What does decimate mean?

I wish people would learn what words mean before using them.

Most people incorrectly think it means something like "suffer sever damage" or "completely destroy".

The original meaning of “decimate” (from Latin decimare / decimatio) is to remove or kill one in every ten (from decem, “ten”). In the Roman army, it was a rare but severe collective punishment applied to units guilty of major offenses. Such as mutiny, mass cowardice, or mass desertion.

How it worked
The offending soldiers (often a cohort, maniple, or larger group) were assembled. Lots were drawn so that roughly one-tenth were selected at random. Those selected were then beaten or clubbed to death (fustuarium) by their own comrades. The survivors typically faced additional humiliation: barley rations instead of wheat, and being forced to camp outside the fortified camp.

My personal opinion is this: Denominationalism within the Christian church runs contrary to Biblical teaching. You either follow Christ or you don't. There is no other criteria that should define being a Christian.

Heresies & secondary issues have divided the church for the last 2000 years. Speaking to the secondary issues, the Bible is very clear about some things while others are not so clear. Salvation is not one of the unclear things. The nature of Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and God The Father is not unclear. The way you should live your life is very clear. These are the primary defining elements of being a follower of Christ. Everything else is either a clarification or a secondary issue. Schisms have happened and denominations have formed over these secondary issues since the very beginning.

Brothers and Sisters this should not be so.

"Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love, being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all." - Eph 4:1-6

We are ambassadors of Christ while we remain here on Earth. We are representatives of the Family of Christ. Jesus said,

"If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. If a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand." - Mark 3:24-25

If our Messiah Himself made it a point to say this then it should be taken seriously!

Paul said,

"And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual men, but as to men of flesh, as to infants in Christ. I gave you milk to drink, not solid food; for you were not yet able to receive it. Indeed, even now you are not yet able, for you are still fleshly. For since there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not fleshly, and are you not walking like mere men? This is something that has weighed heavily on my heart for years. We should be united, not divided. I do not claim any denominational affiliation for just this point. I will not further divide or endorse the division of the church. It breaks my heart that our family is so splintered and broken.

I ask God to heal these fractures and restore our Church Family.

These things are admirable goals. I am not sure how to accomplish them long term in today's world. We should try. They are good targets and steps towards them are steps on the right direction.

The problem is not ultimately the system of governance but rather the nature of the governed. Any system put in place will eventually become corrupted because of those participating in it. This is not defeatist. It is reality.

You can not force faith, but you can force conformity. It would not give salvation, but this is not necessarily a bad thing. What is being forced? "Thou shalt not murder" would be a good example.

It is very easy to shoot ideas full of holes and watch them crash and burn. It is much harder to work towards a solution. A step in the right direction is better than failure to act because the step isn't perfect.

The end of my last thought:
I try to allow for the fact that my limited knowledge and understanding of this world are pale distorted reflections of the God who created me and everything we see. There are things that I don't agree with or completely understand.

I know this though.
God is sovereign over all things. He gives and He takes away for His own, many times, unfathomable reasons.

When Assyria and Babylon smashed Israel, were they under God's direct control? Not by my understanding, yet they still did his will.

When Jesus was killed on the cross, did God force those officials, soldiers, and other people to participate? No. But His will was still done.

When Saul and the Jews persecuted the early Christians, were they directly controlled by God? No. And yet they still pushed the expansion of the church far and wide.

Again delegated authority is not the same as a right. Abusing that authority is wrong.

As its well established, where man's law conflicts with God's law, we must follow God. But that does not mean there will be no consequences for the decision.

True followers of God WILL be persecuted. I pray that I will be willing on that day to follow in my savior's footsteps...

“Government” is always used to describe a person or group, who are assumed to possess rights that we ‘normal’ humans don’t have.

I disagree with this definition. It is not necessary to assume that any kind of government has any kind of "rights". Delegated authority is different from rights. This is a nuanced way to look at things, but definitions matter. One cannot have a meaningful discussion without agreed upon definitions.

What then is Government:
Government is the system or group of people that holds and exercises authority to make and enforce rules for an organized community (such as a state or society).

By this definition, all those groups would be governments. Legitimate? Maybe. It would depend on the circumstance.

Note, that I said an argument could be made. The example i gave of voluntary participation and delegation of personal authority to the governing body does not exist in any meaningful way at scale anywhere in the world today.

An argument can be made against your premise. For instance, I don't believe that a group who voluntarily forms and submitted to a "government" is on inherently anti-Christian. That would exclude church bodies. A Christian group that forms to protect themselves and their property is not by necessity evil. That group would have to Institute some form of governance.

I think this is desirable and should be promoted. This is a good example of my beliefs.

On a more in depth level, there is a reason I believe this.

