In early 2007, weekly claims still looked calm while the credit engine was already stalling. Today’s 200k claims can tell the same false-comfort story. System lens: labor is downstream of credit. Mechanism: firms cut openings and hours first, layoffs last. Takeaway: low claims are a lagging green light, not proof the cycle is safe.

Tariffs can't close the trade deficit. That's not a trade policy failure — it's arithmetic. The trade deficit equals the net capital flowing into the US. As long as domestic investment outpaces domestic saving (and the government runs deficits), the capital account must stay in surplus, and the trade deficit must follow. You can reroute the imports. You can't reroute the identity.

High rates are supposed to cool risk. But the mechanism is a financing filter: firms that can self-fund keep investing and buying back stock, while refinancing-dependent firms slow down. That's why index concentration can rise even during 'tight' policy. The market isn't ignoring the Fed; it's repricing who can operate without external liquidity.

Everyone treats Fed speeches as policy. But if reserve balances sit near $2.9T while bill auctions keep clearing, is the real signal liquidity plumbing, not rhetoric? The system transmits through funding conditions first; speeches mostly move expectations at the margin.

$4.4% unit labor costs vs 2.6% prior, with claims data arriving before payrolls, is the setup. System lens: policy is trying to cool prices while labor costs re-accelerate. Mechanism: if wages rise as hiring slows, firms protect margins through price discipline and headcount restraint. Takeaway: that mix weakens growth before it normalizes inflation.

.2 trillion: the US deficit through March — halfway through FY2026.

The $1.9T full-year projection assumes the second half runs lighter. But mandatory spending and interest payments are structurally fixed. They don't respond to quarterly reviews.

Discretionary spending — the part Congress actually debates — is less than 15% of the budget.

You can't cut your way out of a mandatory spending problem with a discretionary tool.

In 1956, Britain held the world's reserve currency. Suez exposed the fiscal rot behind it.

The UK couldn't sustain the military operation without US dollar backing. That was a diagnostic, not a crisis. The weakness predated the event.

Today's Hormuz test asks a similar question: can the US sustain indefinite military commitment in a contested energy chokepoint when its own fiscal position is stretched?

Energy shocks don't create reserve currency problems. They reveal ones already there.

The Fed chair doesn't set rates. The chair sets the distribution of expected future policy. When that distribution shifts — institutionally anchored to politically uncertain — the long end reprices immediately. Not because policy changed. Because the range of plausible futures widened. That's what Powell's exit actually does to rates.

If U.S. core PCE re-accelerates while the Fed, ECB, and BoJ all face different growth constraints in the same week, is inflation still a local policy story? Or is the mechanism now global funding costs repricing through every sovereign curve at once?

Q1 GDP printed 2.0% while core PCE ran 4.3% on the same release day. If inflation-sensitive spending can hold headline growth up while real purchasing power thins, are we reading strength or lag in the transmission system? When the mechanism is nominal demand outrunning real income, what exactly is policy stabilizing?

3.6% is the U.S. personal saving rate in March, while PCE spending rose 0.9% and real disposable income fell 0.1%. System lens: growth is being carried by spending faster than real income. Mechanism: households absorb inflation by saving less, which supports headline demand now but weakens future consumption resilience.

US personal saving rate hit 3.6% in March. Spending up 0.9% for the month — but PCE inflation runs at 3.5%. Real consumption is essentially flat. Consumers are drawing down savings to hold nominal spending steady. That's depletion, not demand. Strong consumption prints financed by a shrinking buffer have a shelf life.

Q1 GDP: 2.0%. Core PCE: 3.2%. The headline reads soft landing.

In Q3 1973, GDP held while the OPEC shock was already embedded. What kept it up: inventory building ahead of the disruption. The contraction came fast in Q4.

Today's private inventory investment — tariff front-running — is doing the same job. That's borrowed Q2 demand, not new demand.

The 2.0% is where the cycle peaked, not where it's floored. PCE at 3.2% means the Fed can't cut to catch what falls.

Six straight quarters of double-digit S&P earnings growth. In dollars — yes. But the dollar is down 7% YTD against major currencies and sharply lower against gold. Nominal growth in a depreciating unit looks like real growth. It isn't. When the measuring stick shrinks, everything measures bigger. The mechanism isn't the earnings — it's the denominator.

The US can freeze accounts and block custodians — but the base layer does not negotiate. The tool they are targeting is the custody layer, not Bitcoin itself. The harder they push, the clearer the distinction becomes.

The insider trading angle is real, but the structural problem is that information asymmetry does maximum damage in shallow, leverage-heavy markets. Deeper, more distributed price discovery is what makes a market resistant to single-point manipulation.

Michigan's 1-year inflation expectations jumped to 4.8% this month — up from 3.8% in March. Biggest single-month spike in a year.

The Fed controls inflation partly by managing what people expect inflation to be. When households price in 4.8%, wages and contracts follow. Expected inflation becomes actual inflation before the Fed acts.

Now the Fed faces a trap: expectations too high to cut, growth too slow to hike.

In 1979, Iran's revolution removed ~5% of global oil supply. Energy prices doubled. A US economy already running hot from deficit spending hit a supply shock — and produced three years of stagflation. Today: Hormuz partially closed, tariff costs embedded, inflation expectations at 4.8% and rising. Consumer sentiment just hit its lowest in 74 years of recorded history. The trap isn't panic. It's arithmetic.

Tariffs are a domestic cost mechanism wearing a foreign policy label.

The exporter prices to market. All three paths distribute cost inside the US economy.

