We were promised flying cars.
We got subscription-based heated seats.
We were promised AI that would eliminate boring work.
We got AI writing emails explaining why we need to attend another meeting.
We were promised decentralisation.
We got 14 different apps asking us to prove we are human.
We were promised the paperless office.
We now have PDFs of scanned printouts of emails attached to other PDFs.
We were promised infinite connectivity.
And somehow the Wi-Fi still stops working when someone microwaves lunch.
We were promised smart cities.
The bin now has Bluetooth.
We were promised autonomous vehicles.
Meanwhile humans still can't merge onto a motorway without forming a spontaneous geopolitical crisis.
We were promised abundance through technology.
Then someone invented surge pricing for electricity.
And the grand finale:
Humanity built machines capable of generating Shakespeare, writing software and explaining quantum mechanics...
...and immediately asked them to make a PowerPoint presentation about "synergy."
Perhaps the strangest thing about the 21st century isn't that technology became absurd.
It's that we somehow convinced ourselves that all of this was the obvious future.
