In thinking through what the #Guardian picture editor has done, I can only assume they wanted to give the impression that anyone can insulate their loft, you don’t have to be a pro…but in deliberately choosing an image of a person wearing no PPE at all they are putting their readers in danger.

My job involves spending a lot of time looking at images of lofts…I see asbestos debris/broken asbestos flues and water tanks along and rat/mice faeces daily.

I tend to agree. While I don’t want to see the continuation of business as usual on high end ICE SUVs, I also want a market recalibration on vehicle archetypes. 25 years ago there were far less SUVs on the road. Their dominance now has made our roads less safe for pedestrians and cyclists. The Renault 5 EV (in green!) is the current vehicle that has really caught my eye. The barrier to new parties entering the game is high in most state funded systems…but our current system with no limits for UK resident donations and is toothlessly enforced in terms of election spend by the Electoral Commission shows a system that is highly exploited by the rich. The average spend per annum on social housing homes is £3500 to £5000 in the UK - that includes responsive repairs, planned works (insulation, kitchens, bathrooms, new roofs etc) and servicing costs.

Royal tenant:

“We have no central heating and almost no double glazing. Our only heating is from coal fires. It’s very cold in the winter and very hot in the summer.”

No boiler to maintain or service. Probably little to no insulation. This is neglect and exploitation of loopholes.

My parents rented their home in similar feudal conditions from a Viscount. They bore the cost of all maintenance and were forced to pay to have the crappiest oil boiler going installed, that meant they were left for weeks and months with no heating or hot water on a semi-regular basis because the parts had to be shipped in from overseas.

Alternatively, instead of selling off the vast majority of the new homes they build, they could make them available to rent at a fair rental rate to their lifelong tenants.

I think this will be a win for #Burnham.

The scale of his majority will dictate what happens next.

A comprehensive win for him means he’s immediately looking at the wallpaper catalogues to do a Number 10 revamp.

In the 2024 mayoral election, #Burnham was elected for a third term with 63.4% of the vote. Burnham won in every ward but one.

BBC are currently saying turnout may be as high as 65%…that’s historic for a byelection compared to the general election turnout in Makerfield (55%).

This high turnout could still be in Reform’s favour though…are we seeing those occasional come out of the woodwork voters who came out for Brexit voters?

I genuinely hope that #Burnham is playing it safe just on the basis of the constituency that he’s trying to win…#Makerfield demographics are tilted towards Leave, white and boomers.

If he wins, challenges Starmer and wins again, he knows that he will have a huge amount of political capital that he will need to use quickly and wisely. It’s a mandate for doing the opposite of #Starmer ‘s slow, steady, pro #Israel, #LabourTogether approach.

That change cannot be delivered with current Cabinet.

As to whether #Burnham could deliver real radical progressive change, I know many here are less than convinced.

And it has felt like he’s suddenly taken the carrying a Ming vase approach to this by-election. Which might get him over the line and back to Parliament, but doing it in such a timid manner doesn’t give the traditional core #Labour much hope.

I maintain that the pace of change has to be seismic, because people are literally dying waiting for Starmer to get into first gear.

There is a selfish, gambler, that puts my own family above anyone else streak that I assume comes from being descended from pioneers, folks who got off their bums and decided to start a new life on the other side of the planet.
