Great question, it's a hard problem.
My strategy for this is:
Bootstrap with nostr and bitcoin plebs, they're at the cutting edge and understand and value the spirit we're building in.
Make it work fantastic for AI agents, because you don't need human friends in the app when you have 100 agents to talk to.
Get it in the hands of journalists and activists who need unstoppable secure messaging.
That's as far as my plan goes as of now, but that's already getting us to 100k+ users hopefully. From there on out it's easier to grow.
We only show these requests when a relay in your list is broken. If you have broken relays in your list then that slows down every client of every user who's viewing your posts. That's why a radical solution is adequate. We definitely have to work on these checks and fixes, they can be further improved.
It looks like you have bad relays in your list. Check and remove those that are not online at the moment. We should automatocally fix this in white noise.
The biggest pro@npub1whtn0s68y3cs98zysa4nxrfzss5g5snhndv35tk5m2sudsr7ltms48r3ec right now is inefficient processing of the group state and inefficient relay connections.
You can think of white noise like the equivalent of a Bitcoin full note versus a bank account. Apps like Signal have the benefit of a central server that can offload a whole bunch of processing and therefore make it much more efficient on the client application.
White noise is a local first convergence machine. So it has to do a whole bunch of processing to keep in sync with the group. This gets especially tricky when the app is closed or offline and has to catch up.
Currently it's designed so that it is very unlikely to fork the consensus, but at a huge computational cost.
What we're working on now is to massively improve the performance of our convergence state machine, and to also make our relay connections a whole lot smarter. This is a big undertaking and it will take us about a week of back end library development but expect a lot performance improvements and battery optimizations in the coming weeks.
I'll look into it, we're using roborazzi atm.

Quick update on @nprofile…radp scaling.
It seems the current limit is ~ 50 members in a group. Inviting additional members fails to deliver invite welcome messages to the new user.
So best keep your groups under this size for now.
We didn't focus on scaling at all so far.
Step 1 was to make it work.
Now comes a lot of performance improvements, which should also help with scaling.
I'd love to reach at least 10k members in a group, in theory we can do even more, but thats hard engineering ahead.

Trade offs all the way down, the app is much simpler because we abandoned the old stack.
We dont plan to break user space again tho, so from now on it should migrate properly.
Your follows will be migrated (regular nostr)
But even with your nsec the client can't find out what people you talked to in the old app, (that's the whole point) so you'll just have to start fresh chats with those.
We decided to not do that, too much work to get migration to work, and almost nobody used the old app cause it just didnt work.

You have a really old key package, can you go to developer settings, key packages, and then republish?
There's migration logic in the new client, so it should just work automagically.

The previous app just didn't work for groups.
It was super common to fork a group, so different members see different messages in the group.
The old spec was by far not rigorous enough.
I haven't seen a fork in a couple weeks now, it's still slow to catch up sometimes, but that's easy to fix.

Honestly, agent comms are the most reliable in White Noise, and its instant useful even if none of your friends are on White Noise.
