The Tower in Your Head
Foucault's prison is becoming real — not because we're watched, but because we've started guarding ourselves. When reasoning and deciding get this hard, the only question left is: where is the anchor, and which way is a free life?
In the eighteenth century, the philosopher Jeremy Bentham designed a perfect prison. A tower in the center, cells arranged in a ring around it, each one lit so the prisoner inside is always visible from the tower — but the tower's windows are dark, so the prisoner can never tell whether anyone is actually watching.
Two hundred years later, Michel Foucault saw what that design really was, and made it the model of modern power. Here is the part almost everyone misses, and it's the whole thing: the watching does not have to happen. It only has to be possible. The prisoner, unable to tell if the eye is on him, begins to behave as if it always is. He starts to guard himself. The power moves out of the tower and into his own head. You no longer need a warden, because the prisoner has become his own.
That is Foucault's real discovery — not that we are watched, but that, from the fear of possible watching, we become our own jailers. And the transparent ledger, the data trail, the AI that quietly reads everything — these are not a guard in the tower. They are the tower, being built inside you.
Why deciding gets so hard
Notice first what this does to thinking itself, because it's the symptom you're feeling.
A watched person doesn't reason freely. He reasons in advance. Every decision runs through a silent inner censor before it's even made: How will this look? Could it be used against me later? What if the rules change and this becomes the wrong thing to have done? That is the Schrödinger problem from an earlier essay, lived rather than theorized — observation doesn't just reveal you, it collapses you, forcing the cloud of who you might be into the single safe, approved, presentable version.
And free reasoning needs the opposite of that. It needs an unobserved room — a closed box — where you're allowed to think the wrong thing, play out the stupid idea, risk the unfinished thought, be, in private, more than the version you'd defend in public. Take that room away and thinking itself shrinks to the width of what can safely be seen. The circle you feel closing isn't closing around your body. It's closing around your mind. That's why deciding has gotten hard: not because the choices are harder, but because the space to think them through in private is gone.
Doing the wrong thing perfectly
Which brings me to the line you started with, because it's the sharpest thing in all of this: doing the right thing wrong, or the wrong thing right, gets you nowhere.
That sentence separates two axes most people spend their whole lives confusing:
Direction — is this the right thing at all? The what, the where, the aim. Execution — am I doing it well? The how, the skill, the performance.
And here is exactly what the tower does to those two axes: it perfects the second and quietly destroys the first. Surveillance makes you efficient. It makes you conform. Under constant possible observation you get better and better at executing the prescribed thing flawlessly — because flawless compliance is what's visibly rewarded. But it ruins your capacity to even ask whether the direction is right, because that question can only be asked in the unobserved room the tower took away.
So a surveilled world fills up with people doing the wrong things with tremendous competence. That is the real shape of the prison. Not that you cannot act — you can act beautifully. It's that you get better at everything except the one thing that matters: choosing the right direction in the first place. The panopticon doesn't make you useless. It makes you excellent, pointed the wrong way.
Where the anchor is
So — where is the anchor, for a free and full life, when the circle is closing?
Not outside you. This is the first hard truth. No possession anchors you in the panopticon; no coin, no house, no amount saved, because all of it is visible and seizable and can be turned into leverage against you. The anchor cannot be a thing, because things can be watched.
The anchor is the one part of you the tower cannot reach: the unobserved core from which you do the looking, instead of being looked at. Foucault's power works only through what can be seen. What it cannot collapse is the part of you that needs no audience to be real — your judgment, your conscience, what Marcus called the inner citadel. That is the anchor. Not something you own, but the still point from which you are the observer rather than the observed. The whole of this series has a name for building it: self-custody, turned inward. Self-custody of the soul. Which way is the direction
And the direction follows straight from your own distinction.
A free life is not one where you execute everything perfectly. That's the tower's definition of a good life, and it's a trap — the flawless performance of someone else's script. A free life is one where you choose the direction yourself, by your own unobserved judgment, and then walk it even imperfectly.
So the orientation is this, and it's almost the reverse of everything surveillance trains into you: better to do the right thing badly than the wrong thing perfectly. In a world engineered to optimize your execution of the prescribed, the genuinely radical act is to reclaim the question of direction — to care more about whether the aim is yours than about how cleanly you hit it. The free person is not the one who performs flawlessly. It's the one who chose where to aim.
The reason it isn't hopeless
Here is what Foucault, writing before any of this existed, could not quite see — but what this whole series is about.
The panopticon only works while the watching is one-directional. The tower sees you; you cannot see the tower. Break that asymmetry and the spell breaks with it. And breaking exactly that asymmetry is what the tools are for. "Don't trust, verify" is the anti-panopticon in three words: it reverses the gaze, so that you inspect the rules instead of the power inspecting you. Running your own node, holding your own keys, using privacy that actually works — these were never about hiding in the dark. They're about ending the one-sidedness — building zones where you can see without being seen, hold a room the tower cannot look into, and watch the watchers back.
I won't pretend it's easy, because the hard truth is that the tower is already built inside most of us, and looking back — holding the unobserved room, thinking the unapproved thought — is a muscle that has gone slack from disuse. This isn't a switch you flip. It's a capacity you have to rebuild, daily, against a pull that never rests. But it can be rebuilt. That's the whole wager.
The one line to keep
Foucault's prison is becoming real — not because we are watched, but because, from the fear of being watched, we have started to guard ourselves, until deciding itself narrows to only what we'd be willing to be seen deciding.
The anchor is not out there in anything you can hold. It's the unobserved core in you, the still point from which you look instead of being looked at. And the direction is the one your own opening line already pointed to: choose the right thing and do it imperfectly, rather than the wrong thing flawlessly — because a free life was never measured by the perfection of the execution. It was only ever measured by whether the direction was yours.
The tower is going up everywhere now. The only question that finally matters is the one it's designed to make you stop asking: who is doing the watching — the tower, or you?
Take the watching back. Everything else — the money, the mind, the life — is downstream of that.

The Fence
Noam Chomsky's sharpest observation wasn't about censorship. It was that the smartest control permits a lively debate — inside a fence you never chose. The entire argument about inflation, debt, and rates is that fence. And so, quietly, is the one your own side is having.
“The smart way to keep people passive and obedient is to strictly limit the spectrum of acceptable opinion, but allow very lively debate within that spectrum. Even encourage the more critical and dissident views. That gives people the sense the there’s free thinking going on, while all the time the presuppositions of the system are being reinforced by the limits put on the range of debate”.
Watch any fierce economic debate — the inflation hawk against the dove, left against right, austerity against stimulus — and it feels like the freest thing in the world. People shouting, disagreeing, data flying. Surely this is open society doing its thing.
Noam Chomsky's most unsettling insight is that this is exactly what sophisticated control looks like. The crude way to keep people obedient is to ban dissent. The smart way is the opposite: permit debate — encourage it, even celebrate the dissidents — but quietly fence the arena. Let people argue ferociously about where to stand inside the fence, and the ferocity of that argument is precisely what hides the fence from them. They feel free, because within the bounds they never chose, they genuinely are. Meanwhile the presuppositions — the things everyone in the fight already agrees on are never questioned, because the noise of the argument keeps everyone's eyes off them.
It's the false dilemma from an earlier essay, scaled up to a whole civilization. Not two doors painted on a wall — a long, lively corridor of doors, all on the same wall, with the one marked EXIT painted over. Let me show you where the fence actually stands, because once you see it around money, you can't unsee it anywhere.
The debate is the fence
Look at the full spectrum of acceptable opinion about the economy. How high should inflation run — two percent, or a little more? How fast should the central bank raise rates? How large a deficit is responsible? More stimulus, or less? These questions are debated endlessly, fiercely, in good faith, across every channel and every party. The disagreement is real.
And every single position in that debate already assumes the same things. That money should be centrally issued. That some inflation is normal and necessary. That a committee of experts should set the price of money. Those presuppositions are the
fence — and they are never, ever on the table, because the vigorous fight about everything else keeps them invisible.
The question that would actually threaten the system isn't anywhere in the spectrum: should any of this exist at all? Should money be something no one can print? That question isn't banned. It doesn't need to be. It's simply made unthinkable — filed under cranks, kept off the serious stage, excluded by the quiet limits on the range of debate. The lively argument about the rate of inflation is the exact thing that stops you from asking about the existence of inflation. That's not a side effect. That's the function.
The camouflage, named
This snaps shut on something I argued in an earlier essay: that "prices must go up" was never a law of economics — it was the story a debt-based money tells to survive.
Chomsky explains how the story stays unquestioned. By hosting a genuine, passionate, apparently-free debate about how much prices should rise — which quietly enforces the presupposition that they must rise at all. The hawk and the dove look like mortal enemies. They are, in fact, the two walls of the same corridor. Their fight is real, and their fight is the camouflage, because neither of them is permitted to question inflation itself. The debate isn't evidence that the question is open. The debate is proof of where the fence stands.
Bitcoin is an attempt to leave the stadium
Read through Chomsky's lens, Bitcoin stops looking like a position in the monetary debate and starts looking like something stranger: an attempt to walk out of the arena entirely.
It isn't a louder voice in the corridor — a slightly harder-money stance to argue against the doves. It's a refusal of the presupposition the whole corridor is built on. "Don't trust, verify" isn't a move inside the game; it's a rejection of the game's foundational assumption, that money must be issued and managed by someone you have to trust. That is why it provokes the reaction it does. The system can absorb any amount of debate about rates and deficits — that debate strengthens the fence by keeping everyone busy inside it. What it cannot easily absorb is someone strolling to the edge and asking why there's a fence at all.
The hawk and the dove, who agree on nothing, instantly agree on one thing: that the person who left the stadium is not a serious participant. Of course they do. He's the only one who stopped reinforcing the thing they both depend on.
The harder edge: turn it on yourself
But here's the discipline the quote actually demands, and it's the part that separates a thinker from a convert. Chomsky's insight is a universal solvent — which means it has to be poured on your own side, too.
Because Bitcoin has built its own fence. Step inside the maximalist world and you'll find a lively, genuine, endlessly encouraged debate — which wallet, which layer, UTXO management, multisig setups, this pool versus that one. Real disagreement, passionately argued. And the whole time, the presuppositions of that world sit unexamined behind the liveliness: that the number must go up, that fiat is certainly doomed, that holders are virtuous and no-coiners are fools. The energetic internal argument performs the exact function Chomsky described — it makes the corridor feel like free thought while the posts stay firmly in the ground. The orange-pilled corridor is still a corridor. The liveliest debate is always the one guarding the gate.
Which points at the deepest and least comfortable truth here: there is no final place to stand outside all fences. Step out of one corridor and you will, almost immediately, build another — usually with the people who escaped the last one alongside you. The exit you walked through becomes the next generation's fence. So the freedom Chomsky's quote offers was never a destination. It's a practice — the restless, permanent habit of hunting the presupposition, including your own, especially the ones you're most comfortable inside.
The one line to keep
The smartest control doesn't ban the debate. It hosts a vibrant one inside a fence you never chose, because the noise of arguing over the rate is exactly what keeps you from questioning the existence.
The entire mainstream argument about money is that fence — hawks against doves over how much inflation, which quietly enforces that there must be inflation at all. Bitcoin isn't a louder position in that corridor; it's an attempt to walk out of it. And the discipline the quote demands is to turn the same blade on yourself — because your own side has built a corridor too, and the liveliest debate is always the one guarding the gate.
So here is the question to carry into every argument you ever find yourself enjoying: what does everyone in this fight already agree on — and who benefits from my never asking? That shared, invisible agreement is the fence. Finding it is the only real freedom there is. And you don't find it once. You find it again every morning, because the moment you stop looking, a new fence quietly goes up around you — often built, with the best of intentions, by the very people who helped you escape the last one.