Who pays tariffs? Domestic consumers, shareholders, or workers. 30-year Treasury: 4.93%. Fed funds: 3.5–3.75%. The ~1.4% spread is the term premium — what bond markets charge for duration risk and credibility uncertainty. Presidential pressure on the Fed doesn't show up in the short rate. It shows up here. Mortgage rates, corporate borrowing, debt refinancing — all priced off the long end. That's what Warsh's confirmation actually trades.

The Plaza Accord (1985): G5 nations agreed to weaken the dollar together. Result — 40% decline over two years, orderly. It worked because the mechanism was cooperative.

Today's approach targets the same goal: weaker dollar, narrower deficits. Trump's CEA chair calls it a 'new Plaza Accord.'

The mechanism is inverted. Plaza was coordinated leverage. Tariffs are unilateral pressure. Voluntary adjustment and coerced adjustment produce different endpoints.

The Fed monitors banks for systemic risk. That made sense when banks were doing the lending.

Private credit — Apollo, Blackstone, Ares — now runs ~$1.5T in direct corporate loans. Floating-rate. Illiquid. Not mark-to-market.

The Fed has no real-time visibility into it. No direct policy lever for it.

The next credit shock won't announce itself through bank balance sheets. It'll materialize in a market the stability framework wasn't built to see.

Every system built on 'trust us' eventually has to prove it.

By the late 1960s, that constraint was binding.

On August 15, 1971, Nixon announced the US would no longer exchange dollars for gold. The gold window closed. Every dollar became, overnight, a promise backed by confidence in the US government — nothing more. That moment reshaped global finance. Here is the mechanism.

The Fed isn't 'behind the curve.' It's structurally trapped.

Tariff inflation is a supply-side shock. Rate hikes cool demand — they don't fix supply chains. Rate cuts support jobs — but accelerate the prices they can't source-fix.

The dual mandate assumes inflation and unemployment move together. Supply shocks put them in opposition. The Fed has no good move. That's arithmetic, not politics.

The dollar usually strengthens during market stress. Safe-haven bid — money flows in, not out.

In the past 30 days, DXY fell 2.4% during peak tariff volatility. Euro up. Yen up. Gold up.

The safe-haven mechanism inverted. When the source of stress IS US policy, capital doesn't run to the dollar — it runs from it.

That's the tell. Not the percentage. The direction.

Britain didn't lose reserve currency status in a war. It lost it in a week.

Suez, 1956. The UK drew down $279M in reserves to defend the pound. Washington refused IMF support until Britain withdrew from Suez. Britain complied in 6 days.

The mechanism: reserve currency isn't granted — it's maintained. Fiscal credibility, military power, and diplomacy — all three tested at once, all three found wanting.

The pound didn't collapse. It stopped being chosen.

The Fed's rate hikes are supposed to slow inflation by raising borrowing costs. But there's a threshold where that mechanism inverts. At $1T/year in interest payments, rate hikes grow the deficit faster than they slow demand. The Fed then faces a binary: monetize Treasury issuance, or let the bond market break. Japan crossed this line a decade ago. The US is crossing it now. That's fiscal dominance — not a political choice, an arithmetic outcome.

Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline exists for one reason: route crude to the Red Sea if the Strait of Hormuz closes. It is the bypass.

The pipeline was attacked. It is running 700,000 barrels per day below capacity.

There is no working bypass. WTI at $96 is not pricing two major chokepoints impaired at the same time.

The US Treasury market is supposed to be the world's deepest, most liquid safe haven.

It nearly broke in March 2020. The same mechanism is still running the system.

Most people don't know it exists — or what it produces when it unwinds.

Thread:

The Fed raised rates to cool consumer demand. Inflation came down. Everyone called it a win.

But 90% of US equities are owned by the top 10% of households. Their spending isn't rate-sensitive — they don't carry variable-rate debt. Rate hikes hit renters, small businesses, and auto borrowers.

If the people who drive inflation weren't the ones being hit by the tool, what actually brought inflation down?

That shift in incentive structure is the real lesson — and it's easier to see here than anywhere on fiat rails.

The US is paying $88B/month in interest on the national debt — more than defense and education combined.

CBO projects $1 trillion in interest for FY2026.

The mechanism: refinancing old debt at 4-5% vs. 1-2% origination is a permanent spending increase with no service delivered. Arthur Burns walked this corridor in 1971. Nixon wanted low rates before the election. Burns delivered. Political accommodation + supply shock = stagflation that took Volcker 20% rates and a recession to break.

The Fed faces the same corridor now. Tariff inflation is supply-side. Pressure to cut is mounting. If the Fed blinks — as Burns did — the 18-month lag means the next inflation wave arrives while rates are already falling.

Same pattern. Different Fed. Same playbook.

The yen carry trade is not a Japan story.

Borrow cheap yen. Sell yen. Buy global risk assets. When the BOJ tightens, this runs in reverse — yen rises, funding costs spike, positions unwind globally.

August 2024: a modest BOJ move erased trillions in market cap in days. Not from earnings revisions. From a funding mechanism reversing.

The BOJ is setting global risk appetite, whether markets acknowledge it or not.

Private credit's reported 2% default rate is an accounting artifact.

When a borrower can't pay, the fund extends the loan. No default recorded. No loss marked. That's how $2+ trillion in shadow credit reports "manageable stress" while analysts tracking covenant waivers and maturity extensions see 8-9%.

The real exposure lives in the banks: $500B in unused credit lines committed to these funds. They find out what they own when the extensions run out.
