I don't know if it may help any of you, but one of the things I work on with my therapist is a sort of meditation thing to help with panic attacks. Yeah I know, "proper" meditation is difficult for a lot of neurodiverse people, so I don't do the whole stereotype mantra or stare at a candle thing. I just do what works for me:<li><p>Reduce physical stimulus - curl up in a comfortable position in a dark room with a plushie or pet (if she's in a chill mood today)</p></li><li><p>Reduce mental stimulus - zoom my brain as far into the "now" as I can. Just keep telling myself: For right now, in this moment, I'm safe. I have today's food in my cabinet. There's something soft in my arms. It's comfortable and dark. I'm petting a soft thing. For this moment in time, all of my hierarchy of needs are met. I'm here and it's soft.</p></li><li><p>Leave future problems to future self. Work, the world, money, safety, relationships, whatever else be something that I'll deal with later. For right now, it's just me and comfortable and dark and soft.</p></li><li><p>Just sit with that for as long as I can hold onto it. </p></li><br/><br/>Notice when the mind wanders to problems, thank my anxiety brain for her work in trying to warn me about things and keep us safe, and tell her we'll get to that in a little while. When past trauma comes up, thank her for her work in reminding us of past danger, and say we'll keep that in mind in a few minutes. When ADHD brain starts seeking novelty, thank it and let it focus on a different sensation. A different part of the plushy. The feeling of the pillow. The hum of the fan.