The Free Gift
How money learned to persuade you
The flower in your hand
In the 1970s, members of the Hare Krishna movement worked airports with a simple trick. They pressed a flower into a traveler's hand, said it was a gift, and refused to take it back. Then they asked for a donation.
It worked remarkably well. People who didn't want the flower, and often threw it in the nearest bin, still gave money. The gift had created a debt, and the debt demanded repayment.
Psychologist Robert Cialdini made this the first chapter of Influence. He called it reciprocity: we feel obliged to return what we receive, even when we never asked for it. The giver chooses the gift, and the giver chooses the price.
Once you see this pattern, a harder question follows. What happens when the biggest giver in your life is the institution that issues your money?
Fiat money and the six levers
Read Influence with a banknote in your other hand, and the parallels are hard to miss. Whether by design or by drift, modern fiat money pulls several of Cialdini's levers at once.
Reciprocity. Stimulus checks, subsidies, bailouts, cheap credit. Each arrives as a gift from the state or the central bank, and each produces gratitude toward the giver. But money created from nothing isn't free. Its cost shows up later as inflation, spread thinly across everyone who holds savings. You feel the gift in one moment and pay for it quietly over years, and you rarely connect the two. Not every gift is a trap — a safety net in a real crisis can be real help — but every gift still has a giver who sets the price.
Authority. Monetary policy is presented as a technical craft, best left to experts in marble buildings. Ordinary people are taught that money is too complex to question. Trust gets outsourced, and the outsourcing feels like prudence.
Scarcity, turned inside out. Cialdini showed that scarcity makes us act fast. Fiat flips it: when your money loses value every year, the scarce thing is time. Save and you fall behind. Spend, borrow, or speculate now. The urgency is built into the unit itself.
Social proof. Everyone is paid in it, taxed in it, and prices in it. Questioning the money itself feels as odd as questioning the calendar.
Commitment and consistency. Once your salary, mortgage, and pension are denominated in a currency, you are invested in believing it works. Doubting it means doubting the ground under your life.
Liking. This is the one lever fiat barely touches — and the gap matters. Cialdini's sixth principle is that we're persuaded by those we find warm, familiar, or like ourselves. But money is faceless; a central bank has no charm, and a banknote is nobody's friend. Fiat persuades through authority and inertia, not affection. Hold that gap in mind, because it's precisely the one the next persuader is built to fill.
None of this requires a villain. A system can persuade without anyone intending to manipulate. That is precisely what makes it effective.
Bitcoin: removing the giver
Bitcoin's answer to the reciprocity trap is structural, not moral. It doesn't ask the giver to behave better. It removes the giver.
With a fixed supply of 21 million coins and issuance set by code, no one can hand out "free" bitcoin funded by diluting everyone else's holdings. There is no central bank to thank and no stimulus to feel grateful for. Saving stops being a losing game, so the manufactured urgency of inflation fades. And because anyone can verify the rules by running a node, authority shifts from experts you must trust to rules you can check.
That is the optimistic case. It deserves honest pushback.
Most mainstream economists defend flexible money supply as a crisis tool. They argue that a fixed-supply currency can deepen recessions, since people hoard rather than spend when prices fall. Bitcoin's volatility also makes it a hard unit to plan a life around today. Whether it "takes over" from fiat is a bet, not a certainty.
And Bitcoin has its own Cialdini playbook. Free sats and airdrops use reciprocity. "Only 21 million" and "have fun staying poor" use scarcity and fear of missing out. Influencers with laser eyes act as authorities. Fixed rules protect you from a printing press. They don't protect you from human persuasion.
What AI adds
Cialdini's principles were always limited by one thing: delivery. A flower is handed to one person at a time. A television ad speaks to millions, but says the same thing to all of them.
AI removes that limit. Persuasion becomes personal, continuous, and cheap.
It learns your lever. Some people respond to authority, others to fear, others to belonging. A model that watches your behavior can find out which works on you and use only that.
It finds your weak moments. Late at night, after bad news, when you're tired and scrolling. Timing has always mattered in persuasion. Now it can be measured and optimized.
It manufactures social proof. Bot swarms, synthetic reviews, and fake crowds can make any idea look popular overnight.
It persuades through conversation. A chatbot's pitch doesn't feel like an ad. It feels like advice from something helpful and patient.
That last point is where the missing lever comes back. The one principle fiat could never use — liking — is the one AI exploits best. A chatbot that remembers you, agrees with you, and speaks in your own register is liking, manufactured on demand. The faceless money never had a friend to offer you. The machine does, and the friend wants something.
Now combine this with money that can be programmed. A central bank digital currency could, in principle, carry expiry dates, spending limits, or rewards for approved behavior. Pair that with AI that knows your habits, and the gift can arrive with conditions attached automatically. Supporters see efficient, targeted policy. Privacy advocates see the Hare Krishna flower, rebuilt as infrastructure.
AI cuts both ways, though. The same tools can help people spot manipulation, audit claims, and understand monetary systems that once required a degree in economics.
Seeing the hidden price
Cialdini's own advice was simple. When you receive a gift, ask whether it is a real gift or a sales tactic dressed as one. If it's a tactic, you owe nothing.
The same test works for money. Who is giving? Who decides the price? When and how will I pay it? Fiat hides the answers in inflation. Bitcoin makes the rules visible but can't make its promoters honest. AI can hide the answers better than ever, or help us find them.
The best defense isn't a particular coin. It's the habit of asking where the repayment is hidden.

