Harvard's Own Dean Says Grading Has Stopped Working
Twenty years ago, a quarter of Harvard's undergraduate grades were A's. By 2010, it was a third. In 2024–25, it was 60%, and the median grade has been an A since 2016–17. Harvard's Dean of Undergraduate Education, Amanda Claybaugh, wrote that grading "no longer performs its primary functions and is undermining our academic mission."
Every Grade Is a Price
A grade carries information. It tells an employer, a graduate school and you yourself how good the work was. Like a price, it only works when it can say different things about different work.
Print Too Much of a Currency, and Each Unit Buys Less
Milton Friedman showed that inflation is always and everywhere a monetary phenomenon. Grade inflation follows the same law. When most of the class gets an A, an A stops telling anyone anything.
Every Printing Press Has a Beneficiary
Claybaugh's report names the incentives. Instructors feared tougher grades would hurt the student evaluations that shape their careers. Students pressed hard for higher marks, and a decade of official calls for leniency did the rest. Each extra A was cheap to issue today and expensive for everyone holding one tomorrow.
Both Sides Settled Into a Quiet Deal
Sociologist Christopher Winship calls it the low-low contract. The leaders of Harvard's Intellectual Vitality Initiative put it plainly: "faculty maintain low expectations for students' effort, while students expect little of their professors in return."
The Students Who Worked Hardest Paid the Most
Inflation punishes savers. Grade inflation punishes earners. One Harvard professor admitted an A now covers anything from outstanding work to merely satisfactory work. When the best essay and an adequate one earn the same mark, the best essay loses its value.
Distorted Prices Produce Malinvestment
Bad signals push people into bad decisions. The Crimson's own editors admitted students avoid courses they want to take because a single A-minus could sink a job or grad school application. The currency is so debased that one small dip looks like a default.
Then Harvard Stopped the Printing Press
After the report, faculty were urged to restore rigor. The share of flat A's fell from 60.2% in 2024–25 to 53.4% in fall 2025. In May 2026, the faculty voted 458 to 201 to cap A's at 20% of each course, with up to four extra A's to cushion small classes, starting in fall 2027.
Your A Should Mean Something
Easy A's feel generous, but they quietly devalue what you earn, the same way printed money devalues what you save. Whether a fixed cap is the right fix is still being argued at Harvard. A university that grades honestly gives your work its value back.
