Wow, my favorite #Portland #chef is opening a new place near me. He was one of the first pioneers in the city to serve authentic Mexican cuisine and just a few blocks from our house he opened Autentica. If I had to pick a last meal it would be his brunch juevos rancheros. When it closed we were such regulars that we got to come to their final night for friends and family.

sigh but it's these fake "concerns" that are being used politically and that is why I am angry. I am not angry at anyone in this thread, I am angry at the GOP as usual. And I would say that giving oxygen to these fake concerns plays right into the hands of those who would prevent people from using their right to vote.

well I don't want to keep arguing about this but it's easy - I am an evidence guy. I welcome any evidence that this is an actual thing that happens at all. I haven't seen any.

I would argue that "supervision" is the main concern that most people have about in-person voting - supervision by police, ICE, or the like while you're trying to run the gauntlet put in front of you that's designed to prevent you from voting in the first place.

2026-07-21 20:15:27 UTC

I'm not angry at you. I'm just angry that the GOP is trying to kill the most convenient and secure method for voting that exists over concerns that are 100% made up and I just can't let misinformation about it be unanswered.

my wife actually works in my county's election office and the state has been doing this a long, long time. Most of the concerns I hear about our system are total and complete bullshit, which is why I am a little fired up about it. But I assure you that there are a lot of procedures to ensure that all ballots are correctly tracked and counted and even allows one to vote in person should you choose.

the GOP leadership hates vote-by-mail because they can't ratfuck it. Oregon's GOP voters love it because they live out in fucking nowhere. I've been watching Republican ads in Washington where the GOP candidates are saying that they'll protect vote-by-mail because it's so popular on both sides.

2026-07-21 20:03:41 UTC

seems like a lot of trouble to require in person voting over a totally non-existent problem to me. There's no tradeoff here because there is no problem here.

but you seem to be arguing that coercion is a real problem that needs to be "solved", but it isn't. Don't give it any oxygen by playing along with the farce.

here's what you do in Oregon if your MAGA husband will beat you if you vote for a Democrat. You let him fill out your ballot and then you sign it and put it in the mail. Then, while he's not around, you go to the courthouse or voting office and ask that they invalidate the mail ballot and vote however you really want in a booth. He never knows. "Problem" solved.

it's not worth the cost, either the actual dollar cost to put these machines in every school gym nor the cost to those wanting to vote without standing in lines while ICE helpfully observes to ensure that no one is breaking the law by giving an old person water or a chair because they have been waiting in line for six hours.

2026-07-21 19:46:55 UTC

can you provide any evidence whatsoever that the risk of coercion is greater for vote-by-mail? I live in the state that invented this and I haven't read a single report about this supposed problem in the twenty plus years I have lived here. It just doesn't happen.

My employer is still looking for a tech - we're a nonprofit that teaches migrant kids around the state of #Oregon. If you have ever installed a stick of RAM or anyone like that, you're qualified. Feel free to boost and hit me up with any questions, and while I am not the hiring manager, I'll get you the answers you need.

@npub1e9x…msz2 hey, how much you think you'd need to raise to start an expansion PWHL team? #Portland is the US capitol for womens' sports and need a team.

I would be sad if they left and I root for the Timbers, a mortal foe. Vancouver is a lovely city and I wish I could live there. It's like a bigger Portland, but in Canada, where your politicians are more normal levels of bad and not hoo jeebus cookoo bananapants-level fascist oligarchs.

My employer, the Oregon Child Development Coalition, has two temporary, six month general IT tech positions open. These are hybrid roles with three days in the office in Wilsonville and two from home, supporting a largely Windows environment. #GetFediHired #nonprofit #HeadStart

in #Portland you just put a free sign on stuff and leave it on the curb and if it has any value it just goes where it needs to be.

so wait, they took his gun but didn't arrest him for menacing? Because waving your gun around at people is kind of illegal. The police continue their promotion of fascism. Now, if the pattern holds, he will go on to kill someone - maybe even them! They seem incapable of understanding this.

I don't suppose anyone is flying from #Miami to the Northwest (#Portland) in the next few weeks who would be willing to meet and escort a street #dog for us... Feel free to boost this unlikely request. That's the only place they can be sent at this time of year from #Aruba, apparently.

2025-12-01 23:21:01 UTC

Now having seen the simplicity of making friends with crows, I think we in the #PacificNorthwest should train our crows to come and get dog treats every time we blow our #ICE whistles, so that when something is going down the agents are unnerved by the sudden, ominous appearance of a murder of crows.
EDIT: There are roughly twenty thousand crows in #Portland.

Speaking of bikes, I'm now actually enjoying commuting around by #bike and my butt is pounding my Books saddle into something comfortable. Just in time for the rainy season.
My main concerns with rainy season are these: I sweat a lot and I think wearing rain gear would leave me as wet from sweat as I would be by the rain. And I rely on glasses to see and those get covered with raindrops. I both want to see and be seen in the rain and murk of #Portland winter.

There's not enough paint in the world to paint all the dicks it would take to make NE Going street (my neighborhood East/West bike boulevard) a smooth ride. Every type of pavement imaginable was used in different stretches of it and it's all thrashed. It would be one long giant dick only visible from the air.

#StephenColbert should now run for #Senate against the odious Lindsey Graham in #SouthCarolina. He's the perfect guy for the times. Actually intelligent with a keen knowledge of politics and history. Can communicate the same to a wide audience. Actually patriotic, actively supports the troops. Actually religious, but not obnoxious about it. If we're going to have circus politics now, can you imagine a more skilled ringmaster?