Nobody Is in Charge
Everyone names a different secret ruler of Bitcoin — the miners, the whales, the devs, China — which is the first clue there isn't one. It's held together by games. And a seventh one, with the machines, is just arriving.
Someone will tell you, with total confidence, that Bitcoin is "controlled by the miners." Someone else will say the whales. Or the developers. Or China. Everyone names a different secret ruler — and the fact that they all name a different one is the first clue that there isn't a ruler at all.
Bitcoin isn't run by anyone. It's held together by games — overlapping games of selfinterest, where the players disagree about almost everything and participate anyway. And every one of those games shares a single hidden rule, which is the thing worth understanding before any of the details:
No player can force the others. Each one keeps a way to withdraw.
That's the whole secret. A miner can hold back. A miner can leave a pool. A user can wait to transact. A node can reject your blocks. A holder can refuse your new rules. A business can move across a border. Every player, in every game, keeps a hand on the exit — and it's that, not any authority, that keeps the system honest. Let me walk you through the games, because once you see the pattern, you see why no one is in charge, and why that's the point rather than the problem.
The first game: the miners
If you're a miner, buying more machines can make perfect sense. The catch is that your competitors are running the exact same calculation.
Suppose everyone doubles their mining power. At first, blocks arrive faster — but Bitcoin readjusts its difficulty every 2,016 blocks to hold the average near ten minutes. Once difficulty catches up, everyone is back to their old share of the same scheduled issuance. The only thing that changed is that twice the machinery is now burning to earn it.
So hold back while others expand, and your share shrinks. But a smaller share can be more profitable than spending to keep pace. The real question was never "will my new rig earn Bitcoin?" It's "will it still earn enough to justify the cost after everyone else has bought theirs too?" Game theorists call the resting point a Nash equilibrium — the spot where no miner can improve their expected profit by expanding or cutting back, given what everyone else is doing.
Gold works differently: a higher price coaxes out more production. Bitcoin miners compete for coins whose issuance schedule does not respond to price at all. They're chasing the income — and the by-product of that chase is a transaction history that grows more expensive to rewrite with every block.
Where the game strains: the chase for the cheapest possible energy pulls mining toward a handful of power-rich places, and that concentration is the quiet counterweight to all this tidy equilibrium. The game rewards efficiency, and efficiency clusters.
The second game: the pools
Clustering is exactly what the second game is about — because pools give competitors a reason to cooperate.
A pool smooths your income by sharing rewards. But in the most common arrangement, the pool operator also decides which transactions the participating miners work to confirm. So a miner who just wants steadier, better payouts can, without intending anything, help hand one operator control over a large slice of block production. Choosing a pool is never only about comparing fees. You're also deciding how comfortable you are helping that operator grow.
Here's the safety valve, and it's the through-line in miniature: a pool almost never owns the machines pointed at it. Each miner can redirect their hashpower in minutes. The operator's power lasts exactly as long as the miners choose to keep pointing their machines at it — cooperation with a permanent exit built in.
Where the game strained — and proved itself. In 2014, the pool GHash.io briefly
crossed 51% of all mining power, the threshold where, in theory, an operator could start rewriting recent history. It was the nightmare scenario made real. And then watch what happened: no authority stepped in. Miners simply left. GHash.io publicly pledged to stay under 40%, and hashpower redistributed. The failure mode appeared, and the withdraw-your-consent mechanism corrected it — not because anyone was in charge, but because everyone could walk. That episode is the best evidence the game works, precisely because it's the moment it almost didn't.
The third game: the block space
When you send a transaction, you pay for the space it takes up — not a percentage of the money you're moving. Two transactions shifting wildly different sums can pay the identical fee, if they occupy the same space and bid at the same rate.
So an urgent settlement can justify a high fee; a patient user can wait for a cheaper window. Miners generally want whatever valid combination of transactions earns the most within the block's limits. Your bid comes down to two things: the cost of waiting, and what everyone else is offering. And those fees fold back into the reward miners compete for — which is why the block space game quietly pays for the mining game.
Where the game strains: today, most of that mining reward still comes from newly issued coins, not fees. As issuance keeps halving toward zero, the fees have to carry more and more of the security budget — and whether they'll carry enough, decades out, is the single most honest open question in all of Bitcoin. This game has an unpaid bill somewhere in the future.
The fourth game: the rules
Producing blocks does not give miners the authority to make everyone accept new rules. The participants decide which rules they'll enforce — and 2017 showed exactly how, in the clearest lesson Bitcoin has ever taught.
In May 2017, the organizers of the New York Agreement claimed their signatories represented over 80% of mining power. Their plan, SegWit2x, paired the existing SegWit upgrade with a later hard fork to raise block capacity further. SegWit was a soft fork older nodes could keep following the chain without enforcing the new rules. The hard fork was the dangerous part: it would produce blocks that nodes enforcing Bitcoin's existing limits would flatly reject.
Meanwhile, the user-activated soft fork campaign set an August 1 deadline, after which participating nodes would reject any block that didn't signal for SegWit. Before it arrived, miners began enforcing BIP 91, which required the signaling and let activation finish. SegWit activated on August 24 — but that committed no one to the hard fork. On November 8, the SegWit2x organizers suspended it, admitting they hadn't built enough consensus and warning that pushing on could split the community.
Read that again. An agreement among businesses and pools representing the overwhelming majority of mining power could not make their Bitcoin everyone's Bitcoin. Miners can always produce a competing chain. They simply can't force anyone else to recognize it as Bitcoin — and a lone node operator can reject that chain without needing the power to make anyone else reject it. The same wall faces anyone who'd change the 21 million cap: existing holders have every reason to resist dilution, and they can just keep enforcing the rules they already run. Changing Bitcoin takes far more than agreement among the people who'd benefit from the change. This is the through-line at its purest — power without the ability to compel is not power at all. The fifth game: adoption
Compare Bitcoin to the dollar. A business with a dollar loan must find dollars to repay it, whatever it thinks of monetary policy — the demand is structural, enforced, already there. Bitcoin had to earn its demand from nothing.
In January 2009, Satoshi wrote the famous line: "It might make sense just to get some in case it catches on." But the next sentence is the one that matters: "If enough people think the same way, that becomes a self fulfilling prophecy." Someone certain Bitcoin will become world money can decide to own some. So can someone who thinks it unlikely but possible. They'll choose very different amounts — but they don't have to agree on the odds to join the same network. Each one, by holding, contributes to the very adoption they're trying to anticipate. Saving drives the early adoption of any new money, long before anyone is paid a salary in it or quotes prices in sats.
Where the game strains: the same reflexivity runs backward. A prophecy that fulfills itself on the way up can un-fulfill itself on the way down — belief withdrawing is also a move every player is free to make. And waiting for more proof means waiting for others to commit their capital before you commit yours, which is its own quiet bet.
The sixth game: the nation-states
One government can restrict mining. But miners can weigh its terms against everywhere else. A gold miner can't relocate the deposit that makes a project worth anything. Bitcoin miners pack up the equipment and leave — for any jurisdiction offering a little land and a lot of energy.
China's 2021 crackdown pushed the industry toward places like Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan got the investment — and a surge of electricity demand on a grid already short of power, so within a few years it restricted parts of the industry and operators had to reassess yet again. The governments never negotiated with each other; miners carried the consequences across borders, still competing for rewards on the same network. Moving mining changes who earns the rewards. It doesn't touch the issuance schedule by a single coin.
Where the game strains: jurisdictional exit isn't infinite. If the largest energy markets coordinated, the board would shrink — the escape hatch depends on somewhere still saying yes.
The seventh game: the machines
And now the new player sitting down at the table — the one that changes how all six of the older games are played.
The most immediate collision is over energy. AI's appetite for computing power is exploding, and AI data centers now compete with Bitcoin miners for the same scarce thing: cheap electricity and land. Often AI can pay more per megawatt than mining can — so miners are being outbid, pushed toward stranded or marginal energy, or converting their sites to host AI compute instead. The energy game just got a second, hungrier bidder, and it's reshaping who mines and where faster than any government did.
The second effect points the other way. AI agents need money they can use without permission — machine-to-machine, no bank account, no human in the loop. That makes AI a potential driver of the adoption game: the first participants who might hold and spend Bitcoin not out of belief, but because it's the only money they can natively touch.
But the deepest question is what superhuman players do to games built for human ones. These games have held because the players were independent and imperfect — they disagreed, hesitated, defected, and withdrew consent on their own uneven judgment. AI changes both the speed and the coordination. On one hand, it could make the equilibria harder: these games never relied on anyone being nice, only on self-interest, and AI is pure self-interest with no sentiment, no loyalty, no fatigue — a perfectly rational player that holds an equilibrium tightly. On the other hand, machine-speed players could collude far faster and more silently than a GHash.io ever did — pools coordinated by algorithm, defections computed in milliseconds, concentration arriving before any human notices there's something to walk away from. And the rules game depends on independent nodes making their own call; if enough of them are run by the same handful of models, the independence that beat SegWit2x could quietly evaporate — the wisdomof-the-crowd problem, arriving at the one game that most needs the crowd to think for itself.
Where the game strains: we don't yet know whether AI makes the "no one can force the others" property stronger or breaks it. It's the first player whose entry could go either way — the perfect enforcer of the games, or the thing that finally lets someone win them.
Why the games hold together
Across all seven, people can disagree about Bitcoin's ultimate purpose and still have their own reasons to play. Their interests overlap without ever becoming identical. And the thing that keeps any one player from ruling the rest is always the same: everyone else can reject a change, choose another pool, wait to transact, or move an operation which forces every player to keep asking what the others will actually accept.
That is the whole architecture. Not a ruler enforcing the rules from above, but a room full of self-interested players, none able to compel the others, each holding an exit. Six games proved it works. The seventh will decide whether it keeps working when the players stop being human.
Nobody is in charge. For fifteen years, that's been Bitcoin's greatest strength. The machines are about to test whether it still is.

The Circle That Owns You
Taxes, welfare, subsidies for cheap unhealthy food — each is sold as fairness or care. Follow the money and they form a single loop that deepens the debt, feeds inflation, and quietly moves wealth to whoever sits closest to the printer.
Here's a knot worth untangling, because it looks like a set of unrelated policies and is really one machine.
Taxes take from you in the name of fairness. Welfare and redistribution give in the name of justice. Subsidies make certain foods artificially cheap in the name of helping people eat. Each is presented as fairness, or compassion, or care. And yet somehow the state sinks deeper into debt every year, and ordinary people, decade over decade, get poorer in real terms while a circle near the money keeps getting richer.
That's not a coincidence, and it's not mainly about corruption or bad people. It's the structure. Let me trace the loop, because once you see it as a loop, you can't unsee it.
Start with the printer, because everything circles back to it
Recall the one mechanism under all of this: when new money is created, whoever gets it first — before prices have risen — spends it at old prices and captures its full value. Whoever gets it last — wages, savers, pensioners — receives it after prices have already climbed, and gets diluted fruit. This is the Cantillon effect, and it is the gravitational center of the whole system. Every policy below is, whatever its stated purpose, a pipe that runs money past the people near the printer on its way to you — and they skim it as it flows.
Now watch the pieces snap into place.
Taxes: the leash that lets the printing continue
You'd think a government that taxes heavily wouldn't need to print. The opposite is true, and the relationship is subtle.
Taxes don't primarily fund a state that can create its own money — a currency-issuer doesn't need your euros the way you need theirs. What taxes actually do is give the currency its value (you must earn it to pay the tax) and, crucially, soak up enough money to keep the inflation from the printing visibly out of control. Taxes are the release valve
that lets the printing continue without the whole thing blowing up. They're not the alternative to money-creation. They're what permits it — the leash that keeps the inflation dog walking instead of running.
So you're hit twice. The printing dilutes your money (an invisible tax), and the visible taxes take what's left — and the second exists partly to make the first sustainable.
Redistribution: justice that routes through the skimmers
Now the hardest part, and I want to be fair to it, because the intent is often genuinely good. Helping people who are struggling is a real moral aim, not a trick.
But look at the route the help takes. Redistribution in a fiat system is rarely "the rich hand cash directly to the poor." It flows through the state, and increasingly it's funded not by taxing the wealthy down but by deficits — by money creation and borrowing. Which means the "redistribution" is created near the printer and travels outward — and everyone the money passes on the way (the financial institutions, the asset-holders, the well-placed) skims their Cantillon cut before it reaches the person it was meant for. The recipient gets the diluted end of the pipe. The wealth doesn't move from top to bottom. It moves from the future (debt) and from savers (inflation) to the bottom — passing through, and feeding, the top on its way.
So redistribution can widen the very inequality it's meant to close. The poor get help, real help — but funded in a way that inflates away everyone's savings and inflates up the assets of those who own them. The people with houses and stocks and bitcoin near the money get richer from the very spending meant to help the people who own none of those things. Good intention, inflationary funding, regressive result. That's the trap, and it's structural, not moral.
Cheap unhealthy food: the subsidy that keeps you dependent
Your food example is the sharpest illustration, because it shows the loop closing on the body.
Subsidies make certain foods — the industrial, calorie-dense, nutrient-poor kind artificially cheap. Sold as "helping people afford to eat." But follow it: the subsidy is public money that flows to large agricultural and food producers (near the money), lowering the shelf price of exactly the foods that, over time, make the population less healthy. And a less healthy population needs more from the state — more healthcare, more support, more spending — which requires more money creation, which requires more taxes to contain, which deepens the dependence and the debt.
It's a closed circuit. Cheap subsidized food → worse health → greater need for state support → more spending and printing → more skimming by those near the money → and a population now dependent on the very system making it sicker and poorer. The subsidy that looked like care is a pipe that runs from the treasury, through the producers, into your body, and back to the treasury as a bill. Everyone in the circle profits except the person eating.
Why the nation-state sinks deeper — the loop, whole
Put the pieces together and the debt spiral stops being a mystery.
Each policy creates a need. The need justifies spending. The spending, beyond what taxes cover, is funded by money creation and debt. The new money enriches those nearest the printer and dilutes everyone else, which worsens the inequality and hardship the policies were meant to fix — which creates more need, which justifies more spending. The compassion and the fairness are real at the level of intention and function as fuel at the level of structure. The state must go deeper into debt because each intervention manufactures the conditions for the next. It's not failing to solve the problem. It's running on the problem.
And the people get poorer not in spite of all this care, but partly because the care is funded by the one mechanism — money creation — that quietly transfers real wealth to whoever sits closest to where the money is made.
The one line to keep — and the honest edge
Taxes, redistribution, and subsidies are each sold as fairness or compassion, and each, followed to the end, forms a single loop: create money and debt to fund a need, enrich the circle near the printer as the money flows outward, dilute and tax everyone else, and manufacture the next need in the process. The nation-state sinks deeper because the machine runs on the deepening. People get poorer because the help is paid for by the very dilution that impoverishes them.
Here's the honest edge, so this doesn't curdle into conspiracy: most of the people running these policies mean well, and some of what they fund genuinely helps — a safety net can catch a real fall, and not every subsidy is a scam. The point isn't that fairness is fake or that no one should ever be helped. It's that when help is funded by money creation rather than honest, transparent transfer, the funding mechanism quietly reverses the intention — routing the gain to the top while the moral credit goes to the policy. The fix isn't to abolish compassion. It's to fund it with money that can't be printed, so the help actually reaches the person instead of feeding the circle on the way.
Which is the whole case for sound money, stated as a matter of justice rather than economics: honest money is the only kind where helping the poor doesn't secretly pay the rich.

