Think about who gets to lock the front door of a building.
One building hands the keys to whoever owns the most square footage inside. The more you own, the more say you get about the locks. The other building hands the keys to whoever shows up with their own truck, their own fuel, and walks the rounds every night. You can buy a truck. You cannot vote yourself one.
Some background first. Every open money network needs a way to agree on what happened, and that agreement has to be expensive to fake. One approach is called proof of stake, where the people holding the most coins get the most say in what gets recorded. Another is called proof of work, where the say goes to whoever burns the most electricity running computers that grind at a puzzle. Bitcoin uses the second one.
My claim is narrow. Proof of work is protected because its cost comes from outside the system. A power bill is owed to a utility that does not care about the coin. A miner who wants more influence goes and buys machines somebody else built, running on power somebody else generated. Under proof of stake the cost of influence is paid in the same asset the system issues, so whoever already holds the most can keep paying to hold the most, and that loop never has to touch the outside world.
The strongest argument against me is a fair one. Electricity is expensive, and that expense lands on everyone using the network. Proof of stake runs for a tiny fraction of the cost, and cheap security that holds is still security. People I respect make that case well and they may turn out to be right.
What would show me wrong is this. A proof of stake network survives a funded, serious attempt by its own largest holders to rewrite its record, and the attempt fails for some reason other than everyone agreeing to be nice about it. I have not watched that test run yet.
So for Bitcoin I keep an eye on the power bill rather than the price. A power bill cannot be voted away.
