As much as I agree with (and practice) the spend and replace ethos, I really must disagree with the logic here.
First up, bitcoin's USD exchange rate and the whole NGU mentality should be a matter of supreme indifference to anyone who understands and supports bitcoin. Secondly, even if you were to care about how much USD your bitcoin could buy, that exchange rate is driven far more by investment/store-of-value demand (accumulation, holding, and flows into vehicles that lock up supply) than by use as a medium of exchange.
All I'm saying is, spend and replace because bitcoin is the best, hardest and free-est money ever invented and because you want everyone in the world to understand this. Not because you want to buy more USD with it.

The UK High Court reaffirming the position (under UK law at least) that bitcoin is property. This was enshrined in UK statue by the Property (Digital Assets etc) Act 2025, but actually the principle was first established in New Zealand of all places in the Russell v Cryptopia case.
The full judgment with the analysis under the UK's Proceeds of Crime Act can be found here and makes for some interesting reading, if you're a lawyer. Much of it turns on conflicts of laws principles - *YAWN*...

Kratter's concern is not setting and forgetting, is it? I thought it was being able to ensure, in a world where government pressure is exerted on a centralised mining pool, that you can send/spend your bitcoin (i.e. that transactions signed by you are included in the chain). If you are trying to transact with a "huge sum of money", that government pressure already exists, particularly if you are buying expensive real world goods like property, cars (KYC etc.) L2 would be enough for basic human needs.