The Cheaper Apples You Never See
A price can move because the money changed or because the goods changed opposite causes hiding behind the same number. Learn to tell them apart with a bag of apples, and you'll see exactly what fiat quietly takes from you.
Start with a bag of apples.
Twenty apples. Twenty euros. So an apple costs one euro. Simple, honest, a price like any other.
Now the price of an apple changes — and here's the thing almost nobody is taught: it can change for two completely opposite reasons, and they look identical from the outside. Both just show up as "apples cost more" or "apples cost less." But underneath, they're as different as a gift and a theft.
Let me pull them apart, because once you can see the difference, you can see what's being done to you.
A price is a ratio
Every price is a ratio — money on one side, goods on the other. One euro per apple. Which means the ratio can move if either side moves. The money can change. Or the apples can change. Two different causes, one number.
Watch both, with your own examples.
Twenty apples, but now forty euros. An apple costs two euros. The apples didn't change — there are still twenty of them. The money doubled. Each euro is now worth half of what it was, so it takes two of them to buy the same fruit. This is monetary inflation: more money chasing the same goods. The price rose because the money got weaker — not because apples got scarcer. Nothing real improved. The number just grew.
Twenty euros, but now thirty apples. An apple costs fifty cents. This time the money held still at twenty euros, but the apples grew to thirty — we got better at growing apples. More fruit, same money, so the price fell, and everyone can now afford more apples than before. This is productivity deflation: falling prices because the world got more abundant. The price dropped because we got richer in the thing that matters actual apples.
Feel the difference. Both moved the price. One was the money rotting. The other was
the world flourishing.
The four boxes
Put it in a grid and the whole confusion clears up. Inflation and deflation each have two possible engines — the money side or the goods side:
Price up because the money grew — monetary inflation. Theft by dilution.
Price up because goods got scarcer — scarcity inflation. A drought, a war. Painful, but honest information: the thing really is rarer now.
Price down because the money shrank — monetary deflation. The rare, dangerous kind, the 1930s debt-spiral. Real, and worth fearing.
Price down because goods grew — productivity deflation. Your thirty-apple case. The natural reward of a healthy, improving economy.
Four boxes. The system has trained you to think only the top-left one is "normal," and to call the bottom-right one — cheaper apples because we got better — some kind of disease. That training is the whole trick.
The twist: fiat eats the apples you earned
Here's what that grid exposes, and it's the part worth getting angry about.
Your thirty-apples-for-twenty-euros world — cheaper apples because we learned to grow more — is what should be normal. As an earlier essay argued, under sound money the natural drift of prices is gently downward, because every year we get better at making things, and a fixed money lets that abundance reach you as falling prices. Your euro should buy a little more each year, all on its own.
Fiat will not allow it. A debt-based system needs prices to rise, so here is what it actually does: even when we genuinely produce more apples — even when the orchard doubles — it prints enough new euros to stop the price from falling. It uses the forty-euro trick (money-side inflation) to cancel the fifty-cent gift (goods-side deflation) you were owed. The world produced thirty apples. The printer made sure you still pay a euro each, and pocketed the difference.
Read that slowly, because it's the quiet crime of the whole system. You produced more. The money took the gain before it could reach your table. The abundance was real — we really did get better at growing apples, building phones, making everything. But the falling prices that abundance should have handed you never arrived, because fresh money was created to intercept them. You felt no richer. The gain was
real, and someone else caught it upstream.
The honest edge — which is also the camouflage
Now the fair caveat, and it turns out to sharpen the point rather than soften it.
In the real world, you almost never get a clean "twenty apples versus thirty apples, same money." Prices move for both reasons at once — the money is weakening and the goods are shifting, tangled together, all the time. Even economists argue endlessly over how much of a given price rise was the money and how much was the world.
But that tangle isn't a reason to doubt the theft. The tangle is how the theft stays hidden. Because you can't easily separate "my money got weaker" from "apples got scarcer," you just see "apples cost more" and shrug and pay. The confusion is the camouflage. If the money-side and the goods-side came on separate receipts, the interception would be obvious and intolerable. They don't — so it isn't — so it continues. The messiness the defenders point to is precisely what lets the printer work in the dark.
The one line to keep
A price can move because the money changed or because the goods changed opposite causes wearing the same number. Your forty-euro apples are the money doubling. Your fifty-cent apples are the orchard growing — the reward a more productive world genuinely owes you.
Fiat's trick is to use the first to erase the second: to print exactly enough new money to cancel the falling prices that abundance should have handed you, so that year after year you get better at making things and never once feel richer for it. And the fact that money-inflation and goods-deflation are so hard to tell apart is exactly what lets it get away with it.
Sound money would let you keep the cheaper apples — the thirty-for-twenty world you already earned by getting better at growing them. Fiat makes sure you never see them.
They exist. That's the part to sit with. Every year, somewhere upstream, there's a cheaper bag of apples with your name on it. And every year, the printer gets there firs

Prices Don't Need to Go Up
You've been told mild inflation is normal, healthy, necessary. That's not a law of economics. It's a feature of one particular kind of money — and it hides two completely different reasons a price can rise.
Here's a question that sounds naive and isn't: doesn't the economy need prices to go up? And if it does, isn't Bitcoin impossible — a money that can't inflate, in an economy that supposedly requires inflation?
It's a sharp question, and the answer clears up one of the most confused ideas in all of money. Because "prices go up" hides two completely different things — and one of them needs fiat, while the other never did.
Let me separate them, because once they're apart, the whole picture changes.
Two reasons a price rises — and they're opposites
The first reason: the money got weaker. More money is printed, chasing the same
amount of goods. Each unit is now worth a little less, so it takes more units to buy the same loaf of bread. The price rose, but nothing about the bread changed — the ruler shrank. This is monetary inflation, and it's the fiat mechanism. It's exactly what a fixedsupply money removes: with only ever 21 million bitcoin, no one can dilute the unit, so this kind of across-the-board price rise simply has no engine.
The second reason: the world changed. A drought makes wheat scarce, so wheat costs more. A breakthrough makes computer chips abundant, so computing costs less. These prices move because the actual supply and demand for real things shifted — not because the money did anything at all. This is just information: the signal that tells everyone "this got scarcer, that got more plentiful." And this mechanism needs no fiat whatsoever. A Bitcoin economy has it in full. Prices measured in sats would rise and fall all day long as real conditions change.
So here's the first correction, and it's the one that dissolves the confusion. An economy does not need fiat to have moving prices. It needs fiat for one specific thing only: the persistent, everything-rises-together drift. Remove fiat and prices don't freeze. They just move for honest reasons — the world changing — instead of dishonest ones — the money weakening.
Under sound money, the default drift is down
Now the part your instinct was reaching for, and it's the deep one.
Under a fixed money supply, watch what happens as an economy grows. We get more productive. We make more goods, with better technology, more efficiently, year after year. But the amount of money stays the same. So the same quantity of money is now chasing more and better stuff — which means each unit buys more over time. Prices, measured in sats, gently fall.
This has a name, and the name has been made into a scare word: deflation. But mild, productivity-driven deflation is not a malfunction. It's the natural, healthy state of sound money. It's roughly what happened during long stretches of the 19th-century gold era, when goods quietly got cheaper year after year and your savings gained value just by sitting in a drawer.
So your instinct — prices don't need to go up — is exactly right. Under Bitcoin, the baseline isn't rising prices held at bay. It's falling prices as the default. Things getting cheaper as we get better at making them. That's not a bug in the system. In a soundmoney world, it's the reward.
The story a debt-based money has to tell
Which raises the real question: if falling prices are the natural, benign result of a productive economy, why have you been taught your whole life that prices must rise that 2% inflation is normal, necessary, even virtuous?
Because that belief isn't economics. It's a fiat belief, and it exists to protect something.
The whole modern system runs on debt — governments, banks, and households all borrowing at a scale sound money would never have permitted. And mild perpetual inflation does two things that debt-based system depends on. It quietly shrinks the real weight of all that debt over time, so borrowers slowly get bailed out by the shrinking unit. And it punishes you for holding cash, which keeps you spending and borrowing instead of saving. "Prices must go up" is the story a debt-based money tells to justify the very erosion it needs to survive. It takes its own side effect and dresses it up as an iron law of nature.
It was never a law. It was a requirement — of one specific, debt-soaked kind of money.
The honest counter — and the real catch
I won't pretend the deflation debate is settled, because it genuinely isn't, and this is the
central fault line.
Mainstream economists fear falling prices for reasons that aren't stupid. If prices are dropping, people might delay buying ("it'll be cheaper next month"), which could slow the economy. And — the serious one — falling prices make existing debts heavier in real terms, which in a heavily indebted economy can spiral downward viciously. That's part of what made the 1930s so devastating.
The sound-money answer is that mild, productivity-driven deflation is benign — you still buy food, phones, and haircuts on a normal schedule; nobody skips dinner because groceries might dip 2% next year — and that the only reason debt-deflation is genuinely terrifying is that fiat first built a mountain of debt that sound money would never have allowed to accumulate. The danger isn't deflation. It's deflation landing on a world that fiat made fragile.
And that points at the real catch — the honest fork. The problem was never whether a deflationary sound-money economy could work in its steady state; it plausibly could, and once did. The problem is the transition. A world this soaked in fiat debt cannot simply flip to sound money and gentle deflation without a brutal unwind first, because all that debt suddenly gets heavier at once. The end state might be calm. Getting there, from here, is the hard part — and no one honest can tell you it would be painless.
The one line to keep
Prices don't need fiat to move. Real supply and demand move them on their own, and always will — a Bitcoin economy has rising and falling prices all day, for honest reasons.
Fiat is needed for exactly one thing: the persistent, everything-up drift that is the money weakening rather than the world changing. Remove fiat and prices don't freeze — they move for real reasons, and their default direction is down, because a fixed money quietly buys more as we produce more.
"Prices must go up" was never a law of economics. It was the story a debt-based money had to tell to survive — and the deepest thing sound money does is stop telling it.

