Yes, they debit from a small amount of bitcoin I keep on the exchange. The taxes get reported in a report that is easy enough to import into TurboTax based on FIFO, but personally I use cointracking.info to be able to do specific lot tax reporting across all holdings and exchanges.

Does using Bitcoin debit or credit cards count? My Coinbase debit card has made living on a Bitcoin standard extremely easy in most places that already accept a Visa card. It’s the same cost the merchant but I’m saving and get rewards in Bitcoin. I’ve avoided the credit card because I don’t want to pay any yearly fee (yet…)

I’m fiscally conservative and socially liberal. I value diversity of people and ideas. I believe in America as a land that encourages immigration but does so legally. I think people who work hard are cool, and people who crave excess consumption are lame. I don’t hate China, or its people — but I think it’s great to compete fairly and disagree with any authoritarian government policy. What party am I? Going to need more info - what is the machine you are using to run the docker? Specify the exact cpu, ram, and disk… typically this type of issue is related to an underperforming machine. Around 88% is probably 2017 data when UTXO size grew, I believe? Not an expert but I also have ran BTCPay server in a docker deployment on a Synology (not very powerful) behind a VPN and it took some time to sync

It is fascinating to watch people who are against others using Bitcoin and stating it doesn’t solve anything. Nobody is forcing Bitcoin adoption… and if this new money makes them feel empowered or happy, who honestly cares? Overall the “tap to stack” NFC bitcoin lightning was successful as an ice breaker, however, it did face some challenges. It never worked properly with Phoenix wallet (no clue why) and my CLN node was pretty slow at making payments — sometimes failing to deliver to Blink wallet (channel issue, perhaps?)
If I do this experiment again, I might opt to use QR codes instead of NFC - it’s simply cheaper and easier for everyone. But NFC was a fun experiment!

I have opened complaints with 国家金融监督管理总局上海监管局 against China Merchant Bank, Bank of China, ICBC, and CGB for failing to allow any personal consumption loans (闪电贷) to China Foreign Permanent Residents.
Maybe one day China will have fair credit lending policies, with regulators that ask banks to uphold the law.

Part of me wonders if I should just switch to an umbrel setup (I finally got it working in Synology!), but I really enjoy getting under the hood and seeing exactly how all of these services work. I also saw that Umbrel doesn’t support BTCPayServer with lightning core (only LND) so that would mean I have to start all my channels over again.

Yesterday I tried to take out a personal consumption loan in China. Getting 300k RMB cash at 3% is a great deal, especially as the U.S. dollar is weakening. As somewhat expected, I was denied from applying for being a foreigner. My permanent resident “green card” did not help - they won’t offer that type of loan to any foreigner regardless of visa or circumstances. My wife (Chinese) took out the loan instead but, for better or worse, I am a kind of “it is the principle that matters” type of guy. There is no concept of fair lending here, and while that is their choice, I have every right to politely disagree.
I went to the regulator (国家金融监督管理总局上海监管局) and opened a complaint. The security guard was a bit baffled to see a foreigner walking up and asking to open a complaint in person, but I managed to explain the issue in Chinese. To their credit, they were incredibly nice and happy to help open the complaint against the bank (probably looks good on their reports to show they helped a foreigner). The bank called back later that night and, again, explained they don’t offer it to foreigners because of their policy.
Just another interesting day living in China. I know some may consider this type of behavior petty and “not a polite guest.” Perhaps. I’ve been here seven years and know it won’t be forever. It’s not all bad experiences, and in fact many parts are quite good. These monetary systems are always a rigged game, and this type of institutional discrimination or bias is likely inherent to every country in their unique ways.

I use @nprofile…wcns in docker to run my own self-custody lightning node on an Intel NUC 10 i7 in the living room. I also use @nprofile…d3u4 to run my own self-custody lndhub that allows my son and myself to maintain separate balances. He has an old cellphone with @nprofile…0ty7 on it to connect and receive his daily allowance if he practices his violin every day. I automatically purchase bitcoin daily on @nprofile…er0h and automatically withdraw to a cold wallet at set increments, but occasionally top up the living room hub if necessary. I hope more parents can share what they are doing.
