Haha sorry mate, I thought it was clear that I was commenting about how these commercial vessels are usually manned. I don’t personally know the current crew of that specific vessel. So maybe I’m wrong. Maybe that boat is full of Russian spies and international contractors who are paid ‘extremely well’ just like in the hollywood movies.…
Or maybe instead of wasting Russian resources, it’s like most other commercial vessels that work in dicey waters of war zones and piracy. Where companies and governments save their money by using cheap foreign labour for much of the crew. You don’t tell them their true or full job scope until they’re onboard, or ever. You take their documents once they’re onboard. You don’t let them off. And payment? Maybe you’ll pay them something at the end just to shut them up, but it doesn’t have to be what was agreed.. it’s entrapment, not volunteering. And it’s very very common practice in the shipping industry, especially through dangerous waters. I wouldn’t wish death upon them, just like I wouldn’t wish death upon the hostages who were forced to work the farms and construction during WW2.
Sorry if you’re feeling triggered because it offends your favourite team. But if you think it’s a hilarious idea, then lucky you - you haven’t been exposed to how the global shipping industry works.

There wouldve probably been Phillipinos and other nationalities onboard who are nothing to do with the war. Theyre the backbone and the cheap labour that gets chewed up by the global shipping industry. Often locked into vessels without access to their passport or any port that will let them off. Some of these guys aren’t allowed home for months or even years at a time.
War isn’t a two sided fight. It’s an infection that can hurt everyone.

If politicians don’t feel confident that a war can’t hurt them personally, then they’re far less likely to start one.
So with multiple military powers being more than capable of an attack on anyone’s soil, the major militarised governments will keep on the proxy wars and inflation. They’ll hurt any bystanders to retain their power.

A lotta mums will tell you to have joy, have connection, and live fully.
But maybe this might connect with you too.. :
Having kids is like having bitcoin - Lower your time preference. A lot of people, healthy or not, don’t or can’t fall pregnant or stay pregnant when they plan to.
So when/if you’re trying for kids….. just DCA in.
Don’t try and time the market, because it can burn you both ways.
Don’t have expectations, because then your emotions can drive you into bad decisions. Stress is one of mother natures most potent contraceptives.
Just lower that time preference, DCA in, and enjoy the ride. It will set you all up for a prosperous future.

If you want it simplified then yeah, pretty much! But it’s less about people with cash.
Global liquidity valve just means that bitcoin reacts first and fastest when money becomes easier or harder to get in the world.
When money is easy, BTC jumps early.
When money is tight, BTC drops early.
So it’s like an early warning indicator for the rest of the financial system.
Not because people individually have extra cash, but because the whole system does.

Yeah.. It’ll catch at some point I imagine. Hopefully the push in some countries for social media to require ID or be linked to a government registration, will actually push nostr uptake closer to a tipping point.
In my circles I’d never known of anyone to make the switch to nostr before, but now I know people who are talking about it. And they’re not bitcoiners. Sometimes you just need a slap from the system to wake you up

😅 I can’t tell if you’re shit stirring or if you think cherry picked hindsight is useful.
His “gold outcome” didn’t outperform his Bitcoin unless he actually sells the dip.
Just like your house doesn’t get smaller when the market dips - it’s just volatility.
What outperformed Bitcoin was a bad entry, not gold itself.
If he bought BTC:
- 1 year earlier
- 1 year later
- Or on literally any DCA schedule
- with any cash buffer
- with any kind of risk management
…his outcome would be dramatically better than gold.
The problem isn’t Bitcoin. The problem is
- trading in your house
- To buy near the exact top
- with a short time horizon
- without a plan for volatility
Gold cant save you from a move like that — it just hides it by being slow
And for the fella who bought at 61k — you’re not screwed. Its gonna be fine.
You only lock in the loss if you sell. Every past cycle shows that the worst entries eventually turn into strong positions, as long as you give bitcoin a long enough runway.
Even 2017 ATH buyers (who had worse timing and worse drawdown than you) ended up about 3.5 x up just by holding into the next full cycle.
Your job now isn’t timing — it’s patience.
Stay solvent, zoom out, and don’t let a bad entry turn into a bad exit.

