Sometimes, the best way to understand Bitcoin is to go back to the fundamentals.

Here are some of our key takeaways:
🔑 Your private keys are what give you control.
Bitcoin isn’t stored inside your wallet. Your wallet holds the keys that allow you to authorize transactions. Whoever controls the private keys controls the Bitcoin.

🌱 Your seed phrase is the backup to your wallet.
It can be used to generate your wallet’s private keys and recover access to your funds. That makes protecting it extremely important. A seed phrase should never be shared, photographed, or stored carelessly.

Bitcoin nodes independently validate transactions and blocks against Bitcoin’s rules. They don't simply trust miners or another central authority. Anyone can run a node and independently verify what is happening on the network.

Miners compete to add new blocks to Bitcoin’s blockchain through Proof-of-Work. This makes rewriting Bitcoin’s history increasingly expensive and difficult.

🤝 No single component secures Bitcoin alone.
Private keys provide ownership. Wallets help users manage those keys. Nodes verify the rules. Miners provide Proof-of-Work and secure the chain. And users independently verify and transact according to the network’s rules.

That combination is what makes Bitcoin so resilient.

🔐 And then there is custody.
Understanding Bitcoin is one thing. Understanding how to safely hold it is another.

The moment you move from simply buying Bitcoin to taking responsibility for your own keys, concepts like seed phrases, backups, hardware wallets, transaction verification, and operational security become extremely important.

This is why Bitcoin education matters. You shouldn't have to be a computer scientist before you can understand what you are actually using.

2026 has been a year of proof of work for Africa Free Routing. 🚨

Over the past eight months, developers across Africa have been learning, building and shipping with Bitcoin through our Lightning Developer Bootcamps.

8 bootcamp locations. 10+ cities reached. 200+ developers trained.

From Cape Town and Johannesburg to Kampala, Ouagadougou, Bujumbura, Kisumu and Addis Ababa, developers have run nodes, written code, built Lightning applications, contributed to open source and presented working projects.

The impact has gone beyond the numbers.

🇿🇦 BitDevs Cape Town was established after the Cape Town bootcamp.

🇿🇦 Johannesburg marked our 10th bootcamp milestone, with developers travelling across borders from Mozambique using Bitcoin.

🇺🇬 Kampala saw the launch of the first Bitcoin Club at Makerere University, while a solo female developer placed 2nd in the hackathon.

🇧🇫 Developers in Ouagadougou built and presented Lightning projects.

🇧🇮 Bujumbura reached full capacity, with participants building working Lightning projects.

🇰🇪 Kisumu became our largest bootcamp yet, with ~99 participants, 16 teams and 1 solo builder presenting 17 projects after an overnight build.

🇪🇹 Addis Ababa brought further cross-border participation, including developers from Kisumu.

And the work continues.

Alongside the bootcamps, we launched the Bitcoin Payment Integration Masterclass, helping businesses learn how to integrate Lightning payments into their existing products and platforms.

Some graduates have gone on to contribute to established Bitcoin organisations. Others are building products of their own.

This week, Africa Free Routing is in Kigali, Rwanda, training the next generation of African Lightning developers. 🇷🇼⚡

The work continues. The builders keep building.

Today, we dug into Chapter 10: “Keys to the Code” from Hijacking Bitcoin by Roger Ver and Steve Patterson.

The discussion challenged some of the assumptions we often make about Bitcoin, particularly around decentralization, governance, custody, and who actually has influence over the software we use.

Key takeaways from today’s discussion:

🔹 Bitcoin is a human project.
While the protocol is designed to minimize centralized control, the people and institutions building, maintaining, and using it still matter.

🔹 Bitcoin ≠ Bitcoin Core.
The protocol and the software implementation used to interact with it are not the same thing. Understanding that distinction is important when thinking about Bitcoin governance.

🔹 Open source doesn't automatically mean decentralized.
Anyone can inspect or modify Bitcoin's code, but getting changes accepted into widely used software involves social processes, technical review, and governance.

🔹 Decentralization is about more than the number of developers.
The ability for users to independently verify the rules, run their own nodes, choose implementations, and ultimately reject changes is a critical part of Bitcoin's resilience.

🔹 Self-custody matters.
The chapter also reminded us that Bitcoin's censorship-resistance and confiscation-resistance are strongest when users actually control their own keys rather than relying entirely on custodians.

Most importantly, we don't have to agree with every argument in the book to learn from it. Good Bitcoin education requires questioning assumptions, examining history, and being willing to engage with perspectives we disagree with.