Neutrality of Law is a Myth
There is a concept that our country was founded on that is inherently flawed. The idea is that structures of government and the laws that support them can be constructed in such a way as to provide equality to the governed through ideological neutrality and lack of bias.

This is not inherently wrong, however, it is an inherently unstable condition that can only be maintained by ideologically neutral administrators, lawmakers, and authority figures. This does not describe any society that has ever existed. While people may act this way in the short term, their underlying nature eventually surfaces and contaminates the neutrality. The Founding Fathers may have been able to suppress their ideological bias for a short time while crafting the documents and initial laws defining our government, but that condition did not last long. Ever since then ideology has crept into the bones of our government.

The problem is that the people who want neutrality are the least likely to seek positions of power and influence. The ideologically driven individual is much more likely to succeed at grasping the reigns of government and consequently leading it in one direction or another. When there is no ideology woven into the structures of law, it creates a power vacuum.

Jerry Pournelle coined a concept called the "iron law of bureaucracy," This concept suggests that in any bureaucracy, those dedicated to the bureaucracy's self-preservation and interests will gain power, while those focused on the bureaucracy's intended goals will lose influence or be eliminated. In essence, the bureaucracy itself becomes the primary goal, rather than the tasks it was designed to accomplish.

I think there is a definite parallel here. The people who set up a neutral government intend for everyone to free to do what they want and just be left alone. They don't try to steer the government in one way or another because that is contrary to their preference. So inevitably the government is led by someone else.

This begs the question:

Should government be explicitly ideologically designed and maintained?

If so, then upon what ideology should the government be built?

And why choose that ideology?

What about separation of church and state? I think this was a misguided statement based on a false assumption of continuity of neutrality of government and moral values in society. It was an assumption based on a naivety I would not expect to find in one of such stature. Thomas Jefferson was attempting to say that the state should not interfere with or require religious practice. This stemmed from the desire to protect personal religious freedom from a tyrannical state. The church of England was a prime example of this marriage of church and state. England collected taxes and part of those taxes went directly to the church. It was fully endorsed and led by the monarch. The statement was not intended to say that the values held by the citizens of the nation should be kept separate from the laws, but rather that the state and the church should be separate entities.

I think that the Founders did not intend for this nation to become what it now is. Most of them believed in the existence of a God even if they did not believe in the Christian God. Most were Protestants, raised in the three largest Christian traditions of colonial America—Anglicanism (John Jay, George Washington, and Edward Rutledge), Presbyterianism (Richard Stockton and the Rev. John Witherspoon), and Congregationalism (John Adams and Samuel Adams). Other Protestant groups included the Society of Friends (Quakers), Lutherans, and the Dutch Reformed. Three Founders—Charles Carroll and Daniel Carroll of Maryland and Thomas Fitzsimmons of Pennsylvania—were of Roman Catholic heritage. Deism was present in the colonies as well but it is hard to be sure who believed this way due to lack of explicit documentation. Any way you look at it, as a general rule, they acknowledge a higher power.

In my opinion, the bedrock that this country was built on is Christian values. I think the founders knew this and everyone understood it. They saw no need to articulate this truth in the documents of our founding, but it is true just the same. This nation that I love has left it's first love and pursued things that are ultimately destructive and wrong. We need to get back to our roots. This was once a Christian nation and needs to be once again.

This question is asked all throughout the world. People ask "why are there so many denominations" and accuse Christians of inconsistencies, intolerance, and many other things. Why is this? The bottom line is that most of the division is not over salvation issues, but rather it is over secondary issues. Thomas Campbell, a well known preacher of the early 19th century said, “Where the Bible/Scriptures speak, we speak; where the Bible/Scriptures are silent, we are silent.” While I do not agree with everything he taught, this gets a big AMEN from me.

The question boils down to: Where is the authority found in Christianity?

Where Does Authority Lie?
Everyone agrees that God is at the top. Therefore Jesus, who is God in the flesh, also has ultimate authority. So, where did he place authority? He left the Apostles in charge.

Jesus holds ultimate authority; He entrusted the foundational teaching and authority to His chosen apostles.

Who qualifies as an Apostle?
● Personally chosen and commissioned by Jesus Christ Himself.

Jesus selected the original Twelve during His earthly ministry (Mark 3:13–19; Luke 6:12–16). He said to them, “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you…” (John 15:16). Paul likewise insists his apostleship came “not from men nor through man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father” (Galatians 1:1; see also Romans 1:1, 5; 1 Timothy 1:1). The replacement for Judas (Matthias) was also understood as chosen by the Lord (Acts 1:24–26).

So, back to the question of Authority, what did Jesus and the Apostles teach? What did they say and do? What rules did they institute? This alone is what we base our faith on. This is what is recorded in the New Testament. Anything else that is taught must align with this already established authority as recorded in the Bible.