That only matters if you’re selling right now. You bought near a top, and you’re comparing to right now in a sizeable drawdown from a grind year in a terrible macro backdrop..
Anyone who buys near a cycle top has to wait. But at least the hype got them on the train, because they do reap the rewards. People who bought like you but in 2017 had to wait 3 years just to “break even”. But now they’re happy af that they bought. It’s the same for every hodler.
Those massive gains you fomo on only apply to
- the few that timed it from sheer luck (don’t ignore how big those downsides were and how many got wiped out)
- or the many that raised their time preference and just kept holding through the downtime to the next leg up
A loss only occurs when you sell. So just don’t sell and don’t worry.
Your time will come and you’ll be thankful you didn’t let emotions shake you out of the market.
Raise your time preference, don’t even worry about the price. Soon you’ll have first cyclers accusing you of having it too easy the next time around.

Hey thank you for your explanation. Sorry I guess I was focussing more on the mechanics of the underlying layer. As in, the validity of the blockchain isn’t compromised.
I hope I’m no misunderstood here, I think people should be angry as hell that their wealth and their life raft is being undermined by a select few. It’s a fiat manoeuvre, and I hope more people do something about it. These changes clearly go against the whitepaper, go against the intended design, and go against the entire valuation model of btc history and its present use case.
I do want to push back on something though - It’s a default v30 setting, not a necessary one. So from that 12% you mentioned - because propagation relies on paths, how many of those v30 users run disabled defaults, or filtered inscriptions, or use custom configurations. The software version number doesn’t generate the spam, the mempool policy does. I think most people will be aware of the policy (except newbies who following instructions on a site). And I don’t see the incentive for most nodes to run v30 on its default settings, so why would they?
Plus miners also have to choose to include the junk once they’ve received it. My understanding is that miners will ignore any junk that doesn’t at least pay more than the real transactions. So any spam has to outbid the market, which also reduces the chances of it being included in the block. This is what happened in different hype periods with the satoshi dice spam in 2013/14, opreturn graffiti spam in 2015/16, block size war spam waves, 2020/21 consolidation spam, and the 2023/24 Ordinals + BRC20 inscription mania (which I imagine is actually worse than v30 will be?). And bitcoin recovered every time, institutional adoption grew, and real payments reclaimed blockspace.
Spam is expensive to sustain, hype burns out, junk creators run out of money, normal transactions set the long term fee floor, the block size cap prevents unlimited bloat. So the junk always collapses under its own cost. I guess my point is that I don’t think (and am hopeful) that nowhere near that 12% is actually participating in spam. And that there are a number of hurdles to pass to get there.
I imagine you know all of this sorry, I’m more saying this so if anyone else reads the thread, they don’t just panic into doing nothing or bailing out of btc.
Everyone should run a node and ensure it’s not v30 on default settings. Because it doesn’t just mean you refuse to participate in undermining the btc network - it means you actively fight those that do, because you break the propagation paths. The more path breaks there are, the less spam there is. Plus you gain the other benefits of running a node.
Right now I prefer Knots, because the more traction that clear alternatives to Core get, the easier it becomes for newcomers to see that they do have options. Choice strengthens decentralisation. Which weakens the power plays of the future.
I guess my main point is that if you don’t agree with devs, then the worst thing you can do is give up on btc. If you care about sound money, if you care about decentralisation, you can fight back by running a node on your terms.
It’s like selling a dip. Don’t let emotions ruin your ability to defend what yourself.

When Bitcoin sells off first, it isn’t failing or breaking, it’s signalling that something else in the global financial system is overheating. BTC is the smoke alarm; the fire is the liquidity stress underneath.
Firesale prices while BTC is strengthening, is a wealth opportunity, not a wealth loss.
Get your living expenses covered and some emergency money aside so that you don’t feel the stress of living on the edge. Then just autopilot your DCA or buy the dips.
Don’t let fear leave you frozen in the headlights - do something about it.

