Yup. But I think that much of what was known was correct, though the "how" was not exactly possible without some additional technology.
kidna cool that these guys could tell that lead is actually "almost" gold just because it weights a lot.
now we have a powerplants making gold from lead.

long story short in 16th century our emperor (rudolf II) was really into science and financed things like this guy making gold from lead by breaking its atoms. with a hammer
