Google never ceases to amaze me.
I searched for LibreOffice in Google and downloaded the suite using Google Chrome.
I then noticed a random video about LibreOffice Calc appearing on my YouTube homepage.
I didn't search for anything even remotely related to LibreOffice on YouTube.

LibreOffice is good enough, but unfortunately not 100℅ compatible. Especially for large, complex files.
Didn't try MS Office with PlayOnLinux. Tried it with Wine. Wasn't seamless.
Didn't tried with Softmaker or WPS office. Have to try them.

I used tens of distros with different desktops and even just window managers for over a decade. I only stopped using Linux a couple of years ago and came back to using Windows. My main reason was, sometimes you just want things to work. Main problem I had was with MS Office compatibility. I could run earlier versions of Office in Wine or GNOME Box. But they weren't as good. I could run the web version, but it's pretty basic, too. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the suggestions. I appreciate it.
I, in fact, used to do just that, what you you suggested. I didn't just switch back to full blown privacy invasive apps right from the cold turkey. The switching was gradual.
From using Tor browser for most of my browsing, I switched back to Firefox with no script and UMatrix add-ons and others that I don't remember now.
Then I switched to Firefox with UBlock Origin, privacy badger and HTTPS everywhere addons. After that I switched to just Firefox with only ublock origin.
After some time, I switched to brave browser. And nowadays I just mostly use Google Chrome for convenience's sake.
So yeah, I've tried different combinations, but at last convenience won. This is what I think the number one competitor of pro-privacy apps.
Privacy respecting apps are not always that convenient to use compared to the competitors. On the contrary, the tech giants make their apps the most convenient they could without respecting your privacy.
So privacy preserving apps should make make their services more convenient to use. This would help them gain more users than anything else.
As per your suggestions, I think I'll take it and switch back to using the privacy preserving apps most of the time and when that doesn't work, I'll just use what works. Thank you.
And one more thing, would you mind sharing which apps do you use or maybe recommend from privacy point of view?

One request though. As you can see in the screenshot, when I typed @cody, different suggestions popped up, including the non-relevant ones e.g. the first profile, for example. The username doesn't start with cody or doesn't have cody in its name, but it showed up as a suggestion anyway. It might need further scrutiny.
Another request is, the profile I follow should come up first in the suggestion list, followed by the most followed or popular profiles. In this particular example, I typed cody to tag you, and I follow you, but it showed a bunch of profiles that I don't follow first and after a couple of profiles showed yours.

I'm talking about 2016 and few years after that. At that time, the alternatives weren't that good. I spent countless hours reading about privacy stuffs: privacy risks of using the big tech products, proprietary and non-encrypted software.
Google at that time seemed the most anti-privacy company which knew more than anybody else about you. So I started using the alternatives: from Google search to DuckDuckGo, or sometimes StartPage, Gmail to Tutanota, or Inventati, switching to some Next Cloud based open source and encrypted cloud storage provider, etc. And the best of that was switching to a dumb phone, ditching the smartphone altogether. I even deleted my FB account later on and ditched Windows in favor of Linux. I played with tens of Linux distro at that time. But using Linux didn't stem from privacy standpoint, but rather for my curiosity of tinkering.
Now, I could do all these because I could afford to do that. The alternatives at that time weren't that good. I'm talking about the year 2016 and afterwards. But I was so pro-privacy that that way worked for me. I even tried my best to not use the proprietary and privacy-invasive products at my workplace.
But this could only go on for so long. I had to switch back at some point. It started with Gmail and then Android. If you're using Android, you're by default using lots of Google services, knowingly and unknowingly supplying data to Google. It already knew so much that I started to stop caring much about privacy.
I switched back to Gmail and others. In academia, especially when you're approaching the professors, Gmail is unfortunately the best choice because their email filters easily can send your email to the junk/spam box.
So the answer to your question in short is, using privacy respecting apps didn't seem to add much value especially while using Android, Google search and Gmail. The alternatives weren't great at that time and then I just stopped caring because the big tech already knew much about me.
I know something can be better than nothing. That's why I still prefer privacy. But I just can't go full commando like I did earlier. Maybe in the future I'll go again. Who knows?

Brave has its Leo AI, but that's like ChatGPT and would help you with webpage summary, questions and answers based on the page you're on, etc.
But Chrome's killer feature right now for me is this built-in Google Lens. Chrome is a privacy nightmare. But this is the only reason I can't leave Chrome. It helps me in text extraction from any webpages, PDF, photos, videos, etc.
Unfortunately, I didn't find a similar tool for other browsers. Maybe some extensions/addons exist. But I don't know any.

Nostr is a protocol, or a set of rules about how the apps built-on this rule should communicate. It's not an app by itself. But as a protocol, it lets other clients/apps build on it.
Apps (clients) can be developed based on this Nostr protocol. The beauty is, these clients can communicate between them. So, it's like the email. Email has protocols different protocol that makes it work. And different apps or clients, like Gmail, Yahoo Mail, etc. that can communicate among them.
Nostr is just like that. But unlike the email, Nostr protocol allows you to build any type of clients. So you can have alternative to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok here on Nostr. Primal, Damus, Amethyst, etc. are Nostr clients that are more geared towards microblogging, primarily. More like alternative to X (formerly, Twitter). We already have an alternative to Instagram and it's called Olas. We have alternative to Medium, or for long-form content, and for that you can use Habla, Yakihonne, etc. We have clients/apps for podcasts, music, etc. We have an alternative to Reddit, hacker news, etc. And it's just the start.
Good thing is, you can use your same identity to sign in to these apps. And your followers and other social graph will transfer between the apps. You can use all the apps/clients at the same time. You can't use the same profile across Facebook, Twitter and others. But here on Nostr, you can.
About relays: relays are what stores and serves your data. When you're reading something, e.g. others posts, photos, etc. using a client/app, it's fetching them from the relay set you're using. And the same goes for when you're writing something or publishing. Relays are just servers. But instead of one centralized servers, you have many here. And you have the freedom to choose the relays here. So, in case one relay bans you, or doesn't want to host your content, you can always use another one. Or multiple others.
So, these are everything, I guess, you need to know for now. Don't worry about terminology. Just explore #Nostr and interact with people. Be yourself. You can use your real name here, or stay anonymous. You can have more than one profile, but that's not needed here, as you can use the same profile for signing in to all the clients built on the #Nostr protocol. Use hashtags frequently. Search for people, hashtags, And enjoy Nostr.

2025-01-21 02:13:49 UTC

- reply

Take your time. Also, the same thing for searches. While searching for something, if the characters match, the relevant profile should pop up. Consider it, too. This would make life easy for the users.
Keep up the good work.

@npub1syj…f6wl Awesome! You've squashed the bug. Now the signed-in state persists across the browser sessions, or even after refreshing the browser tab. Thank you.
One more thing: you might want to implement a feature that would pop up profiles/accounts after typing @ as it does on other social media while tagging someone, and even on other #Nostr clients. By default, pressing @ could pop up the most frequently mentioned profiles, or it could do nothing. Upon pressing a single letter, it should pop up profiles matching that letter/character. Upon pressing the second, it should refine the matches and so on. Is this feature on your pipeline? This would increase the usability of #Jumble even more.