The Bible is the Final authority in matters of Christian faith.

● Faith in Jesus Christ

A person must believe / trust in Jesus Christ as the Son of God who died for their sins and rose from the dead.

Repentance and faith are two sides of the same coin: turning from sin and turning to Christ.

Scripture presents salvation as the free gift of God received solely through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. No additional conditions (works of the law, rituals, moral perfection, or human merit) are required to become a Christian. Good works and obedience, including obedience in baptism, follow as the fruit and evidence of genuine saving faith (Ephesians 2:10; James 2:14–26), but they are not the basis or prerequisite for entering salvation.

Everything else that is taught is either explanation of the above or secondary and not required.

Why so much Division?
The fractured nature of Christianity today is not what was intended from the beginning. Denominations have split and formed over arguments about things that are not required by the Bible. Wars have been fought over the same, or at least with that as the justification. Where the scripture is silent, be silent. Do not impose upon fellow Christians what was not imposed by Jesus and the Apostles.

Verses that directly address not dividing over secondary issues
(This is in the context of Gentiles and their former practices vs. Jews and their former practices, but it also applies more broadly)

Romans 14:1 – “As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions.”

Romans 14:3 – “Let not the one who eats despise the one who abstains, and let not the one who abstains pass judgment on the one who eats, for God has welcomed him.”

Romans 14:4 – “Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand.”

Romans 14:10 – “Why do you pass judgment on your brother? Or you, why do you despise your brother? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God.”

Romans 14:12 – “So then each of us will give an account of himself to God.”

These form the core of Paul’s instruction in 14:1–12 against judging or dividing over disputable matters.

There are issues that need to be dealt with at a local level and at the discretion of the local leadership. Some local rules for the governance of the church are to be expected, but don't let them get in the way of what Jesus and His apostles taught. The basis of all of this is Love, just as Jesus said "By this all people will know that you are My disciples: if you have love for one another."

Be a light unto the world, an ambassador of Christ.

There are many things that go into marriage, but one thing that is not normally explicitly articulated is this:

The person you marry is the person you are choosing to spend the worst times of your life with you.

The good times are easy to get through together or alone, but having someone to rely on in the worst times can be a much needed lifeline. This is why the vows say "in good times and bad". It is an acknowledgement that you WILL face tough times. We all do., but a committed married couple is better equipped to survive in bad circumstances.

As a Christian you should also choose someone who believes as you do. This is explicitly stated in the Bible. Don't marry an unbeliever. A believing spouse will help anchor your faith as well as being there for the day to day trials of life.

The Hebrew Word: לֵב (lev or leb)
The word translated as "heart" is lev (לֵב, sometimes appearing as levav or lebab). In biblical Hebrew, this term goes far deeper than the modern English sense of "heart" as the seat of emotions or feelings (like romance or sentiment).

Lev refers to the inner person or the control center of a human being — the hub of thoughts, intellect, emotions, will, decisions, desires, conscience, and overall character. It is essentially everything that makes you what you are — your full inner self, the real "you" behind your actions and choices.

Biblical writers used lev for the whole integrated inner life, not a split between "head" (thinking) and "heart" (feeling) as modern Western culture often does.

I agree with the sentiments you expressed.

There is one thing that I dislike about your reply though. I admit that being raised in a protestant household has left a mark on me. I dislike and distrust anything that smells like Roman Catholicism. The use of the term "excommunicated" is one such distasteful thing. While maybe not theologically wrong, I prefer the term disfellowship. For many, the word excommunicate at the very least implies that the church is denying a person salvation and entry into heaven.

This is just my opinion though.

Anyway, continue to be like the Bereans and study the scripture to verify the truth. Go with grace in Christ.

People do not CAUSE the writings to BECOME inspired.

If they are inspired ( God breathed, directly from God, etc) then they always were and always will be. It is in their nature. We as fallible human beings sometimes recognize that a work is inspired and sometimes we don't.

The cannon of scripture that is recognized as inspired and included in the Bible was already recognized by the majority of Christians before any council approved. The Council just made official that they agreed upon those works as such. There may be other divinely inspired works, but they will not contradict those that are included in the Bible.

As a Christian grows in Knowledge and discernment the surety of what works in the world are divinely inspired will increase, but one must back check against what is known to be good before accepting something new.

God is just. He will judge our hearts. Seek him in truth and he will guide you.

J.R.R. Tolkien had a way with words that few men possess. His writings are clearly influenced by his faith and contain illustrations that are easy to understand and remember. At the very heart of his literary works is a conflict between good and evil, light and dark, the Creator and his rebellious creations. If this sounds familiar, then you should not be surprised. It is the story of the Bible. It is the story of God's creation and its corruption. It is the story of how the whole of creation has been tainted and made impure by pride.

