We have an all-electric high-performance home with solar and energy storage. The surplus solar is exported to the grid, and during the summer we allow the grid to pull from our batteries too and get compensated for that (Virtual Power Plant events run by ConnectedSolutions in the north east, USA). So although our winter electricity bills are really high in Massachusetts, they are counter-balanced by almost zero bills in summer plus what we receive for the energy from our batteries via the VPP events. In addition we get incentives from our utility for charging our car only during off-peak hours. For 2025 our total net costs for electricity were just $483.55. Then when I calculated our total consumption of home plus car, it works out that our effective energy rate is $0.026 per kWh, which is AMAZING! The VPP events are the lifesaver here, without them we&#39;d be toast.<br/><br/>What this tells me is that there might be some logic to increasing our mining. Alongside such botanical curiosities as pawpaw trees, medlar and Asian pears, they have amassed a collection of over 30 varieties of dahlias. I had been meaning to get over there all summer and fall to tour the farm and talk plants with them, but for one reason or another it never happened… until it absolutely had to happen. The dahlias would not survive what was coming.<br/><br/>The incoming frost was more like a freeze, and Maria and Dustin’s dahlias were growing in blissful ignorance to this weather event. On the night of October 9th the temperatures plunged into the 20s. The following morning Tom and I arrived at the flower farm ready with our thermals, coats, mittens and cameras.<br/><br/>The grass crunched underfoot, blackberry leaves were edged in white and aside from the curious clucks of chickens there was a stillness and a silence to the morning. We walked through frozen rows of dahlias, papery and stiff to the touch, transformed by the freeze into sculptures, their vibrant colors both dulled and highlighted by frost as if they were candied violets.<br/><br/>Photographically, the dahlias couldn’t have been more interesting. In the moment of their death there was such beauty, beautiful beyond what they would have been if seen a day earlier at their peak.<br/><br/>The different forms of dahlias responded in different ways to the frost. Ball dahlias stood defiant in the face of the freeze while dinnerplate dahlias totally capitulated, reaching for the ground in urgency when prior to the frost they were reaching for the sky with all the time in the world. It felt very much like time had stopped and we could explore this in-between space between life and decay. The moment felt special, and we knew as we pressed the shutters on our cameras that the photographs would reflect it.<br/><br/>The sun eventually made its presence known and for a time the frozen crystals resisted its warmth, with frost and sunshine coexisting to make a sparkling, glittering effect on the flowers and foliage. It sounds reductive to call the moment magical, but honestly that is exactly what it was.<br/><br/>We would love to show you these photographs, every single one of them. But they are not meant to be scrolled through in a fraction of a second, forgotten almost as soon as they were seen. If photography has the ability to pause time, we are aiming to pause it further, slow it down. This work will only be experienced offline and on paper. It won’t be seen by many, but it will be seen deeply.<br/><br/>We’ve spent the last 3 months turning these photographs into a publication.<br/><br/>Is it a book? No. A booklet? Not really… Should we call it an art zine? Maybe! But really it’s just a walk among frozen dahlias, with no outerwear required. If you believe in Bitcoin it doesn’t make sense to cash out for USD at some lofty valuation. Then you’re just stuck with a currency that is going in the wrong direction and have no Bitcoin to show for your efforts. I suspect the gains will be too good for many to ignore though. I do think that trimming some BTC to pay off debt or buy a house outright as you said are good ideas, and a Bitcoin-focused business is an excellent idea. Climate is longer term, patterns and averages over decades. Weather is *impacted* by a changing climate, with the warming of the oceans being one major factor. Ocean currents like the AMOC and the Gulf Stream are really important, and their disruption or collapse would cause big problems. With Meta now throwing their weight behind the movement, it’s game over for this narrative - at least for the foreseeable future.<br/><br/>There is no way Nostr as a brand can claim that space in people’s minds, especially against multiple established brands.<br/><br/>That ‘censorship resistance’ and ‘free speeech’ ships have sailed (even though they were fake), and the people who cared enough boarded.<br/><br/>The normies who never cared, still don’t care, or they found their way to the anti-platforms, like Threads, BlueSky or Pornhub.<br/><br/>The small minority of us still here on Nostr…are well…still here. We’re building, which is great - that MUST happen before anything else.<br/><br/>But if the goal is to grow the network effect here and bring in more people, then we need to find a new angle. Something more compelling that is a “running towards” value, not a “running away from” value.<br/><br/>I’m not 100% sure what that is. My instinct is that a “network of incredible applications”, that don’t necessarliy or explicitly brand themselves as Nostr, but have it under the hood is the right direction, but it needs more experimentation. Also needs more really well-build apps for non-sovereignty minded people (especially content creators) and people who don’t necessarly care about the reasons Nostr was first built.<br/><br/>We’ve been working away at this Satlantis thing for almost a year now and it’s coming along - albeit WAY slower than I would’ve liked. We’ve made a whole bunch of mistakes and at times I feel like a LARP considering the state of non-delivery.<br/><br/>BUT…we made some big changes in the last 2mths since missing a couple key deadlines, and I’m pretty confident we’ll have something cool to show in a month or two.<br/><br/>Let’s see if this approach starts to bring new interest andn activity here. Or if I’m full of shit.