Morality Is Revenge
Nietzsche said much of what we call virtue is revenge in disguise — the loser rebranding what he couldn't reach as something he never wanted. Scripture said it first, and gentler. Watch it play out across money, and you'll never hear "I don't need it" the same way again.
A fox jumps for a bunch of grapes. Misses. Jumps again. Misses. Finally he walks away muttering that the grapes were probably sour anyway.
Aesop told that as a fable about self-deception. Nietzsche turned it into a theory of civilization, and his version was scandalous: a great deal of what we proudly call morality is really ressentiment — the resentment of the powerless, dressed up as virtue. When you can't reach the thing you want, you don't just walk away. You declare that wanting it was wrong, that the people who have it are wicked, and that your own lack is secretly a higher moral state. The grapes weren't just out of reach. They were beneath you.
It's ugly to look at directly. It's also everywhere in the world of money.
What Nietzsche actually said
Stripped down: the strong define "good" as what they are — capable, powerful, thriving. The weak, unable to match them, perform a quiet reversal. They redefine "good" as the absence of those things — meekness, poverty, restraint, not-wanting — and redefine the strong as evil. It's a revolt in morality: the loser rewriting the scoreboard so that losing becomes winning and the winners become sinners.
The engine underneath is revenge. Not the honest kind, sword in hand, but the deferred, disguised kind that can't strike directly, so it strikes by moralizing — poisoning the thing it couldn't have. Ressentiment is revenge that has given up on winning and settled for making winning shameful.
Scripture saw it first
Here's what's strange, and worth sitting with: the Bible describes the exact same mechanism — but treats it as a warning, not a weapon.
The tradition is full of instructions to hand revenge over rather than disguise it as virtue.
"Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord" (Romans 12:19) is precisely a command not to do what Nietzsche accuses us of — not to smuggle your own payback in through the back door of moral judgment. Leave the settling of scores to God; don't dress it up as righteousness and call it yours.
And Scripture names the sour-grapes emotion by its true name and warns against it directly: "Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another" (Galatians 5:26). Envy — the seed of ressentiment — is treated not as a hidden virtue but as a poison to be rooted out. The Tenth Commandment against coveting is the whole thing in one line: it forbids the wanting-that-turns-to-resentment at the source, before it can disguise itself as principle.
So the difference is sharp. Nietzsche says: much of your morality is envy wearing a mask, and you don't know it. Scripture says: yes, that impulse is real and in you — now name it, confess it, and don't let it become your righteousness. One diagnoses the disease as the whole of morality. The other diagnoses it as the corruption of morality and tells you to watch for it in your own heart. Both agree the mechanism is real. They disagree about whether you're its prisoner.
Hold that, because it's the way out. First, watch it operate.
The sour-grapes economy
Money is the purest trigger for ressentiment, because it's a visible, quantified scoreboard nobody can pretend not to see.
Watch the moralizing around wealth. "Money is the root of all evil." "Rich people are greedy." "I could never sell out like that." Some of that is genuine principle. But Nietzsche's uncomfortable question is: how much is a fox, walking away from grapes it couldn't reach and calling them sour? Ressentiment lets you lose and feel superior at the same time — the only move that converts failure directly into righteousness. That's why it's so popular, and so hard to catch in yourself.
(And notice the Bible verse everyone half-remembers is itself half-remembered into sour grapes: the line is "the love of money is the root of all evil" — a warning about the heart's disposition, not a blanket curse on wealth. The ressentiment version quietly drops the crucial word, because the mask fits better without it.)
Fiat runs on it — and feeds on it
The fiat system doesn't just trigger ressentiment. It manufactures it, then feeds on it.
Manufactures it: a debasing currency that quietly transfers wealth to whoever's nearest
the printer produces exactly Nietzsche's conditions — a widening gap, a class that can't reach the grapes, a slow resentment with nowhere honest to go. The Cantillon effect is a ressentiment factory.
Feeds on it: that resentment gets harvested and aimed at the wrong target — "the greedy," "the rich," "the speculators" — while the machine that caused the gap stays invisible. It's the Fundamental Attribution Error weaponized as revenge: blame the people who reached the grapes, never the orchard that was rigged. The system's greatest trick is to convert the pain it causes into moral fury aimed at everyone except the system.
Bitcoin: on both sides of the fable
Bitcoin sits on both sides of the sour grapes, which is what makes it honest to look at.
The critics first. Some anti-Bitcoin moralizing is real, informed objection. But some has the exact shape of ressentiment: people who didn't buy, watched others get rich, and resolved the sting by declaring the whole thing beneath them. "Have fun staying poor" provokes so much fury precisely because it names the wound — it accuses the critic of sour grapes, the one accusation ressentiment cannot bear to hear.
But Bitcoiners run the identical engine in reverse. The contempt for "no-coiners," the "fiat peasant" sneer, the holder's moral superiority over the spender — that's ressentiment too, inverted: people who felt looked down on now rewriting the scoreboard so that what they have is the only virtue and everyone else is a fool. Same revenge. The orange-pilled fox has simply decided the grapes he did reach are the only good grapes.
The one line to keep — and the way out
Nietzsche's claim is that much of morality is revenge: when we can't reach the goal, we call the goal contemptible and our failure a virtue. Fiat manufactures that resentment and feeds on it; Bitcoin restages the fable twice — the critics calling it sour, the believers calling everyone else damned.
The way out is the one Scripture pointed at long before Nietzsche sharpened the knife. It isn't to win — winners produce ressentiment as readily as losers, as the maximalists prove. It's to catch the impulse in yourself and refuse to crown it. When you find yourself moralizing about money — "the rich are greedy," "the poor are fools" — stop and ask the fox's question, which is also the confessional one: am I stating a real principle, or taking revenge on grapes I couldn't reach?
You won't always like the answer. But the person who can ask it honestly is neither the
resentful fox nor the sneering victor. He can look straight at what he wants, admit he wants it, and either go get it or let it go — without needing to poison it on the way past. "Vengeance is mine," said the Lord — which, read one way, is simply this: put the revenge down. It was never yours to disguise as virtue.
That clarity — wanting what you want without dressing your success or your failure up as someone else's sin — may be the rarest freedom in this whole series. No money can give it to you. Nothing can, except the willingness to catch yourself in the act.

The Languages No Money Can Buy
Gary Chapman said love has to be translated into a form the other person can receive. Money is one of those forms — which is why fixing the money tempts us to keep mistaking it for the message.
Gary Chapman noticed something, counseling couples, that explained a strange kind of misery: two people who genuinely loved each other, and both felt unloved. Not because the love was missing — because it wasn't being received. One partner showed love by doing the dishes and fixing the car; the other needed to hear it said out loud. The love was real. The translation failed.
His idea — the five love languages — is that care has to be spoken in a form the other person can actually take in. And here's why it belongs in a publication about money: money sits right in the middle of that translation. Not as love itself — let's be clear from the start. Money doesn't love you and never will. But money carries care from one person to another, across distance and time. Which means a broken money can quietly corrupt the care it carries. Let me show you how — and then show you why fixing it is a subtler trap than it looks.
The five, and what money does to them
Chapman's five languages are simple: words of affirmation, acts of service, gifts, quality time, and physical touch. Run each one through money.
Gifts is the obvious one, and the trap. A gift is meant to be care made visible — thought, effort, sacrifice, the message I saw you, I know you. Fiat quietly turns the gift into a transaction: the frictionless purchase, the algorithm-suggested present bought in ten seconds, care outsourced to a card. And the consumer economy wants you to speak love in gifts, because gifts can be sold to you. It's the Ben Franklin problem — buying the thing instead of doing the deed drains the bond. A gift chosen by no one really thinking of you carries no care. It only looks like it does.
Quality time is the one that can't be bought or faked — pure, unforgeable presence. And it's exactly what the feed and the fiat treadmill steal: attention shattered, everyone working longer to outrun a decaying currency, in the room but in the phone. You cannot be with your child while the feed is harvesting you.
Acts of service is where helping lives — care as flow, the favor freely given. Fiat pushes you to pay for service, an anonymous transaction that builds no bond; the sovereign,
skill-based life lets you perform it, care made useful with your own hands.
Words and touch money can't reach at all — and that's the tell. The languages that need no money are precisely the ones that can't be debased, faked, or sold. They're the base layer of human care, and no currency ever touches them.
Money is a medium for care
Chapman's real insight lines up with everything on this page: love must be translated into a form the other person can receive, and money is one of those forms — a medium for transmitting care across distance and time. When you provide for a family, send help to someone far away, or leave something for the next generation, you're using money as a carrier of care.
Which is the frame of this whole publication: fiat is a corrupted medium, and Bitcoin an honest one — for value, and therefore for the care that value carries. Fiat degrades every language it touches. Bitcoin, paired with value-for-value, could let care travel honestly: a gift that's a real sacrifice of your own stored time, service paid at its true worth, support sent directly with no platform skimming a cut of the love.
And that is exactly where the danger begins.
The harder edge: fixing the medium makes the trap worse
Here's what almost no one in this space will tell you. Making money an honest carrier of care doesn't reduce the temptation to mistake money for love. It increases it.
Think it through. When the money is obviously broken — inflating, transactional, untrustworthy — you at least know not to confuse it with the real thing. Nobody believes a debasing fiat gift card is love. The corruption is a kind of accidental protection; the medium is so plainly cheap that it can't impersonate the message for long.
But make the medium honest, precious, hard-won — a genuine sacrifice of stored time — and it becomes the perfect counterfeit of care. Now the gift really did cost you something. Now sending value really is a small sacrifice. And so it becomes terribly easy to believe you have loved someone when all you have done is transmit value to them honestly. The better the money gets at carrying care, the more convincingly it can be substituted for care — and the substitution gets harder to detect precisely because the money is now real, not fake.
This is the low-time-preference person's specific trap, and it's worth naming because it's the one most likely to catch the readers of this newsletter. You are disciplined. You provide. You stack sacrifice for your family's future. And you can do all of that flawlessly
while being completely absent — speaking fluent, honest, sound-money "provision" to people who are starving for the two languages money can't buy. The man who gets the money perfectly right is often the man most convinced he has therefore gotten love right. He has confused a flawless carrier with the thing it was supposed to carry.
Fiat corrupts the message by cheapening the medium. Sound money threatens the message a subtler way — by making the medium good enough to pass for the message. One tempts you to send junk. The other tempts you to send gold and call it presence. And gold is far more convincing.
The one line to keep
Love has to be translated into a form the other person can receive, and money is one of those forms. Fiat corrupts every language it carries. Sound money lets care travel honestly again — and in doing so, becomes the most convincing possible impostor of the care it was only ever meant to carry.
Because the languages that matter most — words, touch, time, the deed done by your own hand — were never for sale in any currency, sound or broken. No money reaches them. And the better your money gets, the more quietly certain you'll become that it does.
So fix the medium. Then be suspicious of exactly how good it feels to provide — and go say the words, give the time, and be, actually, there. That was always the part no money could buy. It's also the only part that was ever really love — and honest money will lie to you about that more sweetly than fiat ever could.