At the root of this rebellion stands Pride—the very word many now rally behind. What was once a warning (“Pride goes before destruction…”) has become a celebration. The natural order has been inverted: evil is paraded in the streets, acts the Bible calls abominable are labeled “empowering,” and self-harm is reframed as self-expression. Scripture warns us clearly: pride comes before the fall.

Sexual identity was never intended to be debated. Sexual partners were never supposed to be of the same sex. Sexual promiscuity was never the plan for humanity. God established the pattern in marriage but, as is always the case, Satan has done his best to corrupt it.

Marriage is a lifelong, covenantal, one-flesh union between one man and one woman, established by God at creation, entered into by mutual consent (“leaving,” “cleaving,” and consummation), and dissolvable only by death (or in the very limited cases of infidelity (sexual immorality/porneia) that Jesus and Paul discuss in Matt 19:9 and 1 Cor 7:15).

Yet the gospel does not leave us in condemnation. The same God who hates sin loves sinners enough to send His Son. Through repentance and faith in Jesus, anyone—regardless of past or present struggles—can be washed, sanctified, and given a new identity in Christ (1 Corinthians 6:11).

Satan’s use of the rainbow is no surprise. God gave it as a sign of mercy after judgment (Genesis 9). The enemy always twists what is holy. But God’s promises endure. His design for marriage and human flourishing endures. And His offer of forgiveness still stands.

A backhanded slap was not a full fight. It was a demeaning insult delivered by a superior to an inferior (Roman to Jew, master to slave, etc.). By turning the other cheek, the victim was forcing the aggressor to either strike them with an open palm — the way one strikes an equal — or back down in shame. It was a bold, nonviolent way of asserting human dignity.

● “If anyone forces you to go one mile...”
Roman soldiers could legally compel civilians to carry their gear for one mile. Going a second mile voluntarily put the soldier in a difficult position — he could be punished for exceeding his authority. The oppressed person suddenly took control of the situation.

● “If anyone sues you and takes your tunic, let him have your cloak as well.”
Giving your outer cloak would leave you naked in public. In that honor-shame culture, this would shame the greedy creditor far more than the debtor.

These are powerful examples of creative, assertive, nonviolent resistance against daily humiliation and minor oppression. Jesus was not teaching helpless passivity. He was rejecting the cycle of violent revenge while refusing to play by the world’s rules of power.

However, these examples have limits.

Jesus was addressing personal insults, legal exploitation, and petty oppression — not armed robbery, home invasion, rape, or murder attempts. The full Bible does not teach total pacifism when innocent life is on the line.

Supporting verses:
● Exodus 22:2-3 clearly permits deadly force to defend your home against a nighttime intruder with no bloodguilt.

● Luke 22:35-36 — Just before His arrest, Jesus instructed His disciples: “If you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.” He was preparing them for real danger.

● 1 Timothy 5:8 — “Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied the faith...” Protection is part of provision.
Nehemiah’s wall builders carried weapons while they worked (Nehemiah 4).

Jesus never taught that we must stand by and watch evil people slaughter the innocent or attack our wives and children. He taught us to reject hatred, personal vengeance, and disproportionate retaliation — while still valuing and protecting God-given life.

The balanced Christian position is this:
Pursue peace when possible. Absorb personal insults when appropriate. But do not abandon the weak and innocent when violent evil comes.

As a father, there are times when you will know more than your children. You will understand the world and how it works in a way that your children never will until they experience it for themselves. Sometimes the hardest thing is to step back and let those experiences happen, then be there to help pick up the pieces after.

It hurts.

This is my attempt to spare others some of that hurt. It is an effort to share insight from someone who has seen more of the world, so that others might learn from experiences and mistakes without repeating them.

FOR MEN LOOKING FOR A WIFE:

Body Count Matters

Men seeking a committed relationship and family life generally do not value high sexual experience in a potential wife—quite the opposite. A family-oriented man tends to avoid women with significant baggage. He does not want to raise another man’s children, marry into debt, or deal with major drama. Instead, he looks for purity, youth, commitment, honor, and a willingness to follow his lead on major household decisions.
When a woman has been with many men, most of these qualities become far less likely. A high body count often means constant (even subconscious) comparisons to previous lovers. “Bad boys” tend to be more exciting but less reliable as providers and fathers. This can create lifestyle expectations that clash with family life. The “grass is always greener” mentality can lead to restlessness, dissatisfaction in the bedroom, or financial irresponsibility that ultimately damages or destroys the family.

Status Does Not Matter

For a traditional man, a woman’s professional success or career achievements carry little weight. He intends to be the primary provider for the family. Many women tend to view the money they earn as “hers” and the money he earns as “theirs”—a dynamic that often creates tension.

