Hi, I happened to see your post and thought I would jump in. I’ve been on nostr for a couple years and have made several friends here who I have met in “real life” as well. Nostr is very unlike other social networking experiences because there are so many facets to it.
I joined in order to have a place to show my artwork and interest in watches. There are many people here that are selling various foods, artwork, and various handmade stuff, for bitcoin. I would compare nostr to a worldwide craft fair.
There are many people here that love technology as well, and are happy to help you find your way around, setting up relays, helping you to find other clients (ways to access nostr), etc.

so, it was a quite critical step, defining the proper architecture for the relay. the orly port itself has to have it correct, and the web app has one internally that differs in two key points - there is only one client for the relay-proxy in the client, the page app, which asks for event data to render. and the database, which uses indexeddb in the browser, different to the pogreb-based database engine i replaced badger with (pogreb is specifically designed for data with a high read, low write rate, and fits perfectly with immutable, atomic events such as nostr events).
the neat thing is that this means that the bulk of the relay code actually then gets shared across both the front and back end of the smesh/orly suite. this is unique. you can't do this with most dev stacks, because you can't do servers with the same code as the client. with moxie, you can. this means that every bug found in either of the implementations the fixes propagate across between them. no duplication of work. it's more efficient this way too, as well as having a uniform set of principles you adhere to for all applications.
the absolute best thing about moxie though - is you can even scale to parallel distributed processing. the database engine can be swapped out with a distributed database cluster. the client listener side can be handled with a cluster on round robin DNS. the policy processing can be an independent server.
with moxie, everything is built like it's a distributed system, so making it actually distributed, is trivial, and requires only changes at the edges between the parts.