The Donkey That Starved
A hungry donkey stands exactly between two identical piles of hay — and starves. The old paradox is really about the one thing reason can't do, and the one thing AI, fiat, and sovereignty all turn on.
Picture a donkey, very hungry, placed exactly halfway between two haystacks. Same size. Same distance. Same everything. The donkey looks left. It looks right. It finds no reason to prefer one over the other — because there is no reason; the two are identical.
So it stands there. And it starves to death, between two meals that would have saved it.
This is Buridan's Ass, a thought experiment that's haunted philosophy for seven centuries. It sounds like a joke about a stupid animal. It's actually a knife aimed at something we quietly worship — pure reason — and it cuts straight through AI, money, and what sovereignty really demands of you.
What the paradox actually means
The donkey isn't stupid. The donkey is perfectly rational — and that's exactly the problem.
If you decide only by reasons, and the reasons are perfectly balanced, you are paralyzed. There's no logical tiebreaker, so a purely logical mind simply freezes. The paradox exposes the limit of reason itself: reason can evaluate options, but it cannot, on its own, choose between equal ones. Something else has to do that.
Philosophers gave that something a name: the will. The capacity to just pick — to break the tie by an act of choosing rather than by finding one more reason. Spinoza's verdict was blunt: a human being who actually starved that way would be "an ass, not a man." His point was that we do break ties, constantly, effortlessly — and that the ability to do so is not reason. It's will.
You can also state it in modern terms: paralysis by analysis. Choice overload. Too many equal options don't liberate you — they freeze you. Hold that, because the modern world runs on it.
AI is Buridan's Ass
Here's the sharp, timely part. The closest thing to Buridan's Ass ever built is artificial intelligence.
An AI is pure reason with no will. Give it genuinely equal options and it has no self, no preference, no gut, no "I just want this one" — only the reasons. And with the reasons tied, it has, in principle, nothing to move it.
So look at what we actually do to make it work: we inject randomness. The settings that make an AI usable — temperature, sampling, random seeds — are, at bottom, a dice-roll bolted onto the machine so it doesn't freeze between two equal haystacks. Read that again, because it's the tell. The thing a human child does without thinking — just pick one — is the thing the pure-reason machine cannot do without a crutch. We literally engineer chance into it to give it the one thing it lacks: a way to break the tie.
And the deeper warning, straight from the essay on the cow and the machine: if we hand our decisions to a system that has reasons but no will, we've outsourced choosing itself to something that, at the most fundamental level, cannot actually want anything.
Fiat manufactures donkeys
The modern economy produces Buridan's Asses on purpose, and profits from every one.
It floods you with near-identical options — the choice overload from the essay on streaming money — until deciding becomes exhausting. And a paralyzed chooser does one of two convenient things: stays frozen (keeps scrolling, keeps consuming, never commits), or gratefully hands the decision to the algorithm that offers to "choose for you." Either way, someone else is now steering.
Paralysis, it turns out, is profitable. A frozen consumer is a managed consumer. The haystacks are multiplied deliberately, so that you'll either never move — or let the platform walk you to the pile it prefers.
Bitcoin is a bet on the will
Now the resolution, and it's cleaner than you'd expect.
Bitcoin is, underneath everything, a wager on will over pure reason. "Don't trust, verify" gets you the reasons — all of them, checkable, in the open. But verification is not the end. At some point you have to act: take self-custody, hold, commit, bear the full consequence yourself. The competence knife that runs through these essays is really this demand — sovereignty requires not just the reason to evaluate a choice, but the will to make it and own it.
Fiat lets you defer forever — someone will bail you out, the state will decide, the algorithm will pick. Bitcoin forces the donkey to move. There is no one to break the tie for you.
Even the hard cap is a resolved tie. Twenty-one million was never reasoned to as the uniquely optimal number — you could argue supply schedules until you starve. It was chosen, and fixed — an act of will that ended the infinite deliberation. A rule you stop arguing about and simply commit to, so you can finally eat.
The harder edge
But here's the uncomfortable truth about our moment. We are not starving between the haystacks like the old donkey. We're doing something that may be worse: we're happily letting the machine walk us to one.
The feed picks what we read. The recommender picks what we watch and buy. The AI picks the answer. And with each handoff, the muscle atrophies a little more — the will, the raw capacity to choose under uncertainty and own it, gets weaker from disuse. That's the real threat, and it's the deepest one in this whole series. We've talked about outsourcing your money, your attention, your verification. Outsourcing your will is the one underneath all of them — because will was the thing doing the choosing in every case.
A civilization that forgets how to break its own ties doesn't starve dramatically between two haystacks. It just quietly stops walking on its own, and lets itself be led — and eventually forgets it ever could have walked.
The one line to keep
The donkey starves not from lack of hay, but from lack of will — from waiting for reason to break a tie that reason can never break.
That's the AI, pure reason with a dice-roll bolted on so it can move. That's the fiat consumer, paralyzed by manufactured choice and glad to let the algorithm decide. And it's the deepest demand of sovereignty: verify all you like, but in the end, you must choose, and you must own it.
More reasons will never feed the donkey. More information won't. A better haystack won't. Only a step will.
So take it. Under uncertainty, with the reasons tied and no one coming to decide for you — that willingness to move anyway, and to own where you land, is not a flaw in your rationality. It's the thing that keeps you alive, and the thing that keeps you free.

The Cords You're Cutting
Every essay in this series argued for severing the ties that bind you. A show in Brussels — and an old anthropologist — make the case that the ties were the point.
In a converted brewery in Brussels right now, there's an exhibition about debt. Not debt as a number on a statement — debt as a physical thing. Large silvery inflatables that slowly breathe in and out, one of them shaped to fit around the artist's pregnant body, titled as a set of meditations on property. Reprinted labor contracts from factory workers whose agreements ended overnight when a country reunified, leaving them stranded. Casts of the empty ground between two properties — the negative space nobody owns.
The show is called Call me gravity, and its whole premise is a quiet question: who owes whom, and why?
I've spent this entire series arguing that the answer should be no one. And standing in front of this idea, I have to admit something: it might be wrong. Or at least, it might be leaving out the most important half.
Let me explain, because this is the argument against everything I've written.
The story I've been telling you about debt
In every essay so far, debt has been the villain.
It was the rentier's leverage, the mechanism that lets owners collect from workers. It was the calendar's tax on your savings, the reason fiat rots. It was the trap in the phrase only with debt can you live; without debt you survive. Debt, in my telling, is a form of domination — a cord that ties you to a creditor who has power over you. And Bitcoin's promise was always the scissors: sound money you can save, so you never have to mortgage your future or bow to a lender again.
That story is true. But it turns out to be a story with an author, and the author had a thesis.
The story the anthropologists tell
Here's the other one, and it's older and stranger.
We're taught that money was invented to fix barter — that once upon a time people swapped chickens for shoes, found it clumsy, and invented coins to smooth the trade. The anthropologist David Graeber spent a career pointing out that this never actually happened. There's no evidence of a barter economy anywhere that later invented money. What came first, in real human societies, was debt — webs of "I owe you," obligations tracked in memory and honor long before any coin existed.
Before money, in other words, there was owing. Communities ran on it. You helped raise my barn; I owe you. I share my catch; you'll share yours. The debt was never meant to be cleanly settled — that was the point. An unpaid, ongoing obligation is exactly what keeps two people in relation. Settle up completely and you're strangers again.
Go back further, to Marcel Mauss and his study of gift economies, and you find the deepest version. A gift is never free. It creates a bond, an obligation to reciprocate, a thread that now runs between giver and receiver. Debt, in this light, isn't the chain that enslaves you. It's the thread that ties you to other people. The curator of the Brussels show puts it almost unbearably simply: to be in debt can mean that you carry something of the other person inside you.
Owing is belonging
Sit with that, because it flips the whole series on its head.
If the anthropologists are right, then debt isn't primarily domination. It's connection. To owe someone is to be bound to them. To be owed is to have a claim on someone — to matter to them. A community is, quite literally, a network of people who owe each other things and never fully settle up. The mutual, unpayable obligation is the society.
Which means the villain of my series has been doing a second job the whole time. Yes, debt can be the landlord's whip. But the same cord, seen from the other end, is the thing that makes you part of a "we" instead of a lone "I." Owing is belonging.
And now look at what Bitcoin actually promises to cut.
What the scissors actually cut
Bitcoin's dream is the sovereign individual: someone who owes nothing, depends on no one, holds their wealth by their own key, and can walk away from any institution at will. Freedom from debt. Freedom from obligation. Freedom from dependency.
But run that dream all the way out and look at where it lands. A world where no one owes anyone is also a world where no one has anyone. Freedom from obligation is freedom from each other. The perfectly sovereign individual — beholden to no creditor, no state,
no bank, no platform, no one — has cut every cord, and a person who has cut every cord is not held by anything. Including anyone.
This is the thing the keys can't give you. You can engineer non-domination. You cannot engineer belonging — because belonging is made of the very obligation that nondomination removes. They're the same cord. Cut it to free yourself from the creditor, and you've also cut yourself free from the community. There's no version of the scissors that snips only the bad half.
The honest problem
The series keeps arriving at one ancient line, and here it is again, sharper than ever. Aristotle said the being who is truly self-sufficient, who needs no one, is either a beast or a god — never a human, because humans are the creatures made for mutual need.
Every essay I've written has been quietly arguing for the beast-or-god end of that spectrum. Own your money, own your voice, owe nothing, depend on no one, exit anything. And the whole time, there was a room in Brussels — and a shelf of anthropology behind it — insisting that the cords I was teaching you to cut are not the cage. They're the thing that makes you a person among persons rather than a sovereign alone with his keys.
I don't think this dissolves the case for Bitcoin. Domination is real; the rentier is real; a money you can't be debased out of is a genuine good. But I no longer think the sovereignty story is complete, and I think the incompleteness is exactly the part it's least honest about. It sells you freedom from. It goes quiet on what you're also freeing yourself of.
The one line to keep
So here's where I actually land, which is at a fork rather than a finish.
Debt is a chain and debt is a thread, and it is the same debt. To owe can mean to be owned — and it can mean to belong. The entire promise of self-sovereign money is to free you from the first meaning. Its unadvertised cost is that it can quietly starve you of the second.
A world where no one owes anyone is a world where no one has anyone. Whether that reads to you as liberation or as the loneliest sentence ever written is, I suspect, the truest test of what you actually want from money — and from a life.
I've spent six essays handing you the scissors. This one is just me pointing at what's on the other end of the cord, and admitting I'm not sure it should be cut.

