#FOSDEM will happen on the weekend of 2027-01-30 and 2027-01-31!
We'll post a proper news item once all the automations work after our yearly archiving cutover.

Hey @npub1z3w…c039 et.al, it's roughly half a year until #FOSDEM.
As a reminder, I will disable the #NAT64-based #IPv4 fallback on the default network. The default network will be #IPv6-only
#Fosstodon is still IPV4-only, so that will be impacted.

2026-04-29 21:40:02 UTC

#maker pro tip: you can save 0.20€ by cutting open a glued-shut tube of #superglue. if you press the tube hard before doing so, you can observe a small fountain of superglue that glues your right hand into a blob. this will distract you from the fact that your 25€ #knipex box cutters are turning into a blob as well.
gotta spend money to save money!

ah! I saw the notification and not the thread initially. Reading it in the timeline makes it obvious. Well, sorry for the noise. Still, a good reminder that I might need to cushion plain-copy replies a bit on the public Internet.

that being said: thank you for taking the trouble of writing this reply.
I do agree with your point about the tone of the message. It was necessary to stay in that character for that specific message
But, as is the problem online, in text the cues get lost and people don't know each other so there's almost zero context beyond the written word
In hindsight, maybe it was futile and wrong to take this approach of trying to show @npub1wt6…v9rc how his post came across

2026-03-23 07:05:19 UTC

my intention was to copy the grammatical style and noticeable detachment from the point which was made in the post before.
That seems to have worked. Not on who I had hoped it would work, but it seems to have worked nonetheless.

2026-02-16 21:32:08 UTC

so for #FOSDEM 2027, I had another stupid idea everyone insisted was good: it will be v6-only on the main network. The dual stack will get a yearly name change to prevent auto-reconnect. We want people on v6-only and break stuff left and right. Every. Single. Year.
And if #GitHub is not on v6 by next year, trust me, they will put _something_ in place very quickly.

2026-02-16 21:29:33 UTC

I made the switch to NAT64-only on the default network of #FOSDEM 13(?) years ago. It broke So. Much. Stuff.
I knew the former maintainer of the network tooling from the Linux Kernel Summit, and ran into him by chance that year. #Ubuntu was completely broken on NAT64-only, it did not even bring up the network interfaces, and we sent people who came to the NOC to their booth.
I also sent that former maintainer over there.
They fixed things very quickly.

yesterday, we had our post mortem meeting. Blown up to seven hours straight, and we only got through everything by aggressively skipping and timeboxing -- after(!) moving half of it to the kick-off... Almost twenty people on site in Brussels with half a dozen more calling in.
There's a LOT of details and discussions to running a successful #FOSDEM
Afterwards, we had dinner together

As of 30 minutes ago, the published videos from #FOSDEM 2025 have more than TWO WEEKS OF TOTAL RUNTIME!
If you sat down on day 1 in the morning and started watching videos all day every day, no breaks and no sleep, you would still be watching by the time we're sitting down for the Post Mortem in Brussels next Saturday noon. And we still have 100+ videos left to finish.

#FOSDEM ask: If you have any #Cisco #SPA500 series #VoIP phones you don't need any more or might be cycling out of use over the year, please get in contact with us / me.
We have had fixed phones at a few key locations this past weekend and want to expand the use of static phones. So an upper bound of maybe 50-60 phones would be very useful to us accounting for all devrooms and for a few spares.

But it also meant that it took me ~1.5 hours to get from H to K because I met so. Many. People.
Several, I have not seen since before the pandemic and always missed them as I was stuck in the NOC.

I was asked privately for the "how", and figured a public reply makes sense
https://www.ripe.net/publications/docs/ripe-801 is the policy.
Fun fact: The extra time around an event used to be 7 days, and this was distilled pain as I had to chase #FOSDEM #BGP upstreams to update sessions, filters, etc and usually needed to escalate through to last level support
Before automation and the Cloud, a new #BGP announcement took days to weeks by default
So I got the #RIPE policy changed and extended to 1 month :)

If you want to see the route object I created for #FOSDEM earlier, see

I just announced our temporary #IPv4 PI space 151.216.128.0/17 for #FOSDEM. If you want, you can follow it starting to become visible over the next hours and days on any #BGP #lookingglass, e.g. https://lg.de-cix.net/ has quite a few globally so you can see it spread.
As of this writing, https://lg.de-cix.net/search?q=151.216.128.0%2F17 has it in Frankfurt and Marseille, and nowhere else. Usually for new BGP announcements from EU, they show up in LATAM last, with a delay of up to three days.

even with wet wax, those bent wire hooks can get rid of it and the don't shove stuff in. It's better if a second person does it, but you can also do it soon.
I used to use cotton swabs which I carefully spun. A random visit to the doc, they pick out plate after plate of squished and hardened wax.. and I stopped.
Wearing over ears instead of in ears is the biggest factor to avoid runny wax for me. And it's much better for the ear biome so win win

Home after another three weeks of living in an #RV and the most magical thing is -- yet again -- #tapwater.
Open the tap, it comes out, is fresh, and can be consumed at will. A slight motion, it comes out warm. Endlessly. And it just goes away again and you don't have to plan your day around getting rid of it. Grey #water, black water, it just disappears.
It's so fundamental, yet most people in first world countries just take it for granted.

2024-08-17 08:59:16 UTC

There's another round of Strong Feelings And Opinions going around on #AGPLv3 and the main takeaway seems to be, yet again, that smart contracts can not work, and that most engineers take legal texts too literally.
Source code can be understood and interpreted in a vacuum.
Legal texts can not.
"Reasonable" and "precedent" and "intent" are impossible to cleanly map into precise instructions. And this is why that profession doesn't even try and has procedures outside of literal interpretation.

#FOSDEM highlights. We tried something new, and it was a bit bumpy, but it was fun! I was volunteered to MC it, which meant I had three talks back to back. I like stress I guess.

#FOSDEM infrastructure review; good crowd and many questions as per usual. I had to leave early to the FOSDEM highlights, but Basti covered the rest.

#FOSDEM hack. We couldn't refill the hand towel dispensers in the toilets. So the #FreeCAD people designed a key for us, #Prusa people @npub1d4n…dptf #3dprinting it for us, and the cleaning staff could refill everyone's hand towels.

It's a bit of a #FOSDEM tradition by now.. in 2020, I put into an internal platform that I needed $something plus Gerry in a duck suit and he replied that if anything he'd only wear a moose suit.
Anyway, challenge me on those things at your own risk :)

Anyway, if you need urgent Pokemon help, come to #FOSDEM K Infodesk. All Pikachus are standing by.

Maybe I'll remember to keep all the #FOSDEM talks in in one thread? Let's see :)
#FOSDEM 2024 opening talk! We had 20-33% first timers!
As per usual, many, many people standing at the back and at the sides. (sorry for the blurry second photo, I hurried too much)

#FOSDEM infrastructure review talk, this time largely delegated to Basti Schubert (not on Mastodon). His first public talk!

#FOSDEM opening talk from the other side. It's really good to be back in person.
