At one point in life, my professional title at a very well-known company worldwide was "Chief Expert for Open Source Software".
I have passed a large part of my adult life writing tools for code analysis, plagiarism that pretty much downloaded the whole of github at one point, used by a myriad of organizations to go deep down into complex codebases before there was "AI". A usable Linux tends to use 18 million lines of code. An AOSP is magnitude larger, yet I have audited both with tools and my human eyes.
As a former professional on that exact topic you mention that did way too many due diligences for M&A, permit me to say this once: the code doesn't matter.
Why? What is the point of being open source when it is easy to include hidden extensions on your servers that go into the firmware you flash.
Even when you do compile yourself (which nobody ever does), do you have any notion how easy it is to hide bad/exploitable code buried deep in millions LoC?
The code at this point is irrelevant unless they provide reproducible builds, which they themselves admit that is only partial, lest we forget the whole blobs copied without code where anything can be running inside. It is near impossible for even my resources to a deeper inspection against a well-financed team of adversarial experts.
Even last week you saw the spyware on smart TV's being exposed. The software codebase there is far simpler and yet took them 70k USD of their pocket to prove it.
So I won't look at the code. I look at the money (opaque funding) and their abnormally suspicious recommendation of other government sponsored tools like Signal and Tor in the past.

There are some things to solve around reticulum bridges. For example, there is no way that a 100 MB video clip shared here on NOSTR will pass over LoRa nor bluetooth because it would jam the link for days. But in current reticulum this would happen.
So the platform needs to know more about the path to reach that data or to deliver it and say "Sorry, I will not send this 100MB to you via LoRa"

Interesting enough Tether prints money from nothing and the owner of Tether is nowadays working inside the White House.
In either case the preference here is to just keep things simple and use reticulum which is battle-proven running from nearly any type of connection between two devices.
Meshtastic is OK, too bad they only care for chat and small text messages. Next step on my side is to test deeper the reticulum mesh on LoRa. Don't know if performance is worth the effort, but will at least try.

I'm writing that tooling as we speak inside the new iteration of geogram that will be made available within a week or so.
Each device connected to the network (Android, Windows, Linux, etc) finds other devices that advertise themselves as NOSTR relays inside reticulum.
Normally when you have +1000 users hosting their own relays this would mean 1000 users repeating asking 1000 other devices for updates and the battery on those with phones would quickly drain. So the option here is to have self-nominated indexers.
An indexer device is plugged to electricity from a home wifi (fast net access without limits, any old Android is OK) that answers questions from users: "where can I find notes from npubXYZ?"
It is the job of those indexers to receive info from +1000 users about what they are willing to share and then to answer which devices have what a user is asking to see (e.g. recent posts from a list of authors).
Indexers can self-nominate (each person can volunteer their hardware for that) and they synchronize with other indexers because it is faster and avoids bothering the smaller devices. When an indexer goes offline, just find another still alive with a good uptime and ask there.
There is a bit more to indexers than what I write here because they also have rules about what to keep (reduce spam) and people shouldn't see an indexer as a large disk drive. Indexers only give answers where content can be found but don't store it on their own disk, which means that users themselves are responsible for data duplication and survival.
When you care for an author on NOSTR, then it is your decision to keep data published by the author on your devices. This way you keep alive what matters to you and carry it on your pocket to use/read when needed. Blossom server is included on the package, so you keep his binary files (e.g. movies, photos) too.
There are many things to improve until a stable is ready, just follow the posts and you should see when it comes out. An interesting aspect is merging both NOSTR running inside reticulum with NOSTR relays available from normal internet connections. When you connect with your usual account you should be able to keep interacting here on normal internet but also share the same posts to reticulum relays (including your own device) and continue as usual even after all the major relays being used right now are gone.

The main difficulty was always how to enable others get data from your device.
We seriously need to rethink the dependency to major relays with domain names. In the future, perhaps relays can be self-elected within a pool of candidates based on factors like bandwidth, uptime and storage. So that when they disappear for whatever reason, the network and clients simply pick another candidate and keep moving.
Up to this day we don't have clever ways to ask for a file across the available relays. We either manually ping any domain that was manually added by ourselves as relay, or we instintively go for the big relays in the hope that our data is kept there.
Time to build some indexers and global DHT for NOSTR.

I sincerely distrust Pear due to to opaque funding and even more dislike keet for being closed source. They are a business and if you aren't paying for their merchandise then you know who is the merchandise and who is paying for it.
In either case, if you follow my publications the similar approach as done by Pear/HolePunch was adopted earlier this year. In essence requires a few starting servers and then uses WebRTC(or similar) underneath to connect devices.
That is OK, WebRTC is kind of fantastic but still not enough.
What if the internet is too heavily blocked/monitored or simply down?
Today we still build our tools under the assumption that connecting to each other across large distances isn't a challenge because the internet is permanent and solves that.
But we live in a changing world. Where fences are being placed on the networks across countries, where wars or problems quickly cut the cables. Perhaps it is time to think on the internet only as one of the ways to get connected and invest in networks that don't care about the connection type, nor IP addresses for that matter.

The next step in NOSTR evolution is where each user is a relay.
An evolution where each participant hosts the text and files published by itself and by those users that sees value in storing/sharing for the future.
This won't easily happen on this current world dominated by a few central relays where everyone connects that hold no guarantee your data will be there for 10 years, or when they do it is likely to be sponsored by some government agency.
There is a way out of that.
