Gold and Bitcoin Faith Trumps Utility
By Christopher Baker, FRICS – Nation State Advisor, JAN3
Oct 25, 2025, 4:44 PM EDT
The purists among gold advocates jump on every chance to question Bitcoin’s lack of "intrinsic value," claiming gold’s utility gives it superiority. Yet silver’s 562 million troy oz of industrial use, versus gold’s 9.6 million, exposes the flaw. Gold, trading around $4,126/oz, beats silver’s $48.82/oz ratio (85:1) because of faith, not use, nor intrinsic value. Bitcoin mirrors this dynamic.
For Strictly Monetary Use: Gold’s true monetary share is roughly 7%, with the remaining 90% tied to jewelry, investment, and central bank reserves. Bitcoin’s use is not just an asset, a store of value, a hedge against anything, NGU (number-go-up). It can serve any purpose its holder chooses, yet remains 100% money. As @Excellion states, “Bitcoin is energy money.” At a market capitalization of $2.23 trillion ($111,690 per BTC), the winner is clear: Bitcoin’s purity.
Liquidity and Reach: Gold’s tradable supply is roughly 1.8% versus Bitcoin’s fixed 21 million cap. Gold’s $163 billion liquidity tops Bitcoin’s $35 billion, but Bitcoin’s 200x returns and 100-150 million users outpace gold’s 200 million physical plus 50 million paper holders (days/weeks to liquidate paper, 1-7 days for jewelry at 20-50% discount). Winner: Bitcoin.
Faith and Security: Gold depends on trust, custody, and faces confiscation risk. Bitcoin relies on math—23,963 reachable nodes and 425–500 million holders—secured by immutability, security, and energy. Winner: Bitcoin.
User Access: Gold’s bulk limits third-world use; Bitcoin powers remittances in Nigeria, Vietnam, and El Salvador. Try sending your Malaysian aunt an ounce of gold to help her out of a financial tough spot, or even flying there with it—good times. Winner: Bitcoin.
Mining: Gold rapes the land and emits 81-116 million tons of CO₂; Bitcoin’s 150 terawatt-hours emit only 60-70 million tons of CO₂, which is largely renewable. Winner: Bitcoin.
Verdict on the Superior Money: It's bitcoin today, and it will be bitcoin for generations to come. Every physical asset has an economic life and usually a change in use over time. That cool blacksmith tool in your living room still has value, but now it's a piece of art, an artifact, something of interest.
Gold will retain value, but its value in use is not the same as its current market value as an asset or money. Both can decline over time. The gold bugs’ utility argument fails now and will fail again.
Bitcoin is many things to many people, but one thing is clear—and will become clearer over time: it is money, it is energy, it is technology, and it is superior to gold.
Winner: Bitcoin—by design.

I couldn’t get the video to open earlier. I’m watching now. I’ll touch base with you later. Interesting that I was just in Kazakhstan. I’m always thinking about surveillance even though I’m just a tourist in most places. The immigration officers give out SIM cards for your phone and welcome you when you arrive telling you it’s important to have the SIM card installed in case of emergency. I found that highly suspect but maybe I’m just paranoid. Back to the video. I know Stephan too by the way!

Everyone wants a mulligan, a reset, a reboot, to start over, a chance to do it better, and why not? We all deserve second chances, right?
So do Fiat Currencies. Over 750 fiat currencies have failed since 1500. Guess what? It's not getting better; it's getting worse. Over 600 failures have occurred in the past 124 years, about Five Currencies per Year.
This number comes from academic and economic research, including data compiled by Monetary Historian Mike Maloney, organizations like the DollarDaze project, Wikipedia’s list of historical currencies, and studies cited by economists like Steve Hanke.
Most failed currencies were in circulation for less than 50 years before becoming worthless due to:
Hyperinflation (Counterfeiting)
War (Counterfeiting)
Loss of confidence (Counterfeiting)
Government collapse (Counterfeiting)
Currency redenomination or union (e.g., Euro adoption) (Magic)
Notable Examples:
German Papiermark (1920s) – destroyed by hyperinflation.
Zimbabwe Dollar (2000s) – reissued multiple times; ultimately abandoned.
Venezuelan Bolívar – still technically active but has undergone several redenominations due to hyperinflation.
French Assignat (1790s) – failed during the French Revolution.
Soviet Ruble – dissolved with the USSR.
Conclusion:
Fiat currencies, being unbacked by commodities and dependent on government trust and monetary discipline, have a long history of collapse. Historically, the average lifespan of a fiat currency is about 27 years.
Era and Approximate Number of Failures:
1500–1799 30–50
1800–1899 100–150
1900–2024 600+

I want to have massive storage. lol. I’m very ignorant of OS and what’s out there. I looked at start9 at a conference. I really just don’t know how to jump in or where. I have never even hear of TrueNAS lol. I want to learn and educate myself as well. I’m winding down one of my businesses now and won’t replace the time expenditure with more work, instead with more learning and doing things that interest me. I’m about to reclaim about 15 to 29 hours a week of my life. I’m very excited. What is TrueNAS and why do you like it?

I have bitcoin nodes. I don’t have my own server right now but that is something I want to get set back up. I used to host my own server for business back in the early 2000s Running Microsoft but had an issue and shut that down when to cloud servers in 2011. I would like to run something on Linux or anything other than Microsoft. Thanks for talking to me!