A demanding career also means significant time away from home and children. Child-rearing is frequently outsourced to daycare and institutions that may not share your values. This reduces daily proximity, weakens the familial bond, leads to fewer home-cooked meals, and brings more work-related stress into the household. Most men are willing to work hard to provide, but in return they expect peace in the home and their needs to be met—outcomes that are far more difficult when the wife is heavily focused on her career.

Religious Convictions Matter

DO NOT enter a serious relationship with someone of a different faith.
DO NOT enter a serious relationship with someone from a different denomination or sect.

DO NOT DO IT!

Nothing good is likely to come from it. Religious differences tend to drive wedges between spouses, spark repeated arguments, confuse children, reduce church involvement, and sometimes lead one or both partners to drift away from the faith.

"Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness?"

Resolve Arguments Before Sleeping

Address problems immediately. Do not let them fester like an infection. Have enough faith in each other that you can have hard conversations about difficult problems without worrying that the other will leave and give up. It is much easier to fix a problem in its infancy that when it is full grown. Do not give it a chance to grow. There is no doubt that you will face difficult situations; we all do. Godly people—and especially godly marriages—are prime targets of the enemy. Expect difficulties and deal with them early.

Make a Habit of Praying Together

couple that prays together tends to stay on the same path. When you focus on God first, everything else tends to fall into place. Praying together reminds you of your priorities and shared goals. It also helps you express things that are difficult to say otherwise. Talking to your Heavenly Father about what troubles you or excites you is one of the most natural and powerful things you can do as a couple. Seek His wisdom and guidance together.

Remember Your Vows

Are you a Man or Woman of honor?
Who did you make your promise to?
As a Christian you promised to GOD to honor your spouse according you His rules and guidance.
As a Husband or Wife you promised to your spouse that you would put their welfare and that of the family unit above your own desires.
As a Son- or Daughter-In-Law you promised these same things to your spouse's extended family.

A whole host of people are counting on you to live as a person of honor. They will (and should) hold you accountable to the vows you willingly made. Do not become angry when they remind you of your obligations.

Live a life of honor. Set an example for your children. They are counting on you.

Sexual Innuendo, course joking, and foul language are all things that intrude into otherwise harmless conversations because of the defiled and unpure.

Much to my shame, I find myself falling into this trap over and over again. This is one I really need our Lord's help to fix. I have proven inadequate on my own.

It is:
• Falling short of God's glory (Romans 3:23).

• Anything not from faith (Romans 14:23) or failure to love God and neighbor fully.
• Basically, sin is doing wrong (evil) or failing to do right (good).

So if this is the case:
• How do we recognize sin?

The Jews say to follow the 10 Commandments and the rest of the Law as handed down to Moses and the prophets. Christians tend to say there are only two commandments: Love God and Love Others. Still others will say follow your heart.

Which is correct?

What about the people who lived before Moses? What about people who have never heard about Jesus?

The Bible teaches that humans have an innate awareness of right and wrong through the conscience, even without explicit teaching or the written law of God.

The 10 Commandments were a summary of God's pre-existing law. They told us what to do and, more importantly, how to think if we wanted to be in a right relationship with God.

Think about the Sabbath.

"Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy..."

This was not the beginning of this principle. It appears in the very beginning of the Bible

"Thus the heavens and the earth were completed, and all their hosts. By the seventh day God completed His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made."
Genesis 2:1-3

Why did God rest on the seventh day? Was He tired? No. He rested to make a point. We were never designed to work all the time. We need rest and time to maintain our relationship with God.

Think about tithing. When was the first mention of sacrificing to God? When was 10% first given back to God?

"So it came about in the course of time that Cain brought an offering to the LORD from the fruit of the ground. Abel, on his part also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. And the LORD had regard for Abel and for his offering;"
Genesis 4:3-5

"And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; now he was a priest of God Most High.
He blessed him and said,
'Blessed be Abram of God Most High,
Possessor of heaven and earth;
And blessed be God Most High,
Who has handed over your enemies to you.'
And he gave him a tenth of everything."
Genesis 14:18-20

These are just a few examples that while the Law was explicitly given to Moses and the Israelites in the wilderness, it was always present from the moment of creation. How could it not be? Following God's Law is simply aligning yourself with His nature.

Consider this the next time you think about skipping church or dishonoring you parents. Think about it every time you talk about God. Think about it in all your dealing with others.

YOU are God's ambassador here on Earth.

What if the real story of Babel is deeper than we’ve been told?

Imagine this hypothesis:
When God created Adam and Eve, they never had to learn a language. They simply spoke with God in the cool of the day—pure, effortless communion flowing heart to Heart. It was part of their original perfect design.

