturel le plus proche de sa planète dans le Système solaire. Son orbite est presque circulaire et n’est inclinée que de 1° par rapport au plan équatorial de la planète. Le satellite orbite autour de Mars plus rapidement que Mars ne tourne sur elle-même, une rotation martienne durant 24 heures et 37 minutes. Ainsi, depuis un point d’observation situé à la surface de la planète, Phobos semble se déplacer d’ouest en est. Le grand axe de Phobos pointe constamment vers Mars. Comme la Lune de la Terre, sa période de rotation est égale à sa période orbitale et il présente donc toujours la même face à la planète.
La surface de Phobos, fortement cratérisée, est recouverte d’un régolithe gris très sombre, constitué de débris rocheux non consolidés, qui ne réfléchit qu’environ 6 % de la lumière qui l’atteint, soit environ la moitié de celle réfléchie par la surface de la Lune. Ce fait, ainsi que la faible densité moyenne du satellite, 1,9 gramme par cm³, sont compatibles avec la composition des météorites chondritiques carbonées, ce qui laisse penser que Phobos pourrait être un objet de type astéroïdal capturé. De remarquables rainures linéaires, généralement larges de 100 mètres et profondes de 20 mètres, couvrent une grande partie de la surface. De solides indices montrent qu’elles sont liées à la formation du plus grand cratère de Phobos. Cette structure, connue sous le nom de Stickney, mesure environ 10 km de diamètre. Des observations précises de la position de Phobos au cours du siècle dernier suggèrent que les forces de marée exercées par Mars attirent lentement le satellite vers la planète. Si tel est le cas, il entrera en collision avec Mars dans un avenir extrêmement lointain.
