Wins Above Replacement (WAR) is a statistic borrowed from sports analytics, originally baseball. ⚾
The basic idea is:
How many more wins did this person contribute compared to an average replacement?
In baseball, a player with 5 WAR is estimated to have helped his team win about 5 more games than a readily available replacement player would have.
How does that apply to generals? 💂
🪖 Replacement General = a competent but ordinary commander.
⚔️ WAR = how many additional victories or successful outcomes a commander achieved compared to what an average commander might have accomplished with similar armies, resources, and circumstances.
So when the chart gives:
Napoleon ≈ 16.7 WAR
Wellington ≈ 7 WAR
Ney ≈ 2–3 WAR
it is essentially arguing that:
Napoleon produced far more battlefield success than an average commander would have in the same situations.
Wellington also significantly outperformed expectations.
Marshal Ney still added value above an ordinary commander, but not on the same scale as the very top tier.

On 3 August 1492 three ships dropped down the Rio Tinto and over the bar of Saltés: the Santa María, the Pinta and the Niña, with about ninety men. A month in the Canaries to mend the Pinta's rudder, then west from Hierro into an ocean nobody had crossed.
Thirty-three days. Weed thick enough to fear grounding in, a compass needle that would not sit on the Pole Star, and a crew who on 10 October demanded to turn back. Columbus asked for three days more. On the third, two hours after midnight, the Pinta's lookout saw a low white shore.
They worked south through the Bahamas to Cuba, which Columbus took for the mainland of Asia, and on to Hispaniola. On Christmas night the Santa María set fast on a reef. Her timbers became a fort, thirty-nine men stayed in it, and the Niña came home in a February storm by way of the Azores and Lisbon.

Zheng He was a Muslim from Yunnan, captured as a boy by the Ming armies and made a eunuch in the household of the prince who became the Yongle Emperor. On 11 July 1405 that emperor sent him into the Western Ocean: 317 ships and 27,800 men went down the Yangtze from Nanjing that autumn — the largest fleet the world had yet seen, and larger than anything Europe would put to sea for 300 years.
They took the north-east monsoon to Champa, then Java, where a Majapahit civil war killed 170 of the fleet's men who happened to be ashore. Then Palembang, Malacca, Sumatra, Ceylon, and the pepper ports of the Malabar coast, ending at Calicut.
Coming home, the fleet stopped at Palembang, where a Chinese pirate named Chen Zuyi offered his surrender and prepared to attack it at anchor. He was expected. 5,000 of his men were killed, 10 ships burned, and Chen Zuyi taken alive and beheaded in Nanjing.
