I did not lose a single sat except some extra mining fees but this still cost me dearly. 36 hours with barely any sleep, worried sick about people close to me that I had recommended a ColdCard to. Fortunately, none were affected but this has shaken me deeply.

We must also take responsibility.
I’m guilty of being prideful, by sneering at the people using other hardware and software.
I’m guilty of being complacent and recommending a way of custody that I didn’t use myself for my life savings just because everyone I trusted said it was secure and because it was accessible to normies who took bitcoin seriously.
I’m guilty of sloth, not following up with those that I orange pilled to make sure they kept learning and improving their security.
I’m guilty of greed, wanting to orange pill as many as I could so my own stack would become more valuable.
And, now I’m guilty of wrath, almost uncontrollable anger at those responsible. Pray for me, but first and more importantly, pray for those who got hurt by this terrible tragedy.

This is not just a technical issue with one brand of hardware. The assumptions I was operating under are broken. I was listening to a technical spaces last night with Rob Hamilton, Wicked, etc. and they made it sound like the RNG bug was obvious once you look at it. Therefore, a non-technical user thinking that Bitcoin software that is bitcoin only, produced by a reputable group with source that is viewable so long as he checks the binary’s signature is completely wrong. so it goes for keeping seeds offline. The only mitigation is multi vendor multisig with each seed generated without relying on the device entropy. Tell me how I can recommend that to friends and family with just a few million sats?

I’m in the non-engineer vibecoder camp working at a mid-sized company alongside a 12-person engineering team and I definitely agree. The main unlock of vibecoding is letting your non-dev team members work on the long tail of tooling and internal system features that never make it out of the backlog. There are an endless numbers of these little things that only one person cares about because it would save them an hour a month. The engineering team’s role in this is to build the architecture and guardrails to not let this turn into a mess.

That is most likely the case but I’m not enthused about getting into a bare knuckle brawl for just a temporary change. Removing the unused witness stuff from the soft fork scope is strategically useful as it removes a piece of FUD from our adversaries and puts Core in an awkward position vis a vis policy if and when scammers start using that for their spam.

@nprofile…stwk, to expand on my last comment: the need for it to be temporary seems solely tied to the desire to disable unused segwit versions. I think there is a good case for not doing that. Specifically, policy already filters these transactions. If, as @nprofile…hyal is anticipating, spammers start using unused segwit versions, a successful soft fork would force Core’s hand and make them adopt the traditional stance on filters, if only to protect upgrade hooks. What are your thoughts on this?

Right but that pertains only to undefined witness versions. If you limit the BIP to OP_IF, OP_RETURN and output sizes in current witness versions, there would be no risk of HF or ossification. I understand that cutting off the current avenues for spam would incentivize use of undefined witness versions. But these are restricted by policy in both Core and Knots. If scammers migrate to v2+ we can force Core to take a stronger stand on policy, since they do really want to protect the upgrade hooks currently afforded by it.

Unfortunately, the problem is even a harder nut (pun intended) to crack. You can’t just will into existence a whole economy of services run by the small number of bitcoiners there are. Existing services must want to receive bitcoin instead of fiat. That is the most difficult missing piece, not solutions which will naturally follow. Until then, proper Bitcoin powered solutions like Cashu, which is perfect for 402 payments, will remain niche.

I support the changes addressing contiguous data storage proposed in BIP-110. Specifically, disabling OP_IF in taproot, and limiting OP_RETURN and output sizes. I would support going further, by getting rid of OP_RETURN completely.
At the moment, I have two concerns that I hope you can address here or in one of your next videos:
1. Why make it temporary? It undermines the credibility of the changes and its expiration is “hard-forkish” in that the rules would be relaxed after expiration.
2. Why disable future witness versions? I think we have learned our lesson with SegWit and Taproot, and any proposed v2 will have to be evaluated for its potential for spam.

2026-02-16 14:08:59 UTC

- reply

SegWit was fine, except for the witness discount. It was an unnecessary and ultimately pointless concession to the big blockers. Plus it did not achieve its stated objective (rationalization really) of incentivizing input destruction over output creation. Instead, it created a supply for otherwise useless block space that has been taken over by inscriptions.