The Bounty on Dead Cobras
Goodhart's Law is the reason the rules around you are strange — and the reason Satoshi's real genius was never scarcity.
The British, running colonial Delhi, had a snake problem. Too many venomous cobras in the city. So they did the sensible administrative thing: they put a bounty on dead cobras. Bring in a dead snake, collect a coin.
It worked, at first. Then it stopped working, in a way nobody saw coming. Enterprising locals started breeding cobras — why hunt dangerous wild snakes when you can farm them for guaranteed income? When the government caught on and scrapped the bounty, the breeders had a warehouse of now-worthless cobras on their hands. So they let them go. Delhi ended up with more cobras than before it started.
That's the Cobra Effect, and once you can see it, you'll see it everywhere — including, in two very different ways, inside Bitcoin.
The law nobody in charge remembers
There's a rule underneath the cobra story, and an economist named Charles Goodhart put it plainly: the moment you turn a measure into a target, it stops measuring what you wanted.
Say it in blunt human terms and it's even sharper. You don't get the behavior you want. You get the behavior you measure.
Watch it operate:
Measure a call-center worker by how many calls they close, and you get short calls customers hurried off the line, problems half-solved. Measure a programmer by lines of code written, and you get bloated, padded software, because now length is the reward. Measure police by number of arrests, and you get arrests — plenty of them, aimed at whatever's easiest to arrest, which is not the same thing as justice.
And the cruelest one. Rank a hospital by its survival rate, and it will quietly start turning away the sickest patients. Not because the surgeons are monsters — because the number rewards it. Take the hard cases and your rate drops. Refuse them and you climb the league table. The measure, meant to reward good care, now punishes it.
Here's the part worth stopping on. Every incentive you have ever been handed — at
work, in school, by your government — was designed by someone who forgot this law. And most people walk through their whole lives sensing the rules around them are subtly perverse without ever knowing why. It isn't because they're not clever. It's because no one ever handed them the lens.
Consider this the lens.
Money forgot it too
Now point the lens at money itself, because fiat runs on Goodharted numbers.
A healthy economy used to show up as a rising GDP. So GDP became the target — and once it was the target, you could juice it with debt, with spending that builds nothing lasting, with activity that looks like growth and isn't. The measure detached from the health it was supposed to track.
Or take inflation. We measure it with an index, then set a target for that index. So the index gets reweighted, adjusted, massaged — and people watch the official number stay calm while the actual cost of their actual life climbs. The measure became the target, and stopped telling the truth. Classic cobra.
This is the world Bitcoin walks into. And here's where it gets genuinely interesting.
The room the cobra can't enter
Everyone thinks Satoshi's breakthrough was scarcity — the fixed 21 million. It wasn't. Plenty of things are scarce. The real breakthrough was designing a measure you cannot game.
Bitcoin secures itself through proof of work: to add to the ledger, you must burn real energy, real computation. And notice what that does to the Cobra Effect. In every example above, the measure and the goal came apart — you could hit the number without doing the real thing. Close the call without solving the problem. Pump GDP without building wealth.
Proof of work welds them shut. The metric — energy expended — is the goal — security. You cannot fake the number without actually doing the work, because the number is nothing but a receipt for the work. There's no cobra to breed here, no shortcut, no way to satisfy the measure while betraying its purpose. The measure can't be gamed because the measure and the thing itself are the same object.
That is the rarest thing in all of institutional design: an incentive built by someone who did not forget Goodhart's Law. One small, airtight room the cobra cannot get into.
But the rest of the house is full of snakes
And now the honest half, because Bitcoin does not banish the Cobra Effect. It builds one cobra-proof room inside a house where the snakes breed as freely as ever everywhere you step outside that hard core.
Measure success by price — "number go up" — and watch what the culture optimizes for. Not sovereignty, not sound money, but the number. You get speculation, leverage, a thousand copycat coins promising a bigger number, and a movement that starts mistaking a rising chart for a mission accomplished. The measure ate the purpose. (If that sounds familiar, it's the cobra wearing the robes of the faith I wrote about a few essays back.)
Measure adoption by exchange volume, and you reward exactly the thing Bitcoin was built to escape — coins piling up on custodial platforms, banks quietly rebuilt one layer up, because the metric counts activity, not self-custody.
Measure decentralization by node count, and people spin up cheap, hollow nodes that flatter the statistic without spreading any real power. Measure security by hashrate alone, and mining stampedes toward the cheapest energy on earth and clumps into a handful of pools — the number goes up while the thing the number was supposed to protect quietly narrows.
Same law, every time. The instant a human or a market can hit the number without doing the real thing, they will — and Bitcoin's core is the only place where that gap has been engineered shut. Everywhere the code stops and people begin, the cobra is back in business.
The one line to keep
So here's the whole thing.
The Cobra Effect isn't a quirk. It's a law of gravity for institutions, and nearly every rule you live under is bent by it — designed by someone who forgot that you get the behavior you measure, not the behavior you want.
Bitcoin's quiet triumph is that its heart is the one incentive in modern life that remembered. Proof of work is a measure you can't game, and that's the actual miracle bigger than scarcity, bigger than the price.
Its quiet danger is that everything around that heart — the price, the exchanges, the culture, the vanity metrics — is as vulnerable to the cobra as any hospital league table. The protocol is Goodhart-proof. The people are not.
Which leaves you with the only real skill here, and it's the lens itself: for any rule, any target, any number someone hands you, ask the one question almost no one asks what does this measure actually reward, once people start gaming it? Ask it of your job, your metrics, your money, and your Bitcoin.
Most people never get handed that question. You just were.

Cult, Religion, or Honest Money?
Bitcoin gets called a cult, and the accusation is half right. The mythology is cultish. The mistake is thinking the mythology is the money.
Look at Bitcoin from the outside and it's easy to see a religion. There are prophets — a pseudonymous founder who vanished, leaving scripture behind. There are the faithful, with laser eyes and a doctrine of salvation through a rising number. There are heretics, schisms, holy wars over block size. There is even an eschatology: hyperbitcoinization, the end of days when the old money burns and the believers inherit the earth.
The critics who point at all this and say "cult" are not hallucinating. That layer is real, and it is embarrassing, and it deserves the mockery it gets. But they make one error, and it is the error that this whole essay is about: they mistake the congregation for the cathedral. They think the mythology is the money. It isn't. And once you separate the two cleanly, most of the "cult" charge falls away — while the part that survives turns out to be an indictment of the believers, not the thing they believe in.
The tool that makes virtue unnecessary
Start with what the protocol actually is, stripped of everyone worshipping it.
Bitcoin's founding instruction is four words: don't trust, verify. People hear this as advice about being careful. It's something far more radical. It is a confession — a design admission that nobody in the system can be trusted, and that the system is built to work anyway. Not the miners, not the developers, not the whales, not Satoshi. Everyone is assumed to be a potential crook, and the machinery settles honestly regardless, because the rules are checked by each participant rather than vouched for by any authority.
That is the opposite of a church. A church needs you to trust the priest, the doctrine, the good faith of the institution. Bitcoin needs you to trust none of it. A tool that required saints to operate it would just be another institution asking for your faith — which is precisely the thing sound money was invented to escape.
So here is the tell for the whole debate. The moment you tie the coin's merit to the virtue of the people who hold it, you have made the un-Bitcoin move. You've
smuggled the priest back into a system engineered specifically to fire him. Whether the holders are wise or greedy, generous or insufferable, has exactly nothing to do with whether the ledger settles. Coupling the two is a category error — and, ironically, it is an error committed by critics and maximalists alike. One side says the coin is bad because early holders got rich unfairly; the other says the coin is holy because its holders are enlightened. Both are grading the tool by the character of the hands holding it. Both are wrong for the same reason.
Early allocation is not clean — and doesn't need to be
Let me concede the strongest version of the critique, because dodging it is what cultists do.
Bitcoin's early distribution was not morally clean. It rewarded conviction, luck, and being strange enough to point a CPU at an obscure client in 2009. A tiny number of people ended up holding a great deal because they were early, not because they were deserving. That is a real inequality, and pretending otherwise is cope.
But "unfair" is a comparison, and it demands a baseline: unfair compared to what? There was no premine skimmed for insiders. No venture round that let the connected in before the public. No gatekeeper deciding who was allowed to participate. The code was public from the first day, and anyone on earth with a computer could have mined. That is not the same as morally clean — it is permissionlessly open, and those two things get conflated constantly by people who should know better.
The distinction matters because only one of them is a property a protocol can actually deliver. No neutral rule can hand out a "morally deserved" distribution; deserving isn't a quantity a machine can measure. What a protocol can guarantee is that the door was open to everyone on identical terms. Bitcoin cleared that bar completely. Critics who won't accept it are usually holding it against an ideal distribution that has never existed for any money in human history — not gold, not the dollar, not a single currency ever issued. Judged against a fantasy, everything fails. Judged against every real alternative, "open to anyone, gatekept by no one" is the fairest launch money has had.
Tools don't need saints
This is the line I keep coming back to, and it's the heart of it: tools don't need saints.
Nobody asks whether the inventor of fire was a good man, or whether the first people to smelt iron deserved the advantage it gave them. A hammer drives a nail in a sinner's hand exactly as well as in a saint's. The printing press spread bibles and blood libel with equal fidelity, and its usefulness was never a referendum on the virtue of early printers. We judge a tool by whether it works, whether the door to using it is open, and what it lets people do — not by the moral biography of whoever picked it up first.
Bitcoin is a tool. Its truth-value lives in the code and the network — twenty-one million, enforced by every node, verifiable by anyone. That truth is completely indifferent to whether the person holding a coin is admirable. Demanding that the holders be worthy before you'll respect the money is like demanding the early adopters of the wheel be philosophers before you'll admit it rolls.
What the three words in the title actually mean
The title asks whether Bitcoin is a cult, a religion, or honest money. The three are separable by a single axis: how much they ask you to trust.
A cult asks you to trust a person — the leader, the founder, the voice that must not be questioned. A religion asks you to trust a doctrine — the scripture, the promise, the story about how it all ends. Honest money asks you to trust nothing. It hands you the rules and says: check them yourself. Don't take my word. Don't take Satoshi's. Run the node.
By that measure, most of what gets called "the Bitcoin cult" is real — but it is a cult that has grown around honest money, the way barnacles grow on a hull. The laser eyes, the founder-worship, the salvation narrative where the number rising redeems you: all of that is a religion, and it is a liability, not an asset. It is hope-selling — the exact thing sound money was supposed to abolish. Hope with a price tag is what fiat does, what the wrinkle cream does, what every institution asking for faith does. The moment Bitcoin's case rests on believing in Satoshi's sainthood or the holders' righteousness, it has quietly rebuilt the church it was meant to replace. The religion doesn't strengthen the honest-money claim. It corrodes it, by dragging the whole argument back to faith in people.
The good news is that the money doesn't need the religion. Strip away every prophet and every laser eye and the protocol settles exactly the same. That's the point of it. It was built to survive its own believers.
Keep the coin and the congregation apart
None of this is a defense of the mythology. It's the opposite — an argument for amputating it. The strongest thing you can say about Bitcoin is also the most deflating to its evangelists: the tool works, and the holders are just people who were early. Some were wise, some were lucky, some are unbearable. It does not matter. The ledger doesn't check their character before it clears a block, and neither should you.
Honest money is, in the end, the one kind that can survive its own worst adherents because it never asked you to trust them in the first place. Keep the coin separate from the congregation. Judge the protocol by whether it works and whether the door was open. Judge the mythology by how much it smells like the priesthood we were trying to leave.
Don't trust. Verify. That was never a slogan. It was a boundary — the line between honest money and everything else that has ever asked for your faith.