I think perhaps you guys are talking about two different things? Abrahamic principles v Abrahamic Institutions.
Abrahamic institutions are amongst the biggest beneficiaries of the fiat system, because they take advantages to levels that no other organisation gets. It’s not even a hidden or controversial thing that Abrahamic institutions
- rely on tax breaks and exemptions
- rely on taxpayer funding via the state
- rely on inflation
- very strong political alliances
- very strong hierarchy and emphasis on obedience to authority
- highly centralised leadership
- partner with banks on fractional reserve principles
- rely and benefit on systems of debt creation
- amongst the largest asset holders on the planet because they seek to benefit from inflation
- prioritise institutional growth over economic reform
- maintain strict control of their financial opacity
BUT the religious texts themselves encourage some very btc aligned values
- truth
- integrity
- accountability
- confronting injustice
- distributed community responsibility
- critiques of hoarding and exploitation of the vulnerable
- transparency
- warnings against concentration of power
- condemnation of exploitative lending or prohibition of interest based systems
- emphasis on fairness and condemnation of debasement
So I think maybe you’re both right. And I’d add that hopefully, something like btc can make an institution actually start employing the values that it teaches.

Nothing I said addresses the ‘truth’ of his claims based on who he is 😅 I was explaining why his presentation as an authority on the topic is very purposefully misleading.
That’s not an ad hominem fallacy; it’s assessing his credibility.
I can discuss the actual scientific points from the video too. But I haven’t because that would take even longer to tap out. And really, if you like rabbit holes, then hearing of controversial context should be enough to make you fact check it yourself. Which is why I pointed out his lack of credibility. I thought someone who questions things would like a bit more juice on the topic.
Also, if someone is actually into questioning very robust theories that have withstood countless scientific challenges for generations (like evolution or relativity). I kind of assumed they’d be very keen to know about the first person to ever prove the theory wrong. You know, who they get their info from. Because that would make them the most profound scientific figure of this century! 🤩🥳
I dont think you should take my word for it. Look him up. Read his stuff or watch his lectures. Whenever he makes a point, go and read what the actual scientific consensus is and what the literature says. You’ll find his big gaps that he very conveniently never mentions, and most of his points that he misrepresents, or possibly hasn’t even bothered to read. His own CV shows he’s not even remotely qualified, trained, or experienced on the topic (though he sure enjoys giving humanities work science-sounding names 😂). You can find for yourself that he led an organisation with the goal of making the American culture more theistic in its values by driving a wedge between empirical scientific research and the American education & politics 😅 the dude openly tries to manipulate the masses.. and makes a living from it.
Or, just focus on the fact that I don’t recommend trusting the guy 😂

Nope 😅 I’ve literally watched him lecture with an open mind where he summarises his book. And watched more of his content to make sure I understood his reasoning! Then I felt like I needed to learn more about him because he didn’t seem to speak truly about the subjects he critiqued.
So no, I’m definitely not afraid to read his books.. But if his goal clearly wasn’t education, his goal is to trick people - why would I pay him for a book? That would be like paying for a flat earth book.. a book isn’t a force field. If an argument collapses in a lecture and under experimentation, it doesn’t magically become true once it’s written in a chapter.
Also, did I tell you not to read the book? In fact if it raises questions for you then I’d encourage it!
I think if you have time, then it would be a great idea to read his books along with the actual theories he disputes (explosive evolutionary events, modern theory of evolution, fossil preservation conditions and regions).
But if you follow his messaging alone, then you’ll never be exposed to the actual theories that he pretends to ‘disprove’. So you’ll have no way of verifying for yourself. You’ll be trusting just him with your world view - which is what all conmen want.

