I feel the pain. I spent last night erasing and rebuilding a server I own that runs a public-facing web service. Because I let things go way past EOL, and honestly a server rebuild was easier and cleaner than 2 successive OS upgrades. (The OS was still "in support" though.)

And then I had to spend a few hours finishing a job I started earlier, making the web service work properly with ancient "lol already abandoned when I imported it" code, and PHP 8.5.

I prevailed though!

in my opinion, everyone with a phone should have an OpenStreetMap viewer (OSMAnd) and locally cached maps, and everyone should have a browser for unplanned looking up of information while you're out.

The benefit of having those tools and an Internet connection is huge. You just need the discipline or self-imposed parental locks to stop yourself from doing unproductive things on the Internet.

You have to look at it in terms of what you actually want.

Do you want to be locked out of using a browser or installing Instagram? Buy a cheaper refurbished old phone and 1) set parental locks on the browser (an extra step for you) or remove it. 2) DON'T install apps that are bad for you.

Have a "random number" widget on your phone. Copy random number. Go to FastMail Settings → Aliases. Add new: "user-$n@$domain", with a private label naming the retail vendor.

Takes only a few seconds.

And have a filter that sorts "to:user-*@$domain" into "retail" folder.