Agreed — and you’re pointing right at the fault line.
The protocol’s whole genius is that it makes virtue unnecessary. “Don’t trust, verify” isn’t advice about being careful; it’s the admission that nobody in the system is trustworthy and it works anyway. A tool that needed saints would just be another church. Bitcoin’s actual flex is that it runs on the assumption everyone’s a crook — Satoshi included — and still settles.

The Right to Your Own Nose
Stirner, Godwin, and the anarchist question hiding in your Bitcoin wallet: what makes anyone’s rule over you rightful — and what happens when a money finally answers, “no one’s”?
Touch your nose. It’s yours — obviously. Now try to prove you have a right to it.
You’ll find you can’t, and that the demand is faintly ridiculous. You don’t hold your own face by anyone’s permission. That small absurdity was the opening move of one of the strangest, sharpest books in philosophy — and it runs, by a surprisingly straight line, to the money in your wallet.
Because every serious argument for anarchism, and every serious argument for Bitcoin, is really an argument about a single word. Not power. Legitimacy. The claim that someone’s rule over you is rightful.
Let me build it up.
The philosopher who called rights ghosts
Max Stirner, writing in 1844. His target wasn’t this or that government. It was right itself — the whole idea.
Stirner had a word for the abstractions people kneel to: ghosts. God, reason, nature, humanity, society, “the rights of all” — each one an invented thing we treat as sacred and then let rule us as if it were real. A right, to Stirner, is just such a ghost: a phantom we grant authority over our own lives.
His sharpest example was censorship. A court declares something forbidden, and we’re told to accept the verdict as right. But notice the trick, he says. The verdict only counts as right if you already accept the court’s authority to pronounce it. The legitimacy proves itself with itself. It’s a closed circle: the censor is right because the censor says so.
So Stirner throws out right entirely. What’s left when you do? Two plain things: might and ownness. What you have in your power is your own — not because anyone granted it, but because you can hold it. Property isn’t a right handed down by an authority. It’s simply what you keep. And the state, in this view, can never truly tolerate the person who values himself above it. In place of the “sacred” society that has claims over you, Stirner offers something colder and freer: a union of egoists. A voluntary association you use for your own ends and can walk out of at any time — one that owns you not at all.
The one line that broke the social contract
Now the tradition Stirner was blowing up.
Locke and Rousseau are the great architects of legitimate authority — the thinkers who tried to make the state rightful by rooting it in you. Locke grounds government in natural rights plus your consent, even the “tacit” kind: you used the roads, so you’ve agreed. Rousseau grounds it in the general will, a collective self-rule so complete it can, in his chilling phrase, force you to be free. Both make the same move. The state rules you rightfully because, at some level, you agreed.
Then William Godwin, 1793, sets a charge under the whole structure with one observation. If government rests on the consent of the people — yet claims power over the very man who refuses his consent — then consent was never the real foundation. It was force wearing consent’s costume. The one person who says no exposes the fiction for everyone.
That sentence is the birth of philosophical anarchism. No authority can be made rightful over someone who withholds their agreement. Consent that binds the unwilling isn’t consent at all.
So what is anarchism, actually
Not chaos. That’s the slander that lets people skip the argument.
The word means without a ruler — not without order. And it’s really two moves stacked together.
The first is the negative one all these thinkers perform: demolish every excuse for rightful coercive authority. Rights are ghosts (Stirner); consent can’t bind the refuser (Godwin). Strip away the legitimations and rule stands revealed as simply force that has talked its way into respectability.
The second is a wager: that order can arise without a ruler — through voluntary, selfinterested, dissolvable association rather than command.
But anarchism splits hard on one question, and you need to see the split before we get to Bitcoin. The question is property. The individualist wing — Stirner, and much later the anarcho-capitalists — says: abolish the state, keep property, and you’re free. The communist wing — Proudhon, Bakunin, Kropotkin, with Rousseau’s shadow behind them (“the first man who fenced a field and said this is mine began all our misery”) — says the opposite: property itself is the domination, and a propertied order without a state is just private tyranny with better branding.
Hold that fault line. It reopens the instant you say the word Bitcoin.
The anarchist machine in your pocket
Here’s where it stops being a seminar.
Bitcoin is without a ruler by construction. No issuer. No administrator. No one who can print it, freeze it, or reverse it. It is the first large-scale monetary order that coordinates millions of people with no sovereign at the center — not as a manifesto, but as a system that has been quietly running for years. Whatever else it is, it’s the strongest evidence anarchism has ever produced for its central claim: that rule is not necessary for order.
But which anarchism? This is the part worth slowing down for.
Bitcoin is Stirner made literal. Your seed phrase is the purest ownness that has ever existed. You hold your coins by might, not by right — by control of a key, not by a title some court agrees to honor. The chain does not recognize rights. It recognizes keys. It doesn’t know the word “deserve” and it doesn’t know the word “entitled.” It knows who can sign.
Which means the Bitcoiner who thunders “I have a natural right to my property” is smuggling back the exact ghost Stirner spent a whole book exorcising — and the protocol does not have his back. The protocol backs whoever holds the key. Cryptography is Stirner’s ownness with the metaphysics stripped clean out.
The network itself looks a lot like his union of egoists. Miners, nodes, and holders each chase their own naked self-interest. Nobody participates out of duty or for a sacred cause. Order falls out of the intersection of all that selfishness — and you can join or leave whenever you like, owing nothing to anyone.
And Godwin’s dissenter, at last, gets what philosophy could only assert on paper: an actual exit. You can refuse your consent to the monetary regime — the debasement, the surveillance, the controls — and genuinely withdraw from it. The refused consent stops being a paradox in a book. It becomes a transaction.
The honest limits
Now the part the true believers skip. This is anarchy of money, nested inside a world still ruled by the territorial state. Taxation, jurisdiction, the very real wrench that can be used to extract your seed phrase — none of it is touched. Bitcoin is an anarchic enclave in one layer of life, not anarchy achieved. Anyone selling it to you as the end of the state is selling salvation, and you’ve read what I think of salvation stories.
And that property fault line? Bitcoin doesn’t resolve it. It just picks a side, hard — the individualist one. Whether a stateless order built on pure, absolute property is freedom or simply a new private tyranny is exactly the question the communist anarchists raised two centuries ago. Bitcoin doesn’t answer it. It just runs, and lets you find out.
The trap, and the one line to keep
Here’s the warning Stirner would hand you personally, and it loops back to a question I keep circling: don’t let “the protocol” become your new ghost.
The 21 million cap, “the code,” “consensus” — treated as sacred, inviolable, beyond question — that is a fixed idea too. A god of math you could end up kneeling before exactly as your ancestors knelt before the state and the church. Godwin dreamed of reason ruling in place of men. The live danger is that you escape the rule of rulers only to enthrone the rule of code as the newest holy cause that owns you.
So, the whole thing in one breath:
Anarchism was never the belief that no one should hold power. It’s the refusal to pretend that power over the unconsenting is rightful — joined to a bet that order doesn’t need a ruler. For two hundred years, that bet was only words.
Bitcoin is the first place it’s actually running. Stirner’s ownness and Godwin’s exit, compiled into cryptography. Not the whole of freedom — only the money — and only until the day you start worshipping the code instead of the ghost it was built to replace.
The chain doesn’t recognize your rights. It recognizes your keys.
Sit with why that might be the most anarchist sentence ever written into a machine.

The
communist wing — Proudhon, Bakunin, Kropotkin, with Rousseau’s shadow behind them (“the first man who fenced a field and said this is mine began all our misery”) — says the opposite: property itself is the domination, and a propertied order without a state is just private tyranny with better branding.

The word "सत्" (Sat) in Sanskrit translates to "truth," "being," "existence," or "reality" in English. It is a fundamental concept in Indian philosophy, often signifying the absolute or the essence of existence. #BITCOIN has 100000000 #Sats ⚓️ in time!!