No, I’ve seen a couple lectures and a debate. Which is enough to assure me that I should not waste time or money on his content. Because if you’re familiar with palaeontology and evolution, then you clearly see him purposefully misleading his audience. Kinda like listening to Peter Schiff for bitcoin advice.

that title makes it sound like he’s got a PhD in science… He’s an evangelical Christian who did his PhD in philosophy. Where he philosophised about what science is in a societal context. His undergrad was focussed on oil exploration.
Other than a brief stint in oil exploration, the dude has made his entire career out of selling books to evangelicals, and giving talks to evangelicals.
He even started the ‘Centre for Science and Culture’. Which has never done anything scientific - its core agenda is to manipulate American education and culture into being more evangelical. They even had a core confidential document leaked years ago that stated their plan to become a wedge between Americans and any science that explains life, the universe, and human beings (without invoking god). You can probably still find the original one that leaked (not the one that was updated for PR reasons 😂)
If you like rabbit holes, looking into this guys history as a conman is a good one 😂
Which is why his points he makes are always flawed. Because they are always purposefully incorrect, misinterpreted, out of context, or just vague claims, all with the intent of leading people to Christianity under the guise of scientific critique.

Dunno if you’re looking to expand this, but I spend a lot of time bouncing around a range of vessels and small remote infrastructure. If you haven’t already, I think there’d be bonus value found if users could save and name their locations with the equipment available. So that when they next return to the same place, they can just select it from their saved locations (and maybe update it if somethings changed).
A time parameter would also be pretty handy for when you’ve only got a short break, or doing multiple shorter workouts in a day instead of a larger single session.
Nice work miles, would be cool to see this grow.

Yeah there’s not much lead time to become quantum resistant before potential quantum threats can materialise.
I’m new to nostr.. I kind of just assumed there’d be a semi orderly scramble to get the network defended.
Coming from btc, it can take a fair while to get consensus and then develop, and then roll out trial period, and then mass adoption.. by the time you get from the first debate to the mass adoption, you’re running critically close to a “quantum threat arriving in 5 years” scenario..
Hopefully btc, nostr and any other community driven network can get itself covered and converted with time to breathe rather than a wild rush near the end.
Gotta admit I could put my quantum knowledge on a single a4 page though.. Do you recommend any resources to help understand the technical threat to nostr?

Yeah you’re right, it’s a big factor. I do think there are other great strengths already though.
- I think being able to essentially do digital cashies is absolutely massive, especially as adoption increases.
- Able to avoid card fees and surcharges.
- Not needing permission for certain payments.
- A self managed level of privacy attached to payments.
- Not needing to disclose financial information in order to make a payment (credit card deets).
- Smart contracts for more complex pay setups
I think what your saying about idealogical preference is obviously a big reason for lots of people. But I think that the idealogical push will eventually lead to greater acceptance. Which will hopefully lead to even more favourable conditions like de minimis exemptions for transacting. And eventually straight up monetary adoption.
Do you think it can head that way?

I would say the accounting cost can be overcome with automated services, personal use exemptions, non kyc, and circular economies - Kinda like just spending in cash.
I was referring more to the appeal of btc transactions not being strong enough to overcome the learning curve for newbies, or to overcome the want to hold btc.

I’m not suggesting its a financial disadvantage. I’m suggesting that the fact it is treated as a taxable event, puts new or potential bitcoiners off transacting in it. Because it’s not the streamline they’re used to with fiat, and depending on your timescale, holding btc is the attractive alternative.
Theres a personal use asset loophole in Australia for transactions under $10k (but with a short time limit), there’s circular economies, lightning settlements, there’s nostr zaps.. all of it works in favour of btc.
But there are tax implications and a lot of new learning hurdles for someone who doesn’t yet even know how their bank works (I’d argue the majority of bank customers).. so it makes it hard to incentivise people, when they feel overwhelmed or confused by it.

I’ve been wrestling with this one. Australia (and many other countries) logs btc as subject to capital gains tax. So whenever we dispose of btc (like when we buy something with btc), it’s treated no different to a sale. We’re then liable for capital gains tax on any “profits” made from btc value growth since it was first bought. It’s a big tax too.
Lots of people only know of kyc exchanges or are not confidant or comfortable with their non kyc options.
So how can you transition a general population to btc as monetary exchange, when it’s at such a transactional disadvantage compared to fiat?
Not trying to sound pessimistic. Genuinely interested in thoughts on this for how to build the road ahead