Perhaps that same flawless design continued for generations. Before Babel, the whole earth wasn’t just using one vocabulary. They shared one perfect mode of communication. Every conversation, every plan, every lullaby was instantly understood by all because this was how God originally made humanity to relate—without friction, without barriers, in complete harmony.

Then, on the plains of Shinar, God made a quiet withdrawal. He didn’t smash the tower or violently scramble words. He simply lifted His hand and removed that original perfect design. In that moment the current broke. What once flowed so naturally suddenly became noise. Comfort became confusion. Plans turned to babble. The builders felt the sharp ache of separation for the first time.

They scattered, carrying only fragments of language they now had to learn and teach.
But God was not done writing the story.

At Pentecost that original design was touched again. Disciples spoke in new tongues, and people from every nation heard the wonders of God in their own language. The barrier lifted. A glimpse of the ancient harmony returned.

This hypothesis whispers something beautiful: our deepest communication was never meant to be mere words. It was built into God’s perfect original design for humanity.

Babel showed us the loneliness of life after that design was removed.
Pentecost showed us that God can restore what was lost.

What is the significance of anointing the feet of Jesus?

There are two cases where a woman anointed the feet of Jesus.

“Now one of the Pharisees was requesting Him to eat with him, and He entered the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table. And there was a woman in the city who was a sinner; and when she learned that He was reclining at the table in the Pharisee’s house, she brought an alabaster vial of perfume, and standing behind Him at His feet, weeping, she began to wet His feet with her tears, and she wiped them with the hair of her head, and began kissing His feet and anointing them with the perfume.” Luke 7:36-38, (NASB)

This unnamed woman, who is simply called “a sinner,” was compelled to enter into a Pharisee’s house in order to anoint the feet of the Savior of sinners. It was a display her love and affections for the Lord who had forgiven her, for Jesus said,

“For this reason I say to you, her sins, which are many, have been forgiven, for she loved much; but the one who is forgiven little, loves little.” Luke 7:47 (NASB)

She “loved much” because she had been “forgiven much,” and she was willing to lavish upon her newfound Savior a whole box of precious perfume to show to all in the house her appreciation and gratitude for being forgiven.

The second case of a woman anointing the feet of Jesus is found in three passages: Matthew 26:6-13; Mark 14:3-9; and John 12:1-8.

In the first case noted above, the anointing took place in the house of a Pharisee, but in Mark 14:3 we learn that this anointing happened “in the house of Simon the leper.” The former was done by an unnamed sinful woman; this was done by Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus. The anointing by the unnamed sinner was to signify the love of a newly forgiven soul, but with Mary there was another reason that constrained her to empty her box of costly ointment upon the Savior’s feet.

“Leave her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of My burial. ” John 12:7, (NASB)

Mark is even more specific,

“She has done what she could; she has anointed My body beforehand for the burial.” Mark 14:8 (NASB)

She anointed Jesus’ feet in view of His impending death and burial! She was no doubt expressing her love for her Savior, as in the case of the sinful woman in the home of the Pharisee, but she had also entered into the truth that Jesus was on His way to the cross to die for her and this was her chance to anoint Him in anticipation of His burial. I have always admired Mary for she seems to have been the only disciple that truly believed Jesus when he announced that He would be crucified, buried and then rise from the dead the third day. Mary BELIEVED HIM and expressed her faith by anointing His feet! Jesus was so moved by her faith that He declared,

“Truly I say to you, wherever the gospel is preached in the entire world, what this woman has done will also be told in memory of her.” Mark 14:9 (NASB)

Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, indeed, the King of Israel!” Jesus, finding a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written: “Do not fear, daughter of Zion; behold, your King is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.” ” John 12:12-15(NASB)

Why is this important?
It is stated in the verses above. This fulfilled a prophecy of the Messiah.

This kind of welcome signifies a few things:
• That they all knew Christ as the Messiah (see Psalm 118:25-26)
• That they recognized that Christ is King (see 2 Kings 9:13)
• They all honored Him as both King and Messiah (see Zechariah 9:9)
• He is openly acknowledging that He IS the Messiah by accepting the way the crowds honor him.
"And yet some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples!” Jesus replied, “I tell you, if these stop speaking, the stones will cry out!” " Luke 19:39-40

This sets the stage for everything else that happens in the following week.

Cursing the Fig Tree

On the way to Jerusalem, Jesus curses a barren fig tree, symbolizing judgment on unfruitful Israel (Matthew 21:18–19; Mark 11:12–14).

