I would like to write postmarketOS documentation on how to port U-Boot to new boards, focusing on mobile devices and their quirks. But, because I do not have personal experience with porting U-Boot, I need help.

Thus, does anybody have experience with porting U-Boot to a new board and would be willing to answer some questions about the process? Bonus points if U-Boot was ported without the board having good mainline Linux support.

#PostMarketOS #UBoot #LinuxMobile #MobileLinux

The Gigaset GS290 (also sold as "Volla Phone") is back in postmarketOS! If you've been following, this is what I've been vague-posting kernel development about.

It can do practically nothing, but Plymouth does come up and show a cool loading screen and netboot *does* work. There is no touchscreen integration (the driver exists, I just have to figure out how the hell to integrate it in the devicetree when every other board that uses it is Qualcomm).

https://gitlab.postmarketos.org/postmarketOS/pmaports/-/merge_requests/9350

#PostMarketOS

I propose adding the "Rust Cycle" to the natural cycles of Earth.

This phenomenon has been seen on a "Fedi-verse" where users will heavily promote Rust (a programming language) as a solution to programming problems. This trend follows for a few weeks to months.

Then, after a minor failure in the Rust project itself or a Rust-based project, this "Fedi-verse" will go the complete opposite direction and blame all failures on using Rust before reverting to loving it.

It is a quite curious state.

I got excited seeing a project that fit the bill of what I needed, so I went about ensuring it isn't slop. Sadly, there was a CLAUDE.md file. But, the project had all the tells of not being slop, being Rust and Nix (alone they can indicate slop, but together I've noticed they usually don't), so I got curious and clicked on the markdown file.

The file just prompted the LLM to output like an anime girl and state not "knowing" programming.

Interesting solution, but I'm not complaining.

While postmarketOS does not use Android components, these firmware files are essential for the functionality of devices (this is the same as x86_64, but usually the firmware files are downloaded separately). It is possible to split these files out and use them from a postmarketOS package, but this was not done for the Volla Phone, so it requires Android 9 to be flashed before flashing pmOS.

I meant that now you don't have to download an entire ChromeOS rootfs and patch the binary to work with not-ChromeOS just to get a barely working widevine binary on aarch64. Now you can (most likely) just pull Google Chrome's deb package, extract the libwidevine, do more minor patches (mostly for pagesize) and use that with something like firefox.

I think the saddest part of the LLM infection of open-source software development is the loss of trust in each other. Beforehand, if somebody submitted some bad code, it could be assumed it was either a mistake or they weren't well-versed enough with the codebase. Nowadays, any code submitted by an unknown party brings immediate scrutiny and a "guilty until proven innocent" mentality. Its a valid defense mechanism, but I will never forgive the corpos for this.

Please, GitLab, I beg of you. Show the actual date something was pushed. I do not need "a week ago" or "three days ago". Timezones are weird and its impossible to tell what date that actually is. Just give me a regular date. I know you can do this, you do it on older commits. Please.

Developers have learned how to review code and debate changes effectively, but LLMs actively deskill people and cause them to rely solely on a paid tool. Another major issue is that the code that LLMs output are differently licensed depending on the legal jurisdiction, which can cause legal issues with licensing. Then there is the environmental issue of power and water and land used.

So apparently, the reason a computer "boots" instead of "initializes" is in reference to "bootstrap", which is the part of the boot used to fasten it to the foot.

So a computer pulls its bootstraps while turning on I guess.

So... do people actually notice a difference between 1080p and anything higher? I may be a bad person to comment on this, because I still consider 720p "high definition" and am perfectly fine watching something in 480p (I love slow internet!).

Sometimes I feel so inferior to the kernel devs that I meet working on postmarketOS. Its like, I'm over here trying to decide if lib or share makes more sense for a config file and they're over there adding camera support and porting entirely new devices. I know that both the distro and kernel sides are important, but the kernel side is a lot flashier and has more immediate reward (until you have to upstream your code, and then you are hit with the email thread of unfathomable despair).

If you implement all of this on your own, you've deviated from stock to the point that the system is nearly unmaintainable, and then you have that issue on your hands. It is not that pmOS could *not* become something very secure, but that currently it is not and people seem to think it is for some reason.

I don't know if I have to say this, but please do not use postmarketOS on a personal device if you are doing anything security critical or requiring high levels of data protection. Android or iOS are much better options for this. I would generally recommend a Google Pixel with GrapheneOS if you really need peace-of-mind. Heck, a random stock Android ROM from a carrier phone is probably more secure with some adb work.

#PostMarketOS #Android #iOS #CyberSecurity