Your phone uses short wave radio (~gigahertz frequencies that are very easily blocked by dense material like concrete, metal..and also interfered with by free floating particles). What’s your Walmart made of?…
Apollo mission used high powered directional antennae’s on both earth and the spacecraft. With a completely unobstructed line of sight between them.
They had satellite dishes more than 60m across to catch signal from spacecraft.
They used narrow beam radio signal pointed directly at its target. It means far far far far less margin for error than your mobile phone, who’s signal can bounce off objects and particles (hence you don’t always need to have direct line of sight with the cell tower). But it meant that Apollo could send a stronger signal and have greater sensitivity to signals because narrow beam is so much more efficient (as long as it hits the target).
An easier analogy would be -
your phone is a walkie talkie in a metal box, Apollo had a laser guided radio link across open space.

Some interesting talking points. But it’s also some very strong spin on those events that’s being presented (to at least a partly Phillipine audience by the looks of it).
Phillipines ties to US were really cemented in WW2, long before China was considered a major threat - when China and the US shared the same enemy in Japan. After Pearl Harbour, the US would not risk war unannounced on its doorstep again, hence it further developed those bases in the Philippines.
Taiwan is not a US proxy for war. Similar to the Philippines, it’s US interest is to retain an element of control or at least supervision of what is going on in the other side of the Pacific. But that means China feels exposed like the US did with Cuba, and like Russia did with NATO expansion.
It’s also now something that the US cannot afford to leave because of the chip manufacturer TSMC. If the US loses that chip manufacturing, their economy absolutely dives. Apple, Intel, Google, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Amazon, Meta, Tesla, OpenAI, and many others cannot produce their products without those chips, and the only manufacturer with that capability and capacity of production is in Taiwan.. so they’re US current greatest weakness, is sitting just offshore China.
Neither one wants casualties, but both find the current situation unacceptable. So they’re out there wheeling and dealing, puffing their chests out, trying to influence or manipulate other countries wherever they can.

Gday Alex, sorry mate I skim read some of that, so maybe I’m off the mark, but I think I get the gist.
Obviously you’re after technical info for setting up a node and mining. But at the same time, just in case you haven’t yet digested these, here’s some books (all also audiobooks) that can give you a whole lot of context for any tech knowledge to slot into. They’re not all essential, but will help with broader understanding and therefore your ability to make your own decisions around btc. Some authors have more biases than others, so don’t take all these books as gospel.

In terms of the tech side. Realistically you solo mining today is a solid up front cost, that won’t decentralise network mining by much, and wont exactly be earning you much. It’s not much bang for your buck so I wouldn’t start there.
I’d start with just running a full node, playing with that. Then mining after if you’re still keen.
In terms of a node, you can kind of set it up how you like, but it’s kinda common for easy nodes to be set up on a raspberry pi and external ssd or an old lappy or desktop with external ssd. External ssd is because the blockchain is large, and growing - so it takes up a bit of space. If you use old equipment, just make sure you’ve wiped it clean before you run a node.
Then you’ve got to decide what to run. If you haven’t heard about the core version 30 v knots debate, then you should look into it - because you running a node will be you casting a vote on the debate. So do yourself a favour and run a version of Core from before Version 30 (the contentious version) until you decide to either update to the latest core, or use knots. Personally, I’d avoid getting the latest of anything until it’s had time to iron out any issues. I’d also argue that core version 30 is not aligned with the original intent or ongoing idea of btc, and actually provides an attack vector on your btc. But that’s up to you.
You can figure out how to run it as a newbie by using some setup platforms like Umbrel, Raspiblitz, MyNode, Start9.. those are the ones I know of.. they are all open source. But they’re not all the same. There’ll be more out there too. Check them out and go from there. They’ll all have instructions and different pros and cons.
Don’t forget the ways of supporting a btc ecosystem goes far beyond running a node or mining. So if you want to be more involved, but mining isn’t your thing, there’s all sorts of other ways to support. Accepting btc payments, avoiding custodial wallets, buying from btc economies, pay in btc, run or use lightning, education or discussions with people not exposed to it (respectfully!), support infrastructure and privacy tools, HODL responsibly, and participate in the culture around it.
Also, good on ya for taking steps to support everyone by running a node 💪🏼