Cleansing of the temple

“And Jesus entered the temple grounds and began to drive out those who were selling, saying to them, “It is written: ‘And My house will be a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a den of robbers.” And He was teaching daily in the temple; but the chief priests and the scribes and the leading men among the people were trying to put Him to death, and yet they could not find anything that they might do, for all the people were hanging on to every word He said.” Luke 19:45-48(NASB)

The Jews had profaned the Temple and perverted its purpose. Jesus came to bring everyone a way to be right with God. The old had to be done away with to make way for the new. The Lord had previously dwelt within the Temple. In the coming days He chose to make his dwelling within the believers where ever they might be. It was a shift from the corporate to the personal relationship. Instead of relying on a human priest to intercede for us, Jesus himself becomes our High Priest and the Holy spirit our intercessor. Jesus was teaching the people with authority; something that the Jewish leaders could no longer do. Jesus was speaking truth and they could not say otherwise. With every word, he called into question the legitimacy of the very people who were charged with leading the community.

Jesus Speaks to a group of Greeks (Gentiles) and predicts his death.

“ “Now My soul has become troubled; and what shall I say, ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour. Father, glorify Your name.” Then a voice came out of heaven: “I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.” So the crowd of people who stood by and heard it were saying that it had thundered; others were saying, “An angel has spoken to Him.” Jesus answered and said, “This voice has not come for My sake, but for your sakes. Now judgment is upon this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out. And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to Myself.” But He was saying this to indicate the kind of death by which He was to die.” John 12:27-33(NASB)

God spoke and EVERYONE heard. He was pronouncing judgment upon the whole of the Earth and it’s ruler Satan.

Questioned by Jewish Leaders

Jesus was teaching the people and day by day the people grew to respect Him more and more. The Jewish leaders saw what was happening and tried to stop Him. They tried to turn the people away from the influence of Jesus and back to themselves. Jesus responded in a way that the leaders could not refute and it infuriated them. The leaders tried to entrap Him with His own words. They called on him to answer questions of Jewish and Roman law but He answered in ways that adhered to both while at the same time protected him from legal consequence. They were even afraid to use their own authority to seize him in from of the crowds because of the sentiment of the crowds. Thus they began plotting in secret how and when to take him.

Jesus was confronted by the Chief Priests and Elders of the people
“When He entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to Him while He was teaching, and said, “By what authority are You doing these things, and who gave You this authority?” Jesus said to them, “I will also ask you one thing, which if you tell Me, I will also tell you by what authority I do these things. The baptism of John was from what source, from heaven or from men?” And they began reasoning among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say to us, ‘Then why did you not believe him?’ But if we say, ‘From men,’ we fear the people; for they all regard John as a prophet.” And answering Jesus, they said, “We do not know.” He also said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

Jesus denounces the scribes and Pharisees (Matthew 23).
On the Mount of Olives, Jesus delivers the Olivet Discourse, prophesying the destruction of Jerusalem and his second coming (Matthew 24–25; Mark 13; Luke 21:5–36).

The Passover feast is tomorrow. Peter and John are sent to make preparations for what is later to be known as The Last Supper; the last time Jesus would eat and drink with his disciples before he dies.

"When the hour had come, He reclined at the table, and the apostles with Him. And He said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; for I say to you, I shall never again eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He said, “Take this and share it among yourselves; for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine from now on until the kingdom of God comes.” And when He had taken some bread and given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood." Luke 22:14-20

After the meal Jesus and his Disciples travel to the Mount of Olives and He predicts his imminent death and resurrection.

Jesus and his Disciples arrive a the Garden of Gethsemane. While there, Jesus tells his Disciples “My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death” and goes farther into the garden alone to pray to God about the events soon to occur.
After Jesus finishes praying and returns to His Disciples He is confronted by Judas Iscariot along with the Roman cohort and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees.

Jesus is arrested and hauled away to be tried by the Sanhedrin in the dead of night…

The Trials of Jesus Christ:
(The first 3 trials were all for the offense of Blasphemy and judged by the Jews)
• First trial, before Annas [nighttime hours]; Annas is looking for an accusation, biding time till Sanhedrin is gathered at High Priestly villa.
• Second [and primary] trial before Sanhedrin, Jesus is condemned.
• Third trial, immediately at dawn: the condemnation repeated, then Jesus taken to Romans
(The last 3 trials were for the offense of Treason against Rome, because Blasphemy was not a capital offense under Roman Law, and judged by Roman Authorities)
• Fourth trial before Pilate
• Fifth trial before Herod
• Sixth trial before Pilate

The Crucifixion:
• Jesus is scourged, but this is not enough for the mob that the Sanhedrin had paid off, so the crowd yells, "Crucify Him or we will tell Rome!"
• Jesus is finally turned over to be crucified.
• Jesus mocked by Roman soldiers and a crown of thorns is forced into Jesus's head
• Jesus bears His cross to gate on north of city and is crucified around 9 am

Jesus Dies (about 3 pm):
• Roman Soldier pierces Jesus' side side with a spear to ensure that he is dead.
• The veil outside the Holy of Holies torn in two from the top to the bottom.
• The Earth Shakes
• Some graves opened and dead people rise again and go into the city.
• Passover lambs slain in temple

Jesus buried by sundown

Jesus had committed no crimes, had not sinned against God, and had followed all the rules of the old covenant. In short, He was perfect.
The Jewish priests of that time felt threatened by his teachings. They had tried to turn the public against Him many times in the past with no success. Finally they arrested Him in the dead of night, brought Him to a trial (in a way that violated their own rules) before a prejudiced court, and found Him guilty, all of this while the rest of the city slept. They then turned Him over to the Roman Authorities and threatened a revolt if he was not executed.
He was beaten, whipped raw, and forced to carry his own cross through the city and up the hill to Golgotha. There, His hands and feet were nailed to this wooden cross. It was then raised up for all to see. Jesus hung there between two other crucified men for about 6 hours, slowly weakening and suffocated to death.

The sky turned dark from about noon until 3 pm.
When Jesus finally did die:
• there was an earthquake
• the curtain separating the ark of the covenant in the Holy of Holies from the rest of the temple was torn completely in two
• many holy people who had previously died were raised to life and seen throughout the city by many people.

When all these things happened and were witnessed by the roman soldiers standing guard over those crucified on the hill of Golgotha "...they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!”" (Matthew 27:51)
Finally just before sundown Jesus's body was wrapped in linen cloth and laid to rest in a tomb. A large stone was rolled in front of the tomb's opening.

The man who claimed to be the Son of the God Most High, Maker of the Heavens and the Earth was dead.
Witnessed by hundreds if not thousands, verified with a spear through His side by the roman soldiers, and buried in donated grave,
Jesus was Dead...

Now, here are some of the illegalities of the Jewish trials.
1. If a man was arrested for a capital crime, he could never be arrested at night. It had to be in broad daylight. Jesus' arrest took place between 1 and 2 o'clock at night.
2. If a man was arrested for a capital crime, no one cooperating in the arrest could be in any way connected to the one who is accused. No arrest for a capital crime could be made based upon information given by a follower or colleague of the accused. Because they felt if the accused was guilty so were his followers. But the entire plot revolved around Judas, one of the followers. This law was blatantly and openly ignored.
3. No Jewish trial could ever be held at night. The law stated that it must be held in the daytime. Listen to the code, which is taken from the Talmud: “The members of the court may not alertly and intelligently hear the testimony against the accused during the hours of darkness.” But, if you check the record, both before Annas and before Caiaphas, these trials were held in darkness.
4. The members of the Jewish court, after hearing the testimony of true witnesses (none of which were ever brought before Jesus) in a capital crime, could not immediately act and judge. They were to go home and remain alone and separate from one another for two days (at the least, one full day), thinking about the testimonies they had heard. During that time, here's what they were to do. Here's the language of the code: “Eat like food, drink like wines, sleep well. And once again return and hear the testimony of the accused. Then, and only then, shall you render a vote.” They didn't do that. They Jewish court never left the presence of Caiaphas!
5. In fact, even the method of voting was specified! They never took an “all in favor say I, all opposed say no” kind of vote. Their vote was supposed to be taken from the youngest to the oldest so that the youngest wouldn't be intimidated or influenced by the older votes. This never happened.

No trial could be held before only one judge, and never without a defense attorney. All of that was overlooked, openly, willfully ignored and disobeyed. They didn't follow their own rules.

The women buy embalming spices to prepare Jesus body properly.
They were unable to do this before because of Sabbath restrictions.
They spend the rest of the day making preparations for Sunday when they would finally be able to observe the rituals and traditions associated with the death of a loved one.
Jesus is still dead and buried. The world waits in disbelief.

JESUS WAS ALIVE!!!

On the day of his resurrection, Jesus Christ made at least five appearances. Mark's Gospel says the first person to see him was Mary Magdalene. Jesus also appeared to Peter, to the two disciples on the road to Emmaus, and later that day to all of the disciples except Thomas, while they were gathered in a house for prayer.

The eyewitness accounts in the Gospels provide what Christians believe to be undeniable evidence that the resurrection of Jesus Christ did indeed happen. Matthew 28:1-13, Mark 16:1-14, Luke 24:1-49, and John 20:1-23.

The bottom line is this: The United States is not at war with Iran.

There has been no invasion of Iranian territory, no American boots on the ground in Tehran, and no congressional declaration of war. What America has carried out are targeted strikes against Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps assets, sanctions on the regime, and operations against the proxy militias Iran arms and directs. These are measured responses, not war.
